I have been very pleased with the Shamans

I have been very pleased with the Shamans
I have been very pleased with the Shamans; however, the shoes have unfortunately started to rip on the side of the right shoe. I have been climbing for many years and I have never had a shoe wear in this area after several years of use let alone several months (5 months). This damage was not due to normal wear and tear; I usually can make my shoes last for over two years without even toe box damage as I am a very careful climber.I emailed to evolved. I have not received an respond. Summing up, I would not recommend this product.

This shoe has obsoleted every other downturned shoe on the market. That isn't to say it is perfect, but I think the love bump design is an innovation all downturned shoes should adopt in the future. As a runner I've avoided downturned shoes because of the damage they do to your feet when you cram your toes in (you don't break in the shoes as much as they break in your feet). This is the first downturned shoe which is meant to be worn ergonomically. Instead of jamming your toes in to fill up dead space, the "love bump" fills in the space letting your toe sit normally. This makes them less damaging to your feet and more comfortable than any other downturned shoe. After this there is no excuse for a downturned shoe that doesn't have the love bump.

The only downside is the heel is a bit excessively large, and the rubber is fairly thick. It won't be as sensitive as some aggressive shoes until worn in a bit.

The optimum size is a half size up from your street shoe size. If you get the same size as your street shoe, it will be too tight (and since you don't need to jam your toes into this, trying to be macho and size down will only worsen their performance).

Beware: These are difficult shoes to size! I ended up buying 6 different sizes because I wasn't able to get the size right until the 6th pair. I typically wear an 8.5 or 9 in women's street shoes. Since these are a men's shoe, I figured I would need smaller sizes. Ended up keeping the 9.5 and they are tight but not painful- just how you want them. Quality is good, but I haven't racked up enough hours climbing on them yet to see how they hold up. BF had the same shoes, they lasted a good while.

These shoes just aren't for me. I tried on the next generation of these in store, but opted for this model because of the price. That was a mistake. These shoes run very small. Even knowing this and trying on the newer gen in store, I still had to return them once for sizing. I absolutely recommend if you're going to buy these to make sure you try them on in person first.

Other than the sizing, the design just didn't work for me. I have flat feet, I don't know if that had any bearing on how they worked for me, but this shoe crushed my toes in the front whenever I put weight on it (not a sizing issue, just because of the divot) and the back end dug horribly into my achilles. I was never able to climb for more than a few minutes before my feet just hurt too much and I eventually needed to return the second pair as well.

I'm giving these three stars because despite the extreme unsuitability for my feet personally, the quality of the shoe is fine, and judging by the reviews, works just fine for other people. The padded top and velcro fastening is very comfortable and they feel snug. If your feet can handle these, the divot at the ball of the foot can help a lot with gripping on to holds while underneath an overhang.

My only recommendation is that you must try these specific shoes in store first before buying, don't rely on sizing's that seem "close enough". Again, I tried on this exact same model one generation up and the sizing was off by a couple full sizes.

These shoes are great, took about a week to two weeks or 3-4 very long climbing sessions to break them in as well as wearing them around the house for as long as possible. These shoes are very comfortable for a crammed shoe and once you get used to the downturned tow you can really climb hard on very small pieces. The rubber per evolv is good, but not great.

SIZING (very important) - I read countless websites and reviews to determine my size and orderd 3 sizes (11, 11.5, & 12). I have a pair of 12 evolv defy vtr's which originally fit great/comfy and stretched to be comfy but stretched too much for higher performance. As such I decided to size these down despite the fact they do run about a half size smaller in size comparison to the defy shoe. The 11's I could barely get my feet into and I knew right away this wasn't going to work, the 11.5 I could get my feet in, but my feet really hurt wearing them. Mostly my right foot which is slightly bigger. The pain was bearable sitting and standing still, but walking hurt most (these really are meant to be taken off between climbs, which is fine since the straps make it easy to easily remove). The 12 fit nice, they were tight and my toes were in the perfect position right out of the box. HOWEVER, after reading about the materials, these are synthetic uppers with a leather liner as such they will stretch slightly but not a lot as such you want to size these to the point were it hurts and if they stretched a 1/4 - 1/2 size they would be perfect so i went with the 11.5 and have been pushing through the painful break in period which appears to be paying off slowly. I don't know if mine have stretched very much yet, but once they loosened from use they definitely got more comfy as well as my feet adjusting.

Very happy overall!

Holy crap, these are super small! I wear a size 9 women's and I ordered the men's 7 1/2 and a 9 in women's, and I couldn't even get my foot in the shoe at all.....not even close. When held up to one another the women's are actually bigger then the men's, and it should be the opposite! I mean these are at least two sizes too small. The women's I am close to getting on, but the men's isn't even close. Maybe a 42, or men's 9 would be close? Shoes seem nice though.

The show is very aggressive with an extreme downturn meaning your toes would be 'knuckled up' to provide more power. The shoes are good for overhung situations. It features a 'love bump' which essentially fills the dead space that would normally form under your toes when they are knuckled up, which provides a bit more comfort.
I knocked a star off because the craftmanship was a bit subpar to other manufacturers such as five ten (glue stains out of the side of the rubber etc.) and because of sizing inconsistency between the evolv models. Eventhough a 13.5 evolv luchador SC fits me fine, the 13.5 evolv Shaman is painfully small even when there is no weight on the shoes.
