I love these cards and so does my 4 year old. There are so many animals that my son has never been exposed to before. He loves to sit down and learn about them. The cards tell you all about a particular animal. I like that they let the child hear what sound an animal makes. My so is very interested in whether the species is endangered or not. The cards also tell what continent the animal comes from, and gives all kinds of interesting facts. Very informational for any age.
My four-year-old son loves animals. I thought that this Tag toy might be his favorite (probably behind the T Rex book). I have been surprised to see that he is not really that drawn to it. If I get it out, he is happy to learn about the animals, but it is rarely his idea. (He likes Ben 10 and the Pirate books significantly better.)
The cards are heavy duty (thicker than card stock). They are bound together very securely. As a result, even my son cannot harm this toy!
Each animal has two sides of a card. One side has the animal making its noise. (This was the most interesting part for me, as I had never known the sounds of many of the animals. For example -- do you know what a panda bear sounds like??) The other card contains a few intersting tidbits about the animal. It also states whether it is a mammal, reptile, bird, etc., and whether or not it is endangered.
This product is not nearly as entertaining or educational as the Leapster game Animal Genius. (Animal Genius is one of the best Leapster cartridges.) These cards contain a lot less information, and they are not in a game format. That being said, it is a pleasant and educational Tag product.
This is probably the best thing in the Tag reader series for people under 6. My daughter just turned 3, and LOVES these things. She enjoys Tag books in general, but is not quite ready for the full-on solo Tag reading experience. She enjoys clicking on the pictures, and having some pages read to her.
This one is all sounds, short info tidbits, and high quality construction.
This is a fantastic way to learn! This was a great gift for my 6 year old girl who loves animals!!! Will definitely be buying more of the National Geographic cards..
The cards are slightly sturdier than cardstock with a finish that has kept them looking new even after one or two juice spills. My little girl loves animals, and these have a nice mix of cards with just an animal picture and others with more information. She is still getting used to the Tag reader, so she discovers something new on the card every time as she becomes more adept with it.
We gave these as a gift to her cousin shortly before he turned six, and he loves them too, so they appeal to wide age range and both genders, at least in our experience.
This is an amazing idea. It seemed strange at first that you had to twist the card to the top and that the second half information is on the card below it. However, You get used to it quickly. My daughter loves everything about these cards (we have both sets). It made traveling so much easier! I don't think we would have made a 10 hour car trip in one day without the use of these cards. Thanks LeapFrog! During that vacation, we went to the zoo and she was able to tell me details about most of the animals and the sounds they make. I learn something new from these every time she plays with this set.
I've invested a ton of money into this Tag stuff, and I LOVE it. Unfortunately my kid isn't feeling it yet. She may be a little young, she's three but she is already able to sound out small words. I swear this is a wonderful, durable, well-designed product and I just know she'll grow into it.
Specific to the birds/sea animals deck & the land animals deck, they are very sturdy, have great pictures, and tons of educational value.
