    Product Description

    Product Description

The Maksutov optical design is recognized for being a portable design that is easy to use and has a variety of applications, making it an excellent choice for both terrestrial and astronomical usage. This C90 Mak has excellent optics with razor sharp images over a wide field. Maksutov-Cassegrain Optical Design The MAK is a catadioptric spotting scope, which means the optical design includes both a lens and a mirror. The light coming through a MAK passes through the corrector lens to the primary mirror and back to a spherical secondary mirror before it hits the eyepiece. Images are bright, sharp, and virtually free of chromatic aberration. The Maksutov-Cassegrain’s optical design offers several unique benefits. Instead of a secondary mirror, the MAK features a “secondary spot” of reflective coating applied directly to the inside of the corrector plate. Because of this, the spotting scope does not require frequent collimation. Also, the secondary spot is significantly smaller, giving the MAK its signature high-contrast views. One important thing to note about Maksutov-Cassegrain spotting scope is that the larger, heavier Maksutov corrector plate takes longer to cool down and adjust to ambient air temperature.

Celestron should call this little mak the Mighty Mak!

Celestron should call this little mak the Mighty Mak!
For what this scope does, it weighs practically nothing. Celestron is marketing this as a spotting scope which gives you a limited lifetime warranty. I would avoid any of the used ones as Celestron has said this is only for the initial owner. At $150 the $20 you will save on a used one may not be worth it, especially if you need support down the road.As of the date I ordered it, this scope no longer comes with the tripod. The tripod kit & scope is still available at a slightly higher cost and the tripod can also be purchased separately from Celestron. Most of the reviews say the included tripod was barely adequate and they seemed inclined to replace it with a sturdier tripod. For accessories you get the nylon backpack carrying case, a 32mm plossl eyepiece (not bad for an included eyepiece & gives you a 39X view), a 45° erecting diagonal, and finally an 8X21 finderscope. The finderscope can be easily replaced as it uses a semi-standard guide mounted dovetail and can be replaced with Celestron, or Orion products such as the 50mm guide scope and other products as well. With its long focal length of 1,250mm you WILL need a firm steady heavy tripod for any kind of viewing. A photo tripod, even with the legs unextended may still wobble enough where it will make focusing and using this telescope a serious chore. Making focusing a bigger chore, this telescope also has a narrow depth of field. That is, if you aim at a tree a few miles away, you may see the middle of the tree in focus while the further and closer parts may be blurry. I did mount this on my Celestron CG-5 Computerized German Equatorial Mount 91518 and it worked like a charm on the night sky and became really pleasant to focus and work with once on a firm enough mount. It does appear the interior may not be baffled as well as some other scopes. If you are nearing a bright object like Spica, Saturn etc. you will see a stretched out circle pointing towards the object. This however, does make it easier to find the object you are looking for. Adding an aftermarket dew shield will probably help with this if it bothers you. AstroZap Flexible Dew Shield For Meade ETX 90 and Celestron C-90 Telescopes AZ103 As I mentioned the C90 currently comes with one eyepiece, a 32mm plossl which will yield about 39X. This eyepiece will enable to you to see Saturn's rings when properly aimed and focused. I did use a Explore Scientific 6.7mm eyepiece which yielded about 187X which would be considered the 'upper limit' in magnification for this scope. Even though the night was windy and it was a hazy night this scope did a better job that I expected and it was able to easily view Saturn's rings! While mounted on firmly on the CG5 (the C90 has a dovetail with two standard 1/4X20 holes for use on photo tripods and three holes drilled for use on standard astronomy mounts) was a dream to focus. I actually found it easier than my Explore Scientific 102mm f/7 Air-Spaced Triplet ED Apochromatic Refractor Telescope and didn't even bother to use my Farpoint FP401 Bahtinov Focus Mask for Telescopes with Dew Shield or Front End Diameter from 3.5" to 6.5" when focusing on stars. This was just as easy to focus with an eyepiece or with a Canon 7d DSLR attached. The C90 comes with threads that will fit a standard T ring, so you do not need to order a T-adapter to use this scope at prime focus. When ordering a ring, make sure you don't order an M42 ring as the thread size is the same but one is a finer thread. They will connect up together but will only go on for one or two threads and if you force it, you will be cross threading and ruining one or both of your devices. Note, the 7D when directly attached to this scope for prime focus photography, the moon will just about fill the entire frame of view on the 7D and other camera's with a similar sensor size.I will be updating this review once I get a steady alt/az mount for bird watching & terrestrial viewing. All in all, I am pleasantly surprised with this scope as it has exceeded my expectations!

This fits the criteria for a light-weight, pick-up and go. The main purpose will be astronomy. I envision plenty of other use cases. I'll stick with the universe.

All the components were packed neatly and individually inside the compartments of the carry bag. It took 5 minutes to put together. I had to wait patiently for a tripod (home use) and mini dobsonian stand (road use) to arrive before setting up the finder scope. I also ordered a 90° diagonal for night viewing. The 45° degree is great for birds on the lake, and uncomfortable when pointing towards the planets.

The finder scope is fine. It requires a different technique to align your telescope than using a red dot. Complaints in this realm are a matter of preference. Unless you're using a Go-to system, you're never going to point at something you can't see.

