    4 Stars
Easy to use, as tall as our bathroom toilet, nice elongated seat. A little challenging to clean.
This review is for the Camco 41544 Premium Travel Toilet.Very happy with this toilet. Have used it lightly for 4 months as a backup due to only having one bathroom right now. Here's some pros & cons.Pros:- The size is close to our bathroom toilet.- Comfortable elongated seat.- The piston-type flushing works nice.- No strong odors when used with recommended treatment chemicals or pods.- The swivel dumping elbow helps prevent splashing.Cons:- The swivel dumping elbow makes it hard to remove waste in corner of tank.- It arrived in a plain cardboard box that made me wonder if it was used though toilet appeared new.- Camco really needs to provide more information, like more details on use and cleaning. They would prevent unhappy customers if they made sure customers were better informed on their products.- Some people say the seat cracked. It does seam a like it's not real durable but I've had no issues.- The design of the top portion could be better. When removing, it doesn't lay flat. The bottom of the toilet bowl sticks out.- When using the "pods" they leave a sawdust like residue that is hard to remove. I recently switched to the liquid treatment because of this. Though the pods smell better.Important things to know: (Some reviews have complained about things that could have been prevented if using the toilet correctly.)- It's easier to fill the top tank when it's on the base.- When using treatment chemicals or pods be sure to add enough water to cover the bottom of the tank.- Camco says make sure Sliding gate valve is OPEN when using. This is important for a few reasons: By design, it is impossible for it to leak when open. Seals eventually wear out, so if you have the valve closed when using, the fluid in the bowl could leak out. Also, opening the valve keeps the valve cleaner and lubrication lasts longer.- The toilet is made of ABS plastic. So when cleaning the surface, it's important to choose the right cleaners. Using mild dish soap on ABS plastic safe.- Camco and the makers of the chemicals for the waste tank state NOT to use anything other than water in the top tank for flushing. Adding anything other than water could interfere with the treatment chemicals in the bottom tank and could also damage seals in the flushing mechanism.- Leaving toilet in the sun will damage the plastic over time.- Never leave a full toilet in a hot trailer! Never! Even if it didn't explode, cleaning the toilet would be a nightmare. As some others have said, to make cleaning easier, I would recommend lining the inside of the toilet bowl with a garbage(plastic) bag when you need to go #2. Then you can just throw that away and only have fluids to dump when it's time to empty and clean the toilet. I thought the idea was gross at first but after using a bag for that, I agree.

this was my review on popupportal.com:

I'm heading out for 4 days next week and as a first time cassette toilet owner i wanted to test the unit before getting out there.
I finished testing Camco (41544) Portable Travel Toilet - i think i went Saturday morning to Wednesday morning.

tl;dr: Positive experience! Get one :)

DW would never be ok with me testing in the house, so i hid it in the shower of our downstairs bathroom. Everyone (dw, dd1, dd2) in the house uses the bathroom downstairs, but no one uses the shower, so the curtain stays closed - perfect hiding place and "testing site". I wanted to make sure it worked properly and that i could empty/clean out the cassette without issues. And since my pup isn't that big and i don't have an outside tent for the toilet, it would be in the pup, so I wanted to be sure it didn't smell.

I used the orange TST pods - directions are vague - they say drop pod in and put in enough water to cover the pod. So that's what i did.
I purposely didn't change a single bit of my regular routine - if i had to #1, i #1'ed, and if i had to #2, i #2'ed. I didn't try to conserve water with fewer pumps of the flush or try to use less (or special) toilet paper.
    The cassette did great.

Sitting was a bit tight - I'm not tiny (6", 230#) and I'd prefer the seat to be longer/more oval, but it wasn't bad at all. The height is 16 inches off the floor - not regular toilet height but close enough and very comfortable. The overall size is compact - i had plenty of space to do my business in the shower :p

Operating it was a breeze - everything worked exactly as advertised. I recommend laying a little tissue down first to make cleaning up easier. Open the hatch, take care of business, pump flush till it all goes down. if there are remnants you simply wipe with tp or lay the tissue down before. Don't worry about conserving water - flush flush. Shut the hatch, close the seat and seat cover. piece of cake.

I'm a decent size fellow with a good appetite - lets just say I'm an ideal test subject. my cassette has a 5.3 gallon waste tank and i probably filled it half way in 4 days, maybe a little more. Keep in mind i didn't hold back on trips to toilet, TP, or flushing water. with a tank that size i think I'll be emptying it roughly at half full - i think it would get pretty heavy if it was totally full. the weight itself wouldn't bother me carrying it, but it would be awkward to empty at that weight. it's nice to have the extra capacity and that adds to the seat height too.

Odors? none while not in use. no one in my family noticed a smell, even tho the cassette was just on the other side of the shower curtain when they were using the house loo. When i opened the hatch for business there was some ordor, but it was very muted. if someone was overly sensitive i think there are some additional pods you can get that help with scent - but over all i was so pleased at how little it smelled. the hatch works great keeping in smells, and after you flush and then close it, a little residue water pools on the hatch, which i imagine adds to the seal.

