In Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating, a family doctor specializing in childhood feeding joins forces with a speech pathologist to help you support your child’s nutrition, healthy growth, and end meal-time anxiety (for your child and you) once and for all.

Are you parenting a child with ‘extreme’ picky eating? Do you worry your child isn’t getting the nutrition he or she needs? Are you tired of fighting over food, suspect that what you’ve tried may be making things worse, but don’t know how to help?  Having a child with ‘extreme’ picky eating is frustrating and sometimes scary. Children with feeding disorders, food aversions, or selective eating often experience anxiety around food, and the power struggles can negatively impact your relationship with your child. Children with extreme picky eating can also miss out on parties or camp because they can’t find “safe” foods. But you don’t have to choose between fighting over every bite and only serving a handful of safe foods for years on end.

Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating offers hope, even if your child has “failed” feeding therapies before. After gaining a foundation of understanding of your child’s challenges and the dynamics at play, you’ll be ready for the 5 steps (built around the clinically proven STEPS+ approach―Supportive Treatment of Eating in PartnershipS) that transform feeding and meals so your child can learn to enjoy a variety of foods in the right amounts for healthy growth. You’ll discover specific strategies for dealing with anxiety, low appetite, sensory challenges, autism spectrum-related feeding issues, oral motor delay, and medically-based feeding problems. Tips and exercises reinforce what you’ve learned, and dozens of “scripts” help you respond to your child in the heat of the moment, as well as to others in your child’s life (grandparents or your child’s teacher) as you help them support your family on this journey. This book will prove an invaluable guide to restore peace to your dinner table and help you raise a healthy eater.

Review

“What I appreciate most about Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating is its respectful approach for both parents and children. It offers parents hope, understanding, and practical strategies that really work. Based on sound research and a true understanding of children, it gently but confidently guides families through the steps of building a healthy relationship with food.”
Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, EdD, licensed teacher, parent educator, and author of Raising Your Spirited Child

“Finally, an antidote to the infuriating trend of books about tricking children into eating. Rowell and McGlothlin expertly illuminate the complex emotional world of children with extreme picky eating and the caregivers who struggle to feed them.
Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating is a masterpiece of practical strategies, compassion, and reassurance that’s perfect for parents, pediatricians, and anyone who remembers hating ‘just one more bite.’”
Jessica Setnick, MS, RD, CEDRD, pediatric eating disorder specialist, cofounder of the International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians, and author of The Eating Disorders Clinical Pocket Guide

“With the persistent challenge of classification and treatment of feeding problems, eating disorder professionals are increasingly charged with treating children with feeding difficulties, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) cases, and selective eating. This book is an invaluable resource for eating disorder (ED) professionals in need of a thorough introduction to the spectrum of selective eating issues that may be outside their primary area of expertise, from typical ‘picky’ eating to more pervasive food aversions. The authors’ expert handling of this topic will empower both professionals and parents to better understand and support their selective eaters.”
Katherine Zavodni, MPH, RD, LDN, registered dietitian specializing in outpatient nutrition therapy for eating disorders, family nutrition and childhood feeding, and intuitive eating

Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating is a practical, child-focused, and guilt-free guide to addressing a variety of eating challenges. This book respects and values the parent as an expert. The nonjudgmental approach and easy-to-follow techniques will empower parents to make family mealtime a positive experience. By providing a sound overview of feeding development, Rowell and McGlothlin changed my understanding of typical eating. The suggested scripts and keen insight into the child’s perspective takes the guesswork out of applying the STEPS+. I walked away with a deeper understanding of how children experience feeding and how my own ‘feeding temperament’ affects how I relate to my children around food. Short-order cooking is out the door and dessert is on the table with dinner now. We’re all enjoying a happier mealtime! My only wish is that I’d had this book when my children were babies. I would strongly recommend this book to any parent who is struggling with mealtime.”
―Erin Erickson, MPH, MN, RN, founder and cohost of Mom Enough®

“Katja Rowell and Jenny McGlothlin
get the anxiety and many challenges both children and families feel when children are highly selective eaters! They offer sensitive, thoughtful, and practical suggestions to support families in their journey toward happier and healthier mealtimes.”
―Marsha Dunn Klein, MEd, OTR/L, FAOTA, pediatric therapist, educator, author, and co-owner of Mealtime Connections, a pediatric therapy clinic in Tucson, AZ

