1. DUCKWORTH.
Beautiful song. Amazing twist. The theme of his last name has lots of meaning. Can't spoil it for you thou-
2. DNA.
Catchy flow. The song is perfect for anything. Whenever one listens, it makes you feel something. It just has so much character and your head will be bouncing up and down. Such a nice mood. A bit overrated, though.
3. ELEMENT.
Terrific sample. Morphs well with the lyrical flow and hard beat. Holds the heart of West Coast Rap. I like the origin of the "Ain't nobody prayin' for me" used throughout the album. Very religious-gimmicky song. I adore that theme. The song has such a wide spectrum of enjoyment. Just an amazing package.
4. HUMBLE.
Very popular song. Very catchy, and could go hand in hand with DNA. After listening 10-20 times, you should be able to sing with Kendrick. It is great. Has a faster flow than the other songs, but Kendrick's voice is so diverse, that some lyrics you don't hear at first. It is a fun experience. I would buy this song for the same price of the album. Classic Kendrick song.
5. LUST.
Amazing beat. Amazing lyrics. Callback to "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst." The song is beautiful. Doesn't need any more explanation. Just listen to it and enjoy.
6. XXX. FT. U2
Excellent feature. I love the opening of the song, as well as the beginning lyrics. Then it jumps to a retro 80's gang beat. Then it transitions to older, than modern with samples of police sirens. Lyrics are all right, but Kendrick has good intentions throughout the song. Just beautiful transitions. This song has immense character, but if the lyrics focused on gun control and love more than politics and America, the song would be among the top 3.
7. LOYALTY. FT. RIHANNA
It's all Rihanna. She is the main focus of the song. The beat is just awesome. Has a recurring flow. Has lots of replay value, as you can focus on all the aspects of the song.
8. BLOOD.
Great opener, slowly ropes you into the album, with an exciting DNA. coming right after. But this song doesn't need another song for it to be good. The good sample of Fox News firing at Kendrick made me laugh. Song has little replay value but has a great story. Might have to skip it if you are extremely focused on the music. Just listen to it while doing something else. Still a good song though, the gunshot is the best.
9. YAH.
Boring. But great. Very chill and a great way to transition from DNA. to ELEMENT. The song is one to remember on DAMN. Lyrics are unstoppable.
10. PRIDE.
Is the "BLOOD." for HUMBLE. Is a bit slower than other songs, but is very catchy and has a satisfying hook. Vocals and Instrumentals work together immensely in this song. The song is missing something and has something out of place. This song is forgettable.
11. FEAR.
Good vibes. Bad opening. Sounds like Jackson 5. The sample is kinda trash but the theme is genius. Lyrics make sense but don't play out successfully. "Why GOD. why GOD. why do I have to suffer?" The song is all over the place but is somewhat lyrical. Song feels rushed.
12. GOD.
The theme is too derivative. The samples are useless but the flow is catchy. Not much to say about this one. Out of place in the album, should be in between FEEL. and LOYALTY. Kendrick sounds like XXXTentacion and Drake. Not himself.
13. FEEL.
Very boring song. Doesn't sound right. Is a decent transition song, but needs placement support from other songs. Continues the "Prayin' for me" phrase. Lyrics are terrific, but the beat shames the rest of the song.
14. LOVE. FT. ZACARI
Horrible song. Should have been: "Justin Bieber - Love Me (ft. Kidz Bop, Maroon 5, & Kendrick Lamar)" Very obnoxious song. Horrible feature. Disgusting theme. Can't stand this song. Zacari sounds like Justin Bieber but as a Kidz Bop song. Production is similar to Maroon 5, and the only hope of this song is Kendrick Lamar Duckworth. I feel bad for Kendrick. He has real talent, by himself or with chill music artists. Same goes for Zacari. They are opposite forces.
This is my opinion, I thought hard about these and DUCKWORTH is the best song while LOVE is the worst. Thank you for reading all of this. I like all the songs except for LOVE. The songs are well thought out but the album is just beautiful. Best Kendrick Lamar album, just barely passing Good kid, m.a.a.d city. Thanks! Have fun listening.
I based my rating off three criteria: press/packaging, sound quality, and content. First, the press was done superbly. The vinyl is heavy and had no signs of bend on the record. The grooves are distinct but smooth and had no visible scratches or blemishes. The packaging was also free of any defects. Both LPs fit easily into and out the casing while maintaining a grip on the vinyl to prevent it from falling out. The artwork on the cover is the same as the classic album cover seen on digital copies as well as CDs. Inside is a double graphic expanding both sides reading, “DAMN.” The song titles are neatly positioned around the graphic as well as production and writing information.
The sound quality is amazing. After listening through multiple times, there are no signs of static or popping noises. Each song transitions at an appropriate time with distinct markings on the vinyl, giving the listener the choice to choose a specific song to listen to from the set. Deep bass, heard in the digital version of the album, is mirrored on the vinyl with full sound and quality.
Finally, the content of the album is superb. Kendrick’s verses are poetic and methodical, with meaning to every line. DAMN. details Kendrick’s early life and origins, as well as the fear and stress of growing fame and wealth. Lamar often uses features and samples on his album to diversify the sound of the record and offer to perspectives on older songs. His most notable features on this album are U2 and Rihanna, with other appearances such as Zacari and Steve Lacy. The most notable voice samples include excerpts from Fox News and Rick James’ “Mary Jane.” Musical samples include an interesting take on the intro from “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars as well as James Brown’s “Get Up Offa That Thing.”
Whether you are a Kendrick Lamar fan, a vinyl fan, or a music fan in general, I highly recommend buying the vinyl edition of DAMN. Listening to the poetry and lyricism of Lamar will give you a new perspective on life in America.
