I really love these seeds. I used them to make tea, as this helps with fatty liver. I grab less than a teaspoon, put in a tea strainer in boiling water for at least 5 minutes, and drink. I usually add some dandelion drops in order to make the tea more potent.I prefer to consume cumin this way, as unfortunately I don't like the taste of the spice on food. But the tea version is pretty good.I love the fact that all the content of the package fit so well in one mason jar, so storage and taking out the seeds are super easy.
I make my own chili and salsa seasoning, so use plenty of cumin. The last little bag I got at the grocery store had to be years old, and didn't have the fresh flavor I love. I divided this big bag up into half pint jars and put all but the one I'm using into the freezer. Unless you use a lot of cumin, I'd suggest you do the same if you buy this. That actually goes for any herb and spice seed you buy in bulk, of course.
Although cumin and cumin seeds have become one of the most popular spices on our spice rack, I've discovered 3 disadvantages:
(1)Cumin is too high in iron. Although this might be an advantage for malnourished people living in a poor nation, the vast majority of Americans ingest way too much iron, especially heme iron from meats. Like copper, manganese, and aluminum, iron is a pro-oxidant which, if consumed in excess, will damage every cell in our bodies and increase our risk of developing heart disease, cancer, and a dozen other killer diseases. Fortunately, the human body has the ability to refuse absorbing too much iron but only if it comes from plant-source foods. The human body cannot refuse absorbing the heme iron from meats, which is deadly to our health. However, even the iron from plant-source foods will bind to beneficial phytochemicals such as phytate, thereby using up our precious supply of dietary phytate, which could be doing other beneficial things such as acting as an antioxidant, partly blocking the absorption of unwanted calories, or binding with toxic heavy metals and removing them from our bodies. Cumin contains about 3 to 4 times as much iron as most other medicinal seeds, which are also already considered to be moderately rich sources of iron.
(2)Cumin is disappointingly low in fiber. Fiber constitutes anywhere from 60% to 80% of the carbohydrates in most other medicinal seeds. However, fiber constitutes only 25% of the carbohydrates in cumin seeds. This explains why cumin seeds are so delicious after they are soaked in water for at least 30 minutes. Over 70% of the carbohydrates in cumin seeds are starches and almost 5% of the carbohydrates in cumin seeds are sugars.
(3)Cumin is disappointingly low in selenium. Like zinc and iodine, selenium is a beneficial antioxidant, especially if derived from plant-source foods as a phytochemical. However, cumin seeds contain only one-fourth to one-twentieth of the selenium contained in an equal weight of most other medicinal seeds.
However, because cumin is more delicious than most other medicinal seeds, it has risen in popularity to become one of our most popular spices. In India, cumin is called, "jeera" or "jira," which means, "that which helps digestion." Compare that to the Indian fruit, "bibhitaki," which means, "that which makes one fearless of disease." Compare that to the Indian fruit, "haritaki," which means, "that which destroys disease." Compare that to the Indian fruit, "amalaki," which means, "that which makes one pure, clean, and shining."
Cumin contains phytochemicals which inhibit the bad bacteria and lessen the severity of diarrhea. In a scientific study involving rodents (mice), cumin seeds prevented stomach cancer and cervical cancer when fed to the mice:
I go through a lot of cumin seeds, whether it's rubs for summer BQ's or soups/stews/chili in the winter. The seeds are nearly impossible to find at my local grocery store. Usually you are stuck purchasing inferior, probably stale,... already pre-ground cumin at an outrageous price.
Fresh ground spices make a world of difference in a finished dish,...especially if they are bloomed in oil or toasted! Always buy whole spices and grind if you have a choice! They also have a much longer shelf life than pre-ground.
Spicy World are very fresh and tasty Cumin Seeds! Actually I could use a bigger bag, as much as I go through. Will purchase again.
*More expensive than at Indian store but way too much of a hassle for me to drive to. *I store mine in the freezer to keep fresh,...especially in Summer when kitchen is warmer.
I bought these in the hopes that they would have more flavor and aroma than the cumin available locally in the stores. It worked out for me. These smell strongly of cumin without even roasting or grinding them. It might be dangerous, as I've taken to using excessive amounts of cumin in my meals to try and get some cumin flavor. I always thought living in a place where cumin is a primary spice that what I bought in the stores would be of good quality, but I was wrong.
The 7oz size seems to be a good one. I use a lot of cumin, so I should be able to plow through this pretty quickly without it going stale on me.
I'm only now dabbling in Indian cooking, and of course, one of the first discouragements we Americans suffer is the seemingly endless list of spices. Now, I buy only from this supplier.
The freshness of the ingredients is assured; the aromas rise out of the spice rack like the spectre of old friends, and the results are usually foolproof. Let me recommend also an online newsletter called, "Manula's Kitchen" too. South Idian Cuisine at its best!.
After all, with all those tempting aromas, you'll want to get right to the kitchen. I also recommend treating yourself to a traditional, metal, Indian spice rack: They come in round metal and look just like tiffin, but it has a compartment for each spice, so you can easily see what you want to re-order.
Don't make the mistake of thinking you can get these spices "in bulk" at your local Southeastern store! The difference in flavor and freshness makes Spicy World the one I look for consistently.
I use whole cumin seeds a lot so I thought this would be a good size bag to order. They smelled really weird and not like cumin. Ended up using this once and everyone said the dish tasted weird. I threw them out.
