The post-apocalyptic world is really trending these days. Here, there is some mystery about its cause - somehow linked to oil production but that could entail lots of things. Anyway, a lone man (Martin McCann, the titular character) lives in a cabin, tending to his garden and, above all, safeguarding them and him. Atavism is in play - the fruits of communication, innovation and thought are basically gone. He has lost millions of years of evolution and is forced, for the most part, to relearn what those who came before already knew. When a mother and daughter arrive on the scene looking for food, the Survivalist doesn't simply give some over. He searches them thoroughly and accepts sex from the daughter as pay. The duo manages to hang on and we see them crouching over the lackluster garden, trying to make a miracle out of nothing. The intrigues also develop (intrigue being notorious difficult for one person only) as the story wends it way. It can be a touch slow but it gains momentum and keeps your eyes fixed. Much credit goes to the excellent cast and shrewd directing. I've never seen atavism done so naturally before. It's certainly a depressing and explicit film that some will likely hate but its brutal honesty in showing a world no longer connected to reality is fierce and worth watching.

I think it's telling of our country, USA, that some reviewers have zero issues with the violence of the film, but rather, with some brief nudity and masturbation. No wonder why we have so many violent crimes and violent sex crimes per capita. On regular network TV, you can now see brain matter fly against a wall after someone has his head blown off, but you can't see the tissue and fatty deposit of a female's breast. We glorify violence over and over, and repress sexuality.

I thought the film was very well done. It's not an action film and there is half the dialogue of a traditional film; this is a slow burn with mother nature as the always commanding, and demanding, antagonist. It makes me wonder how I would survive in a post apocalyptic world, if I would survive at all. Being an expert in IT or in orbital mechanics would no longer matter. The skills we view as country or hillbilly, like catching/killing one's dinner, would become the essential, valued skills.

So yes, you are going to see all parts of the visible/external sexual reproductive system of both the male and the female. Close your eyes and pray for forgiveness. And when someone gets shot or sliced, open your eyes and relish in the violence!

Entertaining, interesting, realistic, reminds you to prepare, as they say best to be prepared, some educational component, dark, gritty, their Western European accents are actually very easy to understand, good acting, good story, a bit of it was vulgar, to me rated a bit above an R, some adult content, mostly a film geared toward men, but I think because of the two female characters, it can appeal to women as well. Drama, action, in depth into the characters, it was long enough in duration, but if it were 30-45 minutes longer, I would have even enjoyed it more, all who made this I could tell are very talented, experienced. A few segments were not as intelligent in respect to an intelligent audience, still, I enjoyed it, it was worth the rental, I kept my eyes, ears glued to the screen and hung on every word. What would you do if there were a severe change in climate, economy which meant no more grocery stores, how long would live, especially if you live in the city, how well would you live. Though the chances are remote, like in the film, what if, are you prepared to live, to fight, to survive, how thorough and comprehensive is your plan, how strong are you and your team? This film might make you question your own values, morals, beliefs, will and abilities; as least until a society can rebuild again. If it ever happened, we can rebuild again, but in the meantime, can you hold on?

Real look at life pot-civilization..... to a point

Reminded me of The Road quite a bit. I raw, real look at post civilized life and survival. One thing I would say is that I left wanting more. I felt like the characters were real but, it also felt like at times that they really were not trying. The male character had supposedly lived on this plot for 7 years? How did he not venture out and find more varied food sources and setup more of a perimeter. That part didn't make sense to me, why wasn't he fishing? Not using snare traps for animals either? His only defense items were a bush filled with can chimes and a single steel trap. I would think in 7 years he would have built some dead falls, whip traps, tiger traps and more. It just seemed impractical that he basically did the can chimes and gave up in all of seven years.

I dated an amazing woman a few years ago. Once I complained that I was completely wiped out while she could jump up and start doing housework.
V said that as the guy, I did my job as a donor. Also if the Terminator crashed through the door, I was supposed to delay him, while V got away. That's the guy's ultimate purpose in life....

What's that have to do with the movie?

The Survivor's character growth. He became a Man.

Believable characters, wonderful actors ( where do the UK/Ireland get these actors?), pretty solid plot.

Things to take from movie.
Cashe, cashe, cashe
Learn snares
Don't trust mother in laws

A thinking person's apocalypse movie. That explains the love it or hate it reviews.

Da ich im besonderen etwas ruhigere Endzeitfilme sehr mag wollte ich mich von der relativ schlechten Bewertung hier auf Amazon nicht abschrecken lassen und habe mir den Film gegönnt. Ich bin auch echt froh darüber denn ich wurde absolut nicht enttäuscht! Der Film ist genau mein Geschmack. Visuell einfach umwerfend und absolut beeindruckend. Allein einige Kamerafahrten und -Einstellungen sind erste Sahne! Die ganze Story kommt mit wenigen Worten aus und setzt vielmehr darauf ihre Botschaft in Bildern rüberzubringen. Ein besonderes Lob muß man den Schauspielern aussprechen, sie machen ihre Sache wirklich mehr als gut. Einige Szenen (die ich hier natürlich nicht verraten möchte) waren bestimmt nicht immer einfach zu spielen und haben sicherlich auch mal einiges an Überwindung abverlangt. Großartig!

Wenn jemand Endzeit-Action á la "Mad Max" mag ist er bei diesem Film sicher falsch, er ist viel ruhiger, langsamer und unspektakulärer. Leute die zB "The Road" mochten sollten hier aber einen Blick riskieren!

Mia Goth is excellently quirky as usual, Martin McCann is thoroughly believable as a post-apocalypse survivor.
If you watch the extras, watch Magpie before the movie, it's a prequel. The other short movies included can be watched after.

Distinctive? maybe. Thrilling? No, sorry, not really.
This was a long slow journey that started quiet well with the dark & gloomy atmosphere, but gradually descended into tedium.
A few characters, all suspicious of each other, trying to survive in a post apocalyptic wood, chuck in a few bandits & come up with an ending to tie it all together. Fail.
I'm just relieved I waited & spent less than a tenner on this one.
I don't understand the gushing reviews. I bought this as Mark Kermode seems to keep referring to it as some kind of masterpiece.
I just thought it was pants.