“Lots of books promise to help solve ‘picky eating’ problems, but this one actually does! Rowell and McGlothlin have put together a comprehensive masterpiece.”
―Skye Van Zetten, blogger at mealtimehostage.com

“Finally! Not just an acknowledgment, but an exploration and even a ‘how-to manual’ on dealing with the long-neglected missing piece of pediatric feeding therapy―the emotional dynamic for both the child and the parent! Let’s face it, eating is not just about nutrition. It’s also about enjoyment and family relationships. This gets lost amidst health and medical concerns when a child severely limits his eating. Katja Rowell and Jenny McGlothlin have given us a map for restoring and healing these components as well. Parents and therapists alike will be profoundly grateful.”
―Jennifer Meyer, MA, CCC-SLP, cocreator of care-to-collaborate.com, and popular international speaker in the areas of pediatric dysphagia and neonatal therapy

“Finally, there’s a solid resource for families who struggle with extreme picky eating! Rowell and McGlothlin leave no stone unturned as they help parents navigate all aspects of their child’s eating, from the ‘how’ of family dinners to decisions about feeding therapy. I will recommend this book again and again.”
―Maryann Jacobsen, MS, RD, author, blogger, speaker, and coauthor of Fearless Feeding

Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating is wonderful! I currently work with a young male client who struggles with eating, and I can honestly say that this information is so crucial for even mental health therapists who are working to help families dealing with feeding issues. I wish all school counselors could have access to this material. The material in this book has assisted me in helping my client’s family in a way that I was struggling to before reading! Thank you for writing this tremendously helpful text!”
―Christine J. Schimmel, EdD, NCC, LPC, assistant professor of counseling at West Virginia University and author of numerous texts and articles on impact therapy, a multisensory, creative approach to counseling and group counseling

“A wonderful, parent-friendly resource that is easy to read and full of practical suggestions to help your child ‘come to the table!’”
―Catherine S. Shaker, MS/CCC-SLP, BCS-S, pediatric speech-language pathologist at the Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando, FL, and coauthor of “The Early Feeding Skills Assessment Tool for NICU Infants”

My son has ate the same things for over 10 years. He is extremely picky. Once he's had a food too much he then stops eating it. This book provided me insight on why he might eat like this, and on ways to help introduce new foods. Along with helping me understand the ways my son might see food. It was very insightful and I'm excited to start using the information I was given and helping my son eat better.

In my experience in the clinical setting, reading many books on the topic of nutrition and psychology and at home with my own picky eaters, I can easily say that this is an excellent book! There are nuggets of wisdom that can help any open minded parent and many picky little eaters!

Considering that most children go through periods of intake where they only accept a few food items, periods referred to as ‘food jags’, most parents will likely find solace in the techniques presented.

The gentle, stress free (or low stress - can you handle it Mom? Dad?) approach is a welcome light in the darkness of what feels like the dreaded job of making sure our beloved children receive the appropriate and best nutrition possible to meet their growing needs.

Get it, read it (or listen on audible), and implement it.

My family is so thankful for the wisdom shared in this book, my toddlers too! Really, they love our new approach and so do I!

Possibly it is good to note that my other approaches were all gentle, kind, loving and respectful. However, multiple degrees in nutrition and over a decade as a dietitian could not prepare me for the subtle intricacies of feeding toddlers.

Parents of children with feeding difficulties need to take advantage of this book, Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating by Katja Rowell, MD (family doctor and feeding specialist) and Jenny McGlothlin, MS, SLP (speech language pathologist specializing in pediatric feeding disorders). I’m a reader and reading is a preferred learning method for me personally. Repetition in learning feeding therapy strategies is always beneficial for parents. I’ve not seen a book so appropriately written, specifically for parents, to address feeding difficulties for children before. This book would be a great addition to participating in feeding therapy with your child. Really, I feel like this is a great summary of what I teach parents during a 3-4 month period of weekly feeding therapy.

Often, I remind parents of recommendations I’ve given in the past and they have forgotten. This book would be great to read before, during or after a child has received feeding therapy. It would really solidify the information given and parents could refer back to it easily.

