Works exactly as I need it to for solid home security
I've been using these little cameras for a bit over 1 week now and they have been excellent for me so far. I'll go over a few of the features I love and some that need a bit of improvement in my opinion.WEATHER PERFORMANCE: I live in Northwest Ohio and it gets very cold around here in the fall/winter time so one of my top concerns was cold weather performance. In the week since I hooked these up the temps have gone down to between -5 and 5 degrees twice and I've had no drop-off in performance or battery life as far as I can tell. They were still detecting motion seemingly every time, whether it is me going to the front door, the mailman, or the little squirrel family that lives in my maple tree in the front yard. Now clearly I understand if it wasn't working properly then it would be hard for me to tell because probably nothing would be detected, so that's why I test it myself with motion and check the "live feed" or even take a quick screen shot (both are nice litter features) to make sure it's running properly.SETUP: Setup is so...so easy. It took me no more than a half an hour to unbox, set up the app, connect the cams to the sync module and my wifi, put them in their wall mounts, and mount them up outside. The app gives you very simple step-by-step instructions on exactly what to do and even gives multiple suggestions on how to choose good locations around your home based on the capabilities and weaknesses of the camera (for instance, its motion detection works extremely well when seeing side-to-side motion, but is much less effective at seeing motion to or from straight-on so you should set up the cams in a position where the motion will almost always be starting from the side).CONNECTIVITY: Connectivity is very good. I've seen quite a few 1-2 star reviews because people are getting weak signals to their cams from the sync module or the wifi. A recent firmware update has drastically improved the signal range of the cams, and if you are having an issue with connectivity I can suggest these simple but easy-to-forget things that can affect it: 1)You have multiple other wireless devices in between the cams and their module - these cams run on a 2.4 gHz frequency along with almost every single other wireless device on planet Earth (seriously we could really use some more 5 gHz compatible devices out there). This frequency can get crowded and slow down or weaken every device's connection on it. Try turning a few off or even just moving them to a different location in your home. Some of these devices are wireless home phones, cell phones with wifi, smart home devices like smart locks and thermostats, etc. 2) You have the sync module or camera set up very close to large pieces of metal, piping, or mirrors - Yes, it is true that large mirrors can play havoc on a wifi signal. Large and thick pieces of metal or copper piping can also affect signals. Just try moving the device to another location. 3)You have a bad wifi router - maybe it's time to start thinking about an upgrade to your router. I use a pretty nice Asus Dual-Band AC1900 mesh router and have not had a single issue with any connectivity even though my cameras are outside about 50-75 feet away from the room containing my router and my house has a brick exterior wall on top of that.FEATURES: It has cool features. I really like the ACTIVITY ZONE feature where you can set up "dead zones" where you expect constant motion within the frame and simply don't want your cams to pay attention to it. For example: I have a camera set up in my back yard (as you may see in my included pics) that has my back door in frame but I also wanted it to have the shed in the back corner of my yard in frame too because it contains my nice John Deere lawn mower and all my landscaping tools that I don't want people to be able to steal. In order to get my shed in frame...I also have to include 2 gargantuan oak trees in my back yard as well which triggers the camera every single time the wind blows a branch or some leaves around. This would eventually lead to 157 motion notifications on my phone every day and a very dead camera battery after a few weeks or months. However with the activity zone feature I just painted a dead zone across the entire top of the frame where all the tree branches are located and it's really as simple as that...no more false triggers at all. CLIP LENGTH AND RE-TRIGGER. I'm not sure why I see a lot of people complaining about the "short" clip length time and "long" re-trigger time. The max clip length is 60 seconds which when you really think about it, is WAY more than plenty to catch anything important happening. If something bad or important is going to happen that's worth catching, it usually happens within 5 to 10 seconds which is almost exactly how long every single one of my clips tend to be which leads me to another cool feature - the cams can be set to automatically END RECORDING EARLY if the motion stops for more than a few seconds which can drastically improve battery life. I have my clip length time set to 45 seconds just to make sure I'm able to catch all the important stuff that may happen...but the longest clip I have on recording so far has been 23 seconds of a UPS guy delivering a package to my door and then standing there for a few seconds to scan the package with a scanner and complete some