And Shadow of the Tomb Raider brings all of those things back into focus, which the second in the reboot had sorely lacked. Lara's most recently raided tomb turns the story on its head, and makes her question whether she's actually helping or hurting the world--is she a good force or a bad force in the world? Without spoiling anything, I think it would be fair to say that the conclusion of the story and its entire gameplay hinges on whether or not she can come out of her own shadow.
I don't honestly understand some of the criticism of this installment. As a game, I enjoyed the balance of tombs, gear, skills, specializations, puzzles, action, etc. It even has replay value that the others do not. I cannot wait for the next installment!
I never played the original TR, but recently completed ROTR, and enjoyed it so much that I decided to get this as well. Like Rise it has the feel me of the Uncharted series although with some differences that make this game different. Having recently played Rise, this game feels very familiar as well in terms of style and gameplay, so I was able to comfortably settle in and know pretty much what to expect in terms of how to play the game.
Rise has some beautiful landscape but they are even nicer and more detailed here with its lush landscapes and nicely done details. The smaller items, such as the animals, seem better done and more detailed. The cutscenes are also very well done. With a sequel there are some things that I think are done a bit better and some that I think could have been left alone. Maybe it is because I am use to the game, but I feel that the tutorial is a bit better in the initial stages of the game than Rise. It still, at times, leaves you to figure out certain things or minor quests, such as shooting down bird nests or things like that. This is less of an irritant than in Rise as things now glow bright yellow, instead of the sometimes hard to see faded glow from Rise, in survival mode, which makes it a bit easier to see and find things.
Rise’s controls were a bit finicky, but that seems to be improved here as the as climbing, jumping, descending, seem to be smoother and a bit easier to do. The game adds a few new tricks such as repelling, which adds to the fun. Like Rise, the game is a bit linear, although more of a limited open world kind of way. The area is larger than Rise though and like that game, there are various areas to discover as well as the ability to find new areas, such as crypts and challenge tombs and various other things that you can explore depending on the items you have. The map detail is improved and a bit easier to use than Rise, which is a welcome addition. I did not really like the Rise map, which made the areas feel completely separate and difficult to navigate at times.
Like Rise, there is quite a bit of backtracking through areas as you will have to go back to explore those crypts and tombs that you either miss or just can’t access for one reason or another, which can be a bit monotonous at times. In a way, it is a way that the game artificially extends the game playing time by preventing you from tackling all of the things as you explore the area you are in. Like Rise there are a few RPG’ish elements with an ability tree as well. The ability tree here seems a bit more crowded and harder to read than Rise. I personally prefer the simple Rise version than the version here, which looks nicer, but is too crowded.
It seems there is less fighting than Rise, but stealth and fighting are better done and less problematic than in Rise. It seems smoother to be stealthy and combat also seems to work better too. Unlike Rise where if you are spotted, every enemy knows where you are, in this game, you can lose your pursuers and hide again. With that being said, there is way more exploration than in Rise. There are more obstacles to figure out and a lot of more tomb exploration than in Rise. There is a decent variety, but some can be a bit frustrating as well. The game helps somewhat with your “vision” that helps highlight some helpful areas, but even still it isn’t always clear what you need to do. Some of the same collecting and deciphering are back too for those that like hunting down all the different pieces of lore and such.
The story is pretty good and helped by good voice acting of the main characters. The secondary characters could have been a bit better as some are lacking accents you would expect for the regions that you are exploring.
The side missions in Rise were pretty meh, and there are side missions here as well and I found them not to be as compelling as the main part of the game and the crypt exploration.
Swimming is also improved here as well. In Rise, it mostly served as a way to get from point a to point b. Here, you can collect things and fully explore the water. Graphically, the water looks much better as well.
Whereas Rise was balanced with its blend of action, adventure and puzzle solving, Shadow is more exploration and quite a bit less combat/action. For those that like combat and more action, the exploration of a number of tombs can feel a bit monotonous and grindy as you are working to aquire the tools and abilities you need to be able to open up more areas of the map.
Even limited in its open world concept, it does seem to flow better than Rise.
With that being said, there is not much new here and it feels a bit too similar to Rise, even still, I like it and find it to be fun to play.