If your child hasn’t started feeding therapy, I suggest reading this book one chapter at a time. Remember that I said it’s a good summary of what I teach parents over 3-4 months at a time? It is a large amount of information and could possibly be overwhelming all at once. Read a chapter, then take a week or two to really think and start applying the suggestions at home. Then go on through chapter by chapter like this until you’ve finished the book.

The philosophy of feeding therapy presented in this book addresses the importance of decreasing anxiety around food first, then to encourage and facilitate building skills in a trusting and safe mealtime environment. It mirrors my own feeding therapy philosophy. Towards the end of the book, the authors also discuss finding a feeding therapist and program that is a good fit for your child and family.

The book is written with a compassionate and realistic understanding of what children and parents go through when a child isn’t eating well. The authors structure the book around Jenny McGlothin’s STEPS+ feeding therapy approach.

STEP 1: Decrease Anxiety, Stress and Power Struggles.

STEP 2: Establish a Structured Routine

STEP 3: Have Family Meals

STEP 4: Know What to Serve and How to Serve It

STEP 5: Build Skills

Buy this book! Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating even has digital downloads to help implement book suggestions through the publisher, New Harbinger Publications.

I provide feeding therapy services in children’s homes in Davis, Morgan and Weber counties in Utah. If I am not in your area, Feeding Matters has compiled an extensive list of international feeding professionals. I’d love to help your family!

I read Ellyn Satter's works four years ago when my daughter, who ate everything as an infant, started slowly eliminating foods she would accept and eat around age two. I tried to implement Satter's recommendations as well as the recommendations of a pediatric dietitian but over the following four years my daughter didn't seem to expand her eating selections and the family frustration surrounding meal time only grew. I worried about my daughter's nutrition and I definitely did not look forward to family meals. Finally, a friend in the same field as Jenny recommended this book, knowing my frustration with my daughter's picky eating. It has been a real game changer for our family.

After reading the book, my first objective was to simply set up expectations with my daughter as well as the feeding routine and to make it a habit that is welcomed and not resisted. It really started working after the first few days. She was pleased with every meal I served and she started to enjoy the relaxed ambience of the dining table. I increased sweet snacks in the afternoon to things that were previously considered only special treats and I started to appreciate sweet snacks as a chance for her to try new textures and flavors, which I had not considered before.

Our first real success came at the dinner table. My daughter tried a chicken tender that did not look like anything she had eaten before. Her response was, "These are delicious chicken fingers!" I couldn't believe she had served herself and tried one. I truly believe that eliminating all encouragement and pressure to try or eat gave her the control she wants and she is more likely to try new things now.

Jenny and Katja's book is a MUST READ for any parent with a picky eater. While Satter's renowned research serves as the basis for the recommendations in the book, Jenny and Katja incorporate the necessary insights on child temperament and parent expectations to serve up a perfect recipe for real life success at the table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful, A MUST READ for any parent struggling with a picky eater
Reviewed in Canada on April 24, 2020
This book has been a saviour. It touches on the "how" children are fed, rather than "what" to feed them. It takes the pressure and anxiety out of feeding your children. I have an extremely sensory sensitive son, who is extremely picky with food. It has been very stressful the past 7 years trying to get him to eat. With an overwhelming amount of advice/opinions out there, this book makes sense of it all and has put me at ease. It talks about:
:decreasing stress, anxiety, and power struggles
:how to establish a routine
:how to enjoy pleasant family meals
:how to build skills in "what" and "how" to feed
:how to strengthen and support oral motor and sensory skills
It talks about parent worries of deficiencies, pressure tactics (the one bite rule and why it doesn't work for everyone) and an all encompassing "how to" approach of feeding your child that actually works.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you’ve ever felt stressed at dinnertime, read this book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 20, 2020
I found this book by accident whilst searching for toddler recipe books on Amazon. Once I started reading, I quickly realised the issue for my picky toddler wasn’t ‘what’ food I served him but ‘how’ i.e. the atmosphere at dinner time. This is a truly practical guide to creating a positive approach to mealtimes for the whole family. It is so much more than just the typical trite advice about turning off the TV and offering vegetables. The authors discuss a range of feeding challenges in a reassuring and sensitive way. That said, whether you have an extreme picky eater or an adventurous eater, I think all parents have something to gain from reading this book.
