Awesome color, but PRIME first even though it says you don't have to!

Awesome color, but PRIME first even though it says you don't have to!
I am a big fan of General Finishes, and use Java Gel for my fine art pieces as well as home improvement projects. This was my first time using the milk paint line, and I have mostly good feelings about it. First, the antique white color is nothing short of "yummy." It's a really lovely french vanilla ice cream shade of white, not too much yellow, just enough warmer than bright white to be comforting. My first use of the antique white was on a large china cabinet that was previously a strange walnut-over-oak finish from the 1960s. I took the can of paint at it's word and did not prime. I did lightly scuff up the surface by hand sanding. I should have primed. It took SIX coats of paint to cover the cabinet, plus an additional 3 coats of top coat (which I love). I thought I would NEVER get that cabinet painted. I used 2 quarts on one cabinet and had to return to the store and buy 2 more quarts for the table and chairs that match the cabinet. That said, now that it's finally done, it's gorgeous. I did have one chipping incident, but I hit the surface pretty hard on accident with one of the doors as I was trying to hang it. And, it takes 30+ days to fully cure, so I'm not panicking at this point.I was a lot smarter about the table and chairs... I refinished the table top in my favorite - the Java Gel - and then painted the legs and chairs with the antique white.... but this time I primed them all thoroughly with white rustoleum spray paint before painting. I only needed 2 coats of the antique white after priming instead of 6 (!!), though some of the surface did crack and require touch-up. I also used a paint sprayer to cover the chairs, and this paint sprays very nicely straight from the can. My furniture looks just gorgeous, and I had someone ask me when and where I got my new dining room set already, so it's been worth the headache. I plan to use snow white to refinish my kitchen cabinets this week. However, I will be thoroughly sanding and priming. Bottom line - no matter what the can says for any paint, sand and prime. You just can't get the best adhesion and result without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST PAINT EVER!
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2017
This paint is amazing! I'm an artist/painter with over 20 years of experience using multiple types of paint, and hands down General Finishes Milk Paint has become my go to paint for furniture and cabinetry! It has the ease of use properties of traditional milk paint(little to no surface prep, superior paint leveling, goes on easily), but with the smooth, hard finish of a more durable alkyd paint. The antique white is a beautiful creamy tone(appears slightly more yellow during application but dries to a perfect creamy white!). To achieve the right finish and color consistency, it does take take 3 light coats for me with foam roller/brush combo(on lighter surfaces, but 4 coats usually on darker surfaces), but the ease of applying it and quick dry time makes it so worth it! It has the most beautiful, barely there sheen when it dries to it's beautiful hard finish! Topped with General Finishes Top coat, it is a durable, hard wearing finish for cabinetry and other pieces that are frequently used. I recently also used it on a brass chandelier to give it a farmhouse finish(i did prime the metal first), as a wash over a tumbled marble backsplash and also on a painted brick floor update, all with the same amazing results! Try this paint...follow the directions for application, and you will fall in love as I have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020
Fast delivery, great quality, easy to apply. This paint is thick and goes a long way. I tested a small section on my hutch without prepping (sanding) and it looked great. I proceeded to repaint my China cabinet after sanding. Originally, I was going to leave the front brown, but decided against it. It looked unfinished, plus I had so much paint leftover, so might as well use it!
In my opinion, the paint looked more white rather than Antique white against my existing Antique white furniture so I had to try to darken a tad. I had some brown stain, applied that over my finished product and I definitely received the result I was looking for. I applied 3 coats of the Antique white Milk Paint, (didn't do the top or back) and I have a less than a quart left. I'm ready to paint the top and get another quart to repaint a few other pieces! I am very pleased with my purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable and easy to work with paint
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2016
I like it. I did not finish the entire kitchen because still weighting out if I should......Our cabinets are pretty bitten up. The are gaps between them, the doors are somewhat warped, etc.... But I tried it on one door from the cabinet that we discarded after our new fridge did not fit..... The process was really easy. I cleaned it, lightly sanded, and put 3 coats of milk paint . It was a nice off white color. Then I applied a glaze by the same brand, which was really fun to learn (from the GF video). After that 3 coats of GF poly acrylic in satin. To my opinion, it dried pretty hard and will be quite durable. After I let it cure, I tried to "destroy" the finish by scratching to see how will it resist everyday use. Pretty great results. I decided to write this review in hope to help somebody to make a decision.... I include the pictures "before and after".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great paint!
Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2022
Painted my kitchen 7 years ago with this paint. It started to chip and discolor after 7 years - which is normal after painting over oak. (yes I put a top coat over it) I just recently put a refresher coat of paint and top coat. Looks brand new! Easy to get on with foam brushes. Dries fast also!
