I did a pretty good amount of research and watched some videos including ones that featured the Muvman sit-stand stool and thought it really looked like what I needed. So I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the sit-stand stool. I was excited to get it!
So 2 days later it arrived and I immediately thought it was really cool when I saw it and I loved how light it was. I set it up in front of my desk and adjusted it to my height and sat on it. It was a weird feeling sitting on it the first time especially because I didn't want to use it like a regular stool but wanted to really be able to benefit from it by keeping my pelvis upright so I had better posture etc. I played around with the height a little bit more and found the right height so that my pelvis was correct and my posture was good. The problem was that I needed to sit about 8-10 inches lower than the height of my desk when I was standing. That was the first issue...obviously not the issue of the stool but something to keep in mind when thinking of purchasing this stool. You really need to have an easily adjustable desk to use this properly.
Now for the actual issues with the stool itself. The first thing I noticed was that the back of my legs hurt where they were touching the stool because it doesn't have enough cushion on the edge. I moved around quite a bit thinking I was sitting in it wrong but to no avail. It definitely doesn't have enough cushion on the edge and digs into the back of my legs when sitting "properly" on it. That's the first strike against this stool.
Secondly, I'm not really impressed with the build quality of this stool considering the price. While using it I noticed quite a bit of flex outside of what would seem to be what I would consider to be normal for this stool, and yes that's taking into account the 4 degree tilt. I really question the longevity of this stool considering the way it rocks and creaks especially considering the noises coming from the cylinder. (as a point of reference I'm 180lbs)
I really wanted to love this stool, and I tried to, but in the end I sent it back because it just wasn't the right one for me. Perhaps I had one that wasn't up to par especially based on the other reviews but ultimately it was a let down for me.
There has been a lot of press about the advantages of motion during the work day. Some or all of it may be bunk, but I figured more activity can't hurt. As a result of this figuring, I decided to purchase an adjustable height desk and, since the Aeron doesn't really work out while one is standing, I needed a new chair.
I did some quick searching and came across a couple chair flavors. I ended up settling on the Muvman via Amazon. It arrived in two business days and was trivial to set up (you literally pull it out of the box and sit on it). It has two pads underneath the seat that allow the height to be adjusted. It's trivial to adjust up, although it takes a little more to push it back down.
The seat post is at a slight incline forward. When it is in its shortest height, I sit with my feet wide and usually with the balls of my feet touching the ground. I have noticed a self-implemented tendency to rock forward and backward that I didn't have in my Aeron. I have used it standing and it seems good, although I haven't received my standing desk yet, so I haven't spent a lot of time in standing position. It is springing both because of the fore/aft play of the post and the seat has some spring in it on the post itself. It really does get me moving more than the Aeron ever did.
Obviously, it's more functional than an Aeron for standing. It is mostly equivalent for sitting. i do find that my butt is more tired from sitting on the Muvman than the Aeron. It seems less comfortable than the Aeron - I could sit in the Aeron for 10 hours straight, so don't take this as a huge ding on the Muvman. I notice I like to get up about every 60 to 90 minutes from the Muvman to stretch my "gluts".
It's stylish I guess - you probably should decide for yourself. One of the best things is it's really light and has a handle. I spend most of the day on the Muvman and then switch back to the Aeron in the evenings. It's trivial to throw the muvman under an unused portion of my desk and roll in the Aeron.
I'll update my review after I've used it standing for a week or two.
Still testing but after one day I can honestly say 100% better than the cheaper competitor (wobble). At least with this chair you can actually sit sometimes. I do wish they would have put a tad more padding in the right places on the seat but it is functional as is and does encourage you to move around which is the point. Will report back in few weeks.
