For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards Hardcover – August 18, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
For the Love is now a New York Times bestseller! Don't miss Jen's latest title, also a New York Times bestseller, Of Mess & Moxie.
Best-selling author Jen Hatmaker is convinced life can be lovely and fun and courageous and kind. She reveals with humor and style how Jesus’ embarrassing grace is the key to dealing with life's biggest challenge: people. The majority of our joys, struggles, thrills, and heartbreaks relate to people, beginning with ourselves and then the people we came from, married, birthed, live by, go to church with, don’t like, don’t understand, fear, compare ourselves to, and judge. Jen knows how the squeeze of this life can make us competitive and judgmental, how we can lose love for others and then for ourselves. She reveals how to:
- Break free of guilt and shame by dismantling the unattainable Pinterest life.
- Learn to engage our culture’s controversial issues with a grace-first approach.
- Be liberated to love and release the burden of always being right.
- Identify the tools you already have to develop real-life, all-in, know-my-junk-but-love-me-anyway friendships.
- Escape our impossible standards for parenting and marriage by accepting the standard of “mostly good.”
- Laugh your butt off.
In this raucous ride to freedom for modern women, Jen Hatmaker bares the refreshing wisdom, wry humor, no-nonsense faith, liberating insight, and fearless honesty that have made her beloved by women worldwide.

For the Love is a breath of fresh air to world-weary lungs and a balm to sad and splintered souls. In her quirky way, Jen Hatmaker will make you laugh and think and cry and wonder and question and pray and ponder and feel. She will be gentle with you, and she will show you what actual, true, redemptive, perfect love is all about. It's a message our very beings yearn to hear.
A combination of modern-day commentary on such ordinary-turned-hilarious topics as leggings-as-pants to the most important questions of our day -- how do we treat each other better? -- this book covers the concerns of today's women with grace and laughter. Women of Earth, you will love this book and you will walk away from reading it with a renewed sense of your own value, and you will know that you are loved.
For the Love is, by far, the best book Hatmaker has ever written. Simultaneously hysterical and touching, For the Love is the book that will make you laugh at the craziness of life and then cry out in sorrow at the duplicity of the world.
Unlike Hatmaker’s previous writings, For the Love is a series of essays about what it means to love, to laugh, to follow, to lead…to be human and vulnerable and challenged and hurting all at once. For the Love reminds the reader on every page that life is not one thing. Life is not exclusively full of joy, nor is it full of nothing but sorrow. Life is not always serious and not always funny. Life is not about winning or being right, it’s about being real and giving love. Life is about the mystery of tomorrow and the long-standing promise that God has not, will not, give up on you.
Full of easy to remember quotes, the lessons from For the Love quickly become part of your vocabulary. For months I’ve been talking about kicking things #offthebeam and soon all my friends will know what that means! But, don’t be fooled into thinking For the Love is all serious and no fun. One minute Jen is reminding us that our true purpose is to love well and the next she’s lamenting the recent trend of leggings being worn as pants and thanking coffee for being her soulmate.
For the Love is a book you won’t regret reading. It will challenge and inspire. You’ll cry tears of laughter and want to go into the world and change it. You will call your girlfriends and hold them close. You will become a champion of your tribe.
More than anything, you will be changed.
I recommend this book to young adults.
This book is so funny, honest, real and easy to read. I started out reading one or two chapters a week to keep at the pace my bible study was reading it. Once moving away though I changed to reading it once a day since I didn’t need to slow down for my group. I love her theology in this book on creating community, the Haitian mother etc.) I also loved her off topic chapters on fashion, her pet peeves, facebook posts, recipes, and thank you notes.
As women we can feel like the odd one left out. We can feel like no one understands us, they don’t think like us, that don’t pray like us and no one has struggles like we do. It is simply not true. This writer does a great job of making us feel normal. That we are not alone.
My favorite chapter was “If it isn’t also true for a poor single Christian mom in Haiti, it isn’t true. This chapter was a breath of fresh air reminding us not to get sucked into the belief of positive attitude.
“If a sermon promises health and wealth to the faithful, it isn’t true, because that theology makes God an absolute monster who only blesses rich westerners and despises Christians in Africa, India, China, South America, Russia, rural Appalachia, inner-city American, and everywhere else a sincere believer remains poor. If it isn’t also true for a poor single Christian mom in Haiti, it isn’t true.”
I encourage you to buy this book it is a great christian humor devotion. I am personally looking forward to reading more by Jen.
I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars.