paperwork. Then there is the "re-trigger" time. It's another feature built in as a battery saving feature so the camera isn't constantly clicking "on, off, on, off, on, off" if someone or something is just barely stopping in and out of the frame to trigger it. I understand people's complaints because they don't wanna miss ANYTHING. Well I can tell you...yes you do wanna miss some things that are very unimportant or irrelevant like birds swooping back and forth in frame or leaves getting blown around by wind. Without a re-trigger delay your cams would probably record 35 clips within 1 or 2 mins and every single clip would be a leaf rolling around or a squirrel zipping back and forth. Then your battery dies in weeks and you'll be complaining about terrible battery life. The re-trigger minimum time is a 10-second delay and I can tell you with confidence that it really is not a big deal at all. Your security will NOT be compromised by this feature. The IR NIGHT VISION works pretty well, it's as clear as you could hope in pitch black. I can easily recognize the features of my own face or the faces of my neighbors and friends when they trigger the cam at night. The only complaint I have is the IRNV RANGE. It can only see that clearly up to about 15 or 20 feet away. After that you can tell a person-shaped object is there but can't clearly make out any distinct features. However there is a feature in the app where you can change the IR intensity which may help improve the range of sight. I admittedly have not tried this yet and only left it on the default setting of "medium." As you may expect during the day, you can see fully featured objects/people/animals from about 35-40 feet away which is about as good as a human can do with their own eyes. The MICROPHONE is cool too. The cams record audio surprisingly very loud and very clear. I could easily understand every word of an entire conversation I was having with my dad in the front yard one day that got recorded standing about 20 or 30 feet away from the cam. The fact that it has a mic I can speak through is cool but honestly was not all that important to me, but it may be for you so I will include the fact that it is very good quality with loud and clear sound from both ends.Quick Pros/Cons Breakdown:ProsTotally wireless & outstanding battery life!Very good motion detection.Great cold weather performance.Unboxing and setting up the cams and the app is a friggin breeze. If you position the cams and sync module well, and have even a halfway decent wireless router, you won't have any connectivity issues.Cool extras like the "activity zones" and "end recording when motion ends" features that improves both the usability and the battery life of the system.Decent IRNV (infra red night vision)Works very well when up close (within 20 feet to see detailed features or 30-40 feet to see objects in motion).Pretty good Cloud sotrage service with tons of online clip storage space that I can access from my phone or my tablet anywhere and anytime I want. I can also straight-up download any of the clips directly to my device in case I want/need that particular clip to be saved forever.Once you see your blind spots (you'll be able to find them very easily once you realize what you can and can't see with your current setup), you can easily add new cams to the system at any time via the app and they are not expensive at all.ConsUsing IRNV at night, anything outside of 20 feet away from the camera is not much other than a fairly bright, pixelated moving object with not much detail to be seen.As I said in the "Pros" section, the cloud storage service is good and works well. The only problem I have with it is that is the only place you can access your saved clips unless you download them. They cannot be accessed on a pc app or by going to a Blink-affilliated website or something like that. It's completely dependent on smart phones and tablets.Had to buy outdoor mounts with customizable angles separately. I also bought the mounts that have an outlet plug mount for the sync module, feeling I kinda had to otherwise the sync module is just this little box about the size of a deck of cards just sitting there on a table/counter top with a cord coming out of it. Blink definitely should be including an outlet mount for the module at the very least. These things wouldnt be that expensive for the company to include...I paid 20 bucks for a package that included 3 outdoor weather-resistant mounts and the sync module outlet mount. I understand they do it this way because they can and get an extra sale out of the deal...but come on this is a simple little thing.Overall they have been working absolutely excellent for me and at a good price for very good quality cams. I highly recommend to anyone looking to get a home security system
2 month update: After using the Blink system for a couple of months, we continue to be very pleased with it. We have learned to tweak the setting a bit for different needs. First, we improved the resolution to the 1080p setting, mostly for night vision. Without it, the images of wildlife in the yard are a bit blurry. For night time, we also increased the UV illumination to the high setting for a better image and we increase the sensitivity to 7 at night to pick up critters going through the yard. During the day, we drop the sensitivity to 6 so it doesn't go off every time a bird flies by.
