I've had Splatoon 2 for about a year and still find the game to be as fun as when I first got it. A big reason is probably due to the constant influx of FREE content that regularly gets added to the multiplayer mode, which not only keeps the game fresh and dynamic, but also keeps the playerbase populated at all hours of the day.
----------
So let's list some pros of this game... 'cause people like lists:
▲ The amount of multiplayer content is ridiculous: 24 multiplayer maps, 110+ weapons, 11 subweapons, 13 ultimates. With more maps/weapons still being added constantly.
▲ Great multiplayer progression system: a player can equip 3 pieces of clothes, each of which have 4 ability slots that are randomly generated as you level up in exp.
▲ Regular mode is where you'll find most players. Two teams face off to see who can paint the most surface area on a given map with their own team color. Simple to understand but insanely fun.
▲ Ranked mode has 4 different modes (e.g. escort payload, KOTH, etc). Players have a separate ELO rank for each mode!
▲ There's an online coop mode too! And it's really well fleshed out. You and 3 other players work together to harvest eggs from evil fish which come at you in waves, horde-style. You'll find a lot of people sinking a ton of time into this mode too.
▲ Matches in multiplayer modes last no more than 3 minutes. This makes it easy to hop in and hop out. Matches are long enough to be jampacked with plenty of mayhem, but short enough to never feel like you're stuck in a losing match (or with bad teammates) for too long.
▲ Gyroscope aiming makes playing this shooter so much more fluid than traditional dual-stick console controls. Possibly even on par with mouse+keyboard aiming with enough practice!
▲ Colorful and vibrant game with a very fun atmosphere.
▲ Sound design is top notch, including the neat synthesizer they let you play with during the matchmaking loadscreen.
▲ Single player campaign is crafted really well, taking about 6-8 hrs to complete, introducing players to different game mechanics in a panoply of environments.
Time for the cons:
▼ Bad teammates can be... well, bad... as in any other online multiplayer game. It's a good thing matches only last a few minutes each. There is also a big enough playerbase where you won't likely encounter a bad teammate repeatedly across consecutive matches. The other upside is that since each team has only 4 players, if you're skillful enough, it's easier for you to "carry" a team to victory (as opposed to a 6-player team like Overwatch). I do wish the devs would implement a banlist for teammates who you want to avoid playing with.
▼ No in-game voicechat! You have to download Nintendo's app on your smartphone for this function. But who actually does this? For a teamgame where communication is pretty important, a lack of in-game voicechat to make callouts is quite a bummer. The upside is that without voicechat, the risk of players screaming at each other is a lot less (AKA toxicity), which I guess is one of the main reasons why Nintendo made this decision.
▼ Upon booting up the game, you'll need to sit through an animated ~45 second intro of the day's current "news" (e.g. gamewide global events, info on new patches, and maps-on-rotation). Wish we could have the option to skip this, but my best guess is that it's a clever way for the devs to load game assets in the background.
▼ No local coop (splitscreen) of any kind. What???
----------
Overall, the devs really knocked it out of the park with Splatoon 2. I would highly recommend everyone who owns the Switch to get this game, no matter what gender or age group, EVEN if you usually hate playing FPS/shooters!
And after you've played this game, you will be left with one existential question: are you a squid or a kid?
There are quite a few "game modes". They're all fun, but the most compelling do require a Nintendo on-line subscription. Once you have that you can start with the basic "Turf War" which I think is most iconic: You play an "inkling" character who plays a sort of "paint ball" game in various arenas. You'll be part of a team of four, playing against another team of four for three minutes. However, the objective is not just to take down your opponents by "splatting" them with ink, but also to have as much of the arena painted with your team's ink. You start off with a pretty good gun and the ability to throw "ink bombs", but as you play (win or lose) you gain "coins" that allow you to buy alternative "ink weapons". There are _many_ of these, and it's fun to try out several. You also get to buy increasingly more expensive "gear" (shirts, shoes, hats, and the like) that improve your weapons or your resistance to ink. It's all great fun, and the ink-based gameplay is a refreshing alternative to the more serious violence in other games.
Turf War is just the beginning. There is a single-player mode that is fun too: You go on some kind of secret missions collecting various items and trying out ink weapons against somewhat-slow villains. It's a great way to practice various game mechanics, and occasionally you'll find "tickets" that can be useful for the competitive multiplayer modes (like Turf War). Some levels are "bosses" that are a bit harder to beat. If you have the cartridge version of the game you can play this without an internet connection (the digital version needs an internet connection to authorize the game, unfortunately).
There is also a multiplayer (on-line, again) cooperative mode called Salmon Run that gets quite challenging quite quickly. It's also lots of fun, and gets you rewards also.
After playing Turf War for a few hours, you'll reach a level where you can play "Rank Battles". These are similar to Turf War, but the objective is different (there are several modes) and they require a bit more skill.
If you have one or more friends you can also set up an arena to battle in among yourselves, or you create a team to join League Play (I haven't done the latter yet).
Finally, occasionally Nintendo organizes a "Splat Fest": All Splatoon 2 players can chose one of two teams and for 48 hours you play battles (Turf War) gaining points for your team. At the end of the 48 hours, a winning team is designated and every participant gets awards usable in the game later (but more awards go to the winners, and to those who played more matches). I just played my first Splat Fest for Halloween 2020 and it was quite exhilarating (I was on "Team Trick"; unfortunately, "Team Treat" won, but I still learned a lot).
Anyway, as I say, this is my favorite game and by itself makes the Switch worth it for me. You do need a network connection and a Nintendo on-line account to make it worthwhile. (I've played by using my phone as a hot spot with a fairly weak signal and that was still plenty good enough to play with no hiccups. You do need a good Wifi signal though — to your router or phone — because the Switch's Wifi is not superb.)
