Cunt: A Declaration of Independence Expanded and Updated Second Edition Paperback – October 15, 2002

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 263 ratings

There is a newer edition of this item:

An ancient title of respect for women, the word “cunt” long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim “cunt” as a positive and powerful force in their lives. In this fully revised edition, she explores, with candidness and humor, such traditional feminist issues as birth control, sexuality, jealousy between women, and prostitution with a fresh attitude for a new generation of women. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin’ Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things cunt-related. This edition is fully revised with updated resources, a new foreword from sexual pioneer Betty Dodson, and a new afterword by the author. “Bright, sharp, empowering, long-lasting, useful, sexy....”—San Francisco Chronicle “... Cunt provides fertile ground for psychological growth.”—San Francisco Bay Guardian “Cunt does for feminism what smoothies did for high-fiber diets—it reinvents the oft-indigestible into something sweet and delicious.”—Bust Magazine

This is the most empowering book i've ever read. As a feminist, lesbian, and avid reader/student of women's studies, i have to say that this is the best book i've read all year. Inga Muscio talks about female anatomy, rape, abortion, orgasms, menstruation, and prostitution. While i didn't agree with EVERY point she made, i was shown an itelligent point of view that made me think of things i had never thought of before. She made me feel even PROUDER to be a woman. I have purchased copies of this book for my girlfriend and another female friend, and i intend on buying a copy for my mother. I wish i could give this books to everyone that has ever meant anything to me, male and female, to share her beautiful points of view. She embraces life, praises women, and entertains all at the same time. I recommend this book to everyone for an education and a new appreciation for women and for life. I recommend this book HIGHLY, and you'll want 3 copies (one for yourself, one for your best friend, and one for your mother/sister!) ENJOY!

I loved this book, simply because Inga reminded me why we need to stick together and love each other. I have expereinced so much viciousness from women in my life and I think it stinks! Her writing was so personal, I felt like she was right there reading to me. She just reached right into my heart and opened it up to some things I didn't think of before. She supported some of my current work with women - no matter how much they resist love them anyway. We need to be kinder to each other in such a world like this today. There were a few things that I didn't agree with or didn't like - but that is unique to Inga and I'm sure there are others that needed to hear that message. I've shared this book with several of my friends and continue to pass it around - everyone loves it!! By the time it gets back to me - I will be reading it again for sure :)

I'm a feminist in the sense that I want women and men to have equal rights, but I've never realized how insidious this culture is in propagating subtly misogynistic messages. This book is about giving women back our choices. We have a choice to use cost-effective and earth-friendly tampons and pads. We have a choice to use birth control that does not manipulate or damage our bodies. We have a choice to protect ourselves AND other women from rape. The author goes on about how oppressed Iranian women have far more love for one another than the average American woman, how in some countries genital mutilation is forced on girls, but in America we PAY to mutilate ourselves. There's more than just women's issues, however. She gives evidence on how corporations are lying to us, how the media is lying or shading the truth, the sheer idiocy of our president, etc. I didn't used to be a very politically aware person, but this book made me realize that we NEED to know what's going on in this world. So, ladies, do yourselves a favor and read this book, and guys, read this book so you don't become one of the silly men simply because everyone else is.

Wow! What an important book. I devoured it in 2 days and now my boyfriend is as well. This is a beautifully written, very necessary book important for everyone to read. You will be amazed at the belief systems and socially ingrained ideas and restraints that you animate without even knowing it. I thought I knew some s***, was in touch with myself and had a handle on the ways of the world. This book blew my wide open and changed how I think forever. The authors writing style is very conversational and she presents the information in a way that is very relatable and easy to understand. This isn't some hippie dippie man hating feminist rant. Give it a go. You won't be sorry.

If you are interested in supporting women businesses and other things like that, she gives a very detailed list and summary of lots of good businesses that are run solely by women. She also gives a ton of good information about various items meant for menstruation and other things. Some of her ideas come off as a little extreme at first, but I think she is a fun writer, and it gave me new things to think about and new ways to view the world. I don't subscribe to everything she says, but plan on making use of some of her resources. I found the book to be very fun and interesting and different from what I usually read.

Was required to order for a women's studies class and ended up falling in love with the book. I would gladly read this on my own time even if it wasnt a required book for class! Every feminist should give this book a go. Sure, the author is very, very different in her views than what you may be used to, but that's exactly why I cannot put this book down! I pick up the book before bed to read the assigned chapters for class and always end up reading at least like 20+ pages extra because this book is so dang interesting and ground breaking!!!

This book was an over all enjoyable read. There are some parts that get a bit conspiracy theory (I particularily wish that my fellow liberals and feminist would spare Christianity for a while, just because it has been used by men and WOMEN to do some harmful things doesn't mean its evil in itself or that all Christians are woman hating republicans). Maybe you won't switch from a nice little tampon to a blood towel or agree with her view on home abortions but it will make you think about your position in the world as a female. Alot of what she says really makes sense; or at least are worthy subjects to consider whether you agree with her or not. All in all, it is a beautiful book written sincerely.

I'm on page 39 and I'm so disgusted with the New-age tone of this book, the self-consciously hip writing and general ignorance about science.

I am an atheist. Unless you're talking about astronomy, I'm not into reading about the moon in terms of intuitive feminine knowledge. It just sounds stupid.

The book is full of vapid writing, made up words like "disintegratey".

This book is the worst book I've read in years. I will not finish it. I think instead I'll toss it in the garbage.

Empowering reading indeed. This will make you really think about the way female anatomy is labelled and perceived, and helped me realise the origins of many associated words. The author gives first hand, personal experiences of her struggles and joys of being female which made me empathise, laugh and sometimes cry. A key piece of feminist literature.

"Cunt" est un livre puissant, accessible... Une vraie prise de conscience ! C'est le genre de livre que vous relirez plusieurs fois dans votre vie.
Une ode aux femmes, un livre féministe (attention, vraiment féministe, pas sexiste anti-hommes) qui soulève des vraies questions et donne des pistes de réflexions, des débuts de réponses. Bref, même si mon commentaire n'est pas très clair, je vous le dis : achetez-le ! ;-)

I've loved the book since my close friend gave it to me many moons ago. I knew I'd want my daughter to own her own copy when she reached 18yrs young. I stopped all self medication (pain meds) as soon as I read this fantastic book, This book nurtured me to enjoy much bright awareness. I wish for my daughter to gain organic knowledge along her journey. :)