All in all the Blink gives us everything that we could hope for from such a reasonably priced system.
I just got my 2 camera XT2 set. After reading all of the negative reviews, I was worried that this might not work, but it could not have been easier to set up and so far, the signal strength and images seem fine.
All you do is download the app on your phone take a picture of the serial number of the sync module and it automatically picks up the serial number. Then plug it in and your phone will sync with the module. Then connect the module to your wifi router.
Once that is done, you will get a firmware update on the sync module. Then it asks you if you want to add devices. Say yes and then you take pictures of the serial numbers in each camera, pop in the batteries and each is automatically added to your app and each of them gets a firmware update.
Once that is done, go through the setting for each camera, setting your preferences for sensitivity to motion and turn on the motion detection and you are set to go. The images do have a short lag, as they record activity and send it up to the Blink servers, then advice comes to your phone. Images were very clear at the Best setting (I have not yet tried the Enhanced setting). I even tried a dark image and it was fine.
Instructions were very easy to follow, set-up probably only took about 15 or 20 minutes total and you are set to go, other than installing the mounts, which I'll do later. So far, I'm very pleased with these cameras and think they offer a very strong combination of image quality, ease of use and value.
6-9-19 update: I've had the system for a couple of days now and have made it through 2 days and nights. I continue to be very pleased with the system. Everyone is impressed with the image quality during the day and while it obviously isn't anything like daytime, I was still able to get a good view of a possum going through my yard the other night. The range from the camera to the sync module is limited, but works fine for my positioning. I don't use the microphone because I am using them in my back yard and I don't need to talk to the bunnies and squirrels. It did work though, when I tested it out.
Update 1/23/20: I am changing my review rating to 5 stars as I had a blink representative reach out to me to address my issues. The Rep did an excellent job (Kudos to you) with getting my issues resolved with the faulty sync module and was very professional. I now have a working system and so far it works great. The cameras do a good job with video quality for both day/night however if you need a camera that allows you to use zoom or control the camera through the app then you will need to look at another solution. All in all this is a great, simple, and inexpensive security camera solution. I have yet to play much with the settings so I will be working on tuning them a little more.
I have been looking at these XT2 cameras for several months now and finally purchased some for myself and as a gift. I have read very good reviews about them so I was excited to get them installed and working. Well I got as far as installing the Blink APP on my iPhone and creating my account. The next step is to verify that the sync module lights are lit up (Green/Blue) and thats the end of it. I tried using the reset button numerous times but could never get the lights to work as stated in the instructions. I even tried to continue but it just failed to connect. Now I understand hardware is hardware and your gonna have some duds here and there but what really pisses me off is that I cant get support. Called Blink support numerous times and each time I am on hold for 10min then an automated answering service picks up and says that no one is available and to leave a message. This went on for several days so I gave up and sent them an email requesting a replacement. Also this is after the holidays so they should be staffed properly. I have not heard back from them so when or if they respond I will update this review. I also called Amazon about a replacement since the one I got was defective and they directed me to Blink which again I tried calling their sales/order team to no avail. So if I dont get a response from Blink support in the next 48hrs then these are going to be returned to Amazon for my money back. As my first experience with their support I can honestly say I am completely pissed off for the lack of any communication period. Its like why even have a phone number if your not going to answer and that includes sales/order team. Ridiculous...