Emptying - today i decided to end the test - it matched what i will be doing next week camping. i had watched videos (there are some english ones about boating thetfords that are spot on and very funny :) ) so i was prepared. i had a water container to put fresh water back in the tank to rinse it. overall it was smooth sailing. it smelled some, but again, very muted, not bad at all. having changed diapers for two girls for years i had zero issue with it. The material was also very broken down, hard to spot tissue bits, etc... very liquid. it all flowed out just fine. extend emptying tube, remove cap, flush the toilet, and dump while toilet flushes. the only thing i didn't do perfectly was keeping the tube end down as close to the toilet bowl water as possible and depressing the vent button immediately. there was some splashing (ew) but it was just a few drops and i won't make that mistake again ;-)
Once the first main dump was done, i filled the tank with clean water, replaced the cap, and shook up the tank and re-emptied. i did that about 4 times - till the water ran clear. Wipe everything down with some tissue, and that was it - good to go.

no one likes to deal with this stuff, but having the cassette is awesome. so far my best popup buy.

This portable toilet is the closest to the real thing you can find on the market. It resembles the home toilet in terms of shape, size, and height. We had used it with bags for solid waste, to avoid cleaning, and it works well. The flush is also good in that it rinses along the sides and down to clean the whole interior thoroughly. The large capacity of the holding tank is nice. The pump for the flush is easy to use. It flushes when you pull up gently and quite a bit of water flows through in each pump action. The build is also solid. The seat feels like the real toilet seat with virtually no give that I thought it would with the thinner plastic. The handle to open the valve is on the side, unlike some other units that have it in the front, which is a nice touch. It does not get in the way of serious business. No complaint and would recommend it. I bought it at discount. At $80+ it’s a steal. --- Please let me know if this is helpful to you.

We finally had to replace a camp toilet about this size that we bought at Sears over 20 years ago. After doing a lot of research and reading reviews we settled on this one. We have not used it just yet in a camping situation but it's going with us this week for 4 days. I have filled it with water and put it through many flushes just to test for leaks and so far so good. The only issue I have that I don't have time to deal with because we need to use it this week is the spring in the release latch. It pops off EVERY single time you pull out the latch to remove the top. I was so afraid of losing it and I actually tied a piece of dental floss to it and the other end to the latch itself. I will be calling the company when we get back from the trip but I am not expecting to be able to exchange it, the best I am hoping for is just a parts exchange of the latch and spring. If not, then I guess I am stuck with it. My old one had a latch that slid sideways and it did not have a spring or anything, and this one seems to hold tightly even without the spring.. but I am not 100% happy about it not staying together like it's "supposed to". I am just sort of stuck at this point because we need the toilet in our camper.

Update: We got back yesterday from our 4 day trip, using this in our popup camper. I have decided to add a star back to my original review of only 3. While we did stay at a campground that had bathroom facilities, we still use this, mostly if anyone wakes up at night. (no one wants to come across wildlife in the middle of the night while walking to the toilet!) It worked very well, but does splash the water around quite a bit onto the inside of the lid, which then can end up on the toilet seat. Just take a couple seconds to wipe it down before you close it after use and you're good to go. It was easy to dump into the dump hole right there at our campsite. I also emptied the water left over in the top before we stashed it away in the camper. There is a pressure relief hole in the top and water can and will splash out of it, just a tiny bit, but I didn't want it getting on things we leave inside the camper, so it is no big deal to empty it. I did not have a problem with the spring popping off when I emptied and replaced the top section. It's very easy to put it all back together.

This portable toilet is everything you could want for camping or just to have in case. I bought a pop-up privacy tent to use with it and it's made time spent outdoors MUCH better. No more worrying about being gone too far from home or too long with nowhere to 'go'. It's comfortable enough, the holding tank is large and the 'flushing' feature is well-thought out. The whole thing is well-thought out and well-laid out. Can't recommend it highly enough! If I could go back in time and tell my younger self to do something, it would be to buy this. I never want to be without it.

Recent bathroom refit in my bungalow, (only one toilet) required a long period of no water and no toilet. This was purchased as a backup, "just in case" but became my only toilet facility so this was a lifesaver to use the addative with the camping toilet water. Never used one before but instructions helped. Terific idea, that turned out to be essential. Fluid coloured the flush water and smelt great. All the seals worked well and was easy to empty as instructions were included. I did find it a little low but I am a pentioner so a younger family should find it easier.

bought this for my garage and it has literally saved my a--. Seat is limited in size so you have to be well centred. Not good if you are in a hurry; the ad said it was the new expanded size, so the previous version must have been useless. would buy another one if the seat was bigger. Very glad I bought the 5 gallon version as you will need to dump it when it is only half full. Messy job to dump, notwithstanding the good design. I do not want to lift 5 gals in this operation, so happy to do it only half full. if your garage is not heated, remove the pump sleeve in the winter if it goes below freezing so the unit does not crack. the unit does not look solid enough to be dropped from any height at all, full or empty. good to have a wooden platform to raise it 1- 2 inches off the floor. Recently added wooden toilet seat with larger opening; fold back plastic seat, stripped hardwood seat of hardware and plastic feet; drilled 3 new holes for round plastic feet placed just inside perimeter of toilet rim, one on each side in front about 3-4 inches back from the front and a single back at the rear but offset from the spray nozzle, such that the seat does not wander and the load is evenly distributed around the rim; will eventually add pic. wood is warmer at any time of year and hole is normal size; easily lifted off when not in use and easily cleaned if needed.