The views and images are very clear and crisp. My photos through the supplied 32mm eyepiece don't do this device justice. In 5° weather, I opted to point the telescope through double paned windows, a major No-No, but you get the gist.

This far, I'm pleased with my purchase

Thanks to the weather so far I have only tried the scope for terrestrial use and I am astonished by the image quality. Its sharpness and clarity are well beyond what I expected for such a small and inexpensive telescope. The build quality is very solid and the included eyepiece is very good with no distortion or chromatic aberration. I also used the telescope as a lens for my EOS 20D and the resulting images were very good as well (it requires an inexpensive T ring adapter to hook the camera body to te rear of the telescope).

The included backpack is quite simple but gets the job done and it is the perfect size to carry the telescope tube, the viewfinder (unmounted), the 45 degree prism (unmounted) and several eyepieces.

The only minor complaint is that the included eyepiece included no covers so that when it is not mounted both ends are exposed and if it is mounted still one end is unprotected.

The viewfinder alignment is very simple and it takes just a few minutes to get it done and from then it does not move.

Complement this with a Celestron 8-24 mm 1.25" zoom eyepiece and you get a wide range of power to suit your needs.

      UPDATE
There was a short break on the clouds some nights ago and I could watch Jupiter. Of course the image is nowhere near like illustrations from astronomy books but is quite a distinctive feeling to know that you are gazing at the real thing. I am sure that the atmospheric conditions were not great and because of that Jupiter came out as a small whitish circle but I could still see some color bands and 3 moons nearby. No luck with the moon yet.

Please get a decent solid tripod. I tried with a standard photography and video one and the result is quite bad. The whole thing shakes with the slightest touch on the focus knob. Fortunately I also have a Manfrotto tripod with a ballhead and this setting is much more usable but I still would ask you to get another head, a ballhead is far from ideal for this use but on the other hand is very solid.

This is very small and easy to use. The eyepiece is a mid-grade optic. It comes with an adaptor for 1.25" eyepieces. I use an Omni 40mm and 35 most of the time. Its size makes it easy to use for sightseeing and some astronomy. The rubber shell of this scope doesn't allow for a finder scope to be mounted so I wouldn't recommend this for astronomy. The mount that comes with this scope is rather good. It requires a table or solid platform to work so I bought a separate tripod because those items aren't always available to stabilize the scope. This is very well made and worth the price. At this price point you will not find a better scope.

Bought this scope for target shooting at 300 yards. At shorter ranges our rifle scopes were sufficient for identifying shots. However, at 300 yards it began to get difficult to differentiate shots, especially if they were close to one another or other marks on the target. With the Celestron C5, we're able to easily differentiate .204 and .308 on Shoot-n-See targets easily, .308 on cardboard without much trouble, and on day with good visibility .204 can also be seen on cardboard with a bit of difficulty. While we haven't tried it farther than 300 yards, with a .308 on Shoot-n-See targets I think you'd be good to 600 yards or so (as long as it isn't a hot day - the heat shimmer distorts things). We had also tried a Vortex Diamondback 20-60x80 (having had great success with Vortex rifle scopes), but found this far superior to it.

      Some things worth noting:

      * Because this is based on a telescope, the eyepiece is interchangeable with other 1.25" mount eyepieces. In our case, we didn't use the eyepiece that came with it, but instead use an 8mm - 24mm zoom eyepiece (Celestron 93232). You can find the effective magnification by dividing the focal length (1250mm) by the eye piece's. So in this case, it would be 52x to 156x. The eyepiece that comes with this scope has a fixed 50x magnification.

      * It comes with an amazing carrying case. The Vortex had a cheap bag with a zipper on it. This comes with a nylon (or similar - not sure it is technically nylon) case that has custom cut foam in it that everything nestles into nicely. The cut-outs in the foam also are able to hold the 45 degree mirror and the eyepiece comfortably (in fact, in our case we have both eyepieces in it).

      * Focus is extremely sensitive, but the focus mechanism still has a good feel to it and is geared in such a way that you don't easily overshoot the focus without noticing (it takes something like 40 turns to go from 20' to infinity).

      * That said, if the sun is out or the ground is hot, the heat shimmer is sufficient to make it difficult to find the best focus, and even if you do, it does make it more challenging to clearly see your shots. That's not the scopes fault. With a cheaper scope or lower magnification you might not even notice the shimmer from the heat. With this you definitely do. Still, even with that, it's good for 300 yards.

      * At this high of a magnification, any little touch makes it shake, so get a stable tripod. We ended up purchasing a tripod head that is really meant for telescopes - you get it pointed in the right general direction, then use knobs to slowly dial it into position. That's a heck of a lot easier than playing with a ball head or even a decent pan and tilt head. That head is the Orion 7033 precision slow-motion adapter.

      * I also ended up mounting this using the same quick release plates I use with my camera. Those are made by Giotto's. The MH649 long quick release plate has sufficient space on it to tighten down on both of the tripod screw holes on here, which is extremely solid. Even with that, there's still some play in the tripod head, so once you get it lined up, you'll still want to look through it without quite touching it.

      * Being a telescope, there's a lot of other fun things to do with it. It is sufficient for some amateur astronomy. And Celestron makes mounting hardware to attach a DSLR camera to it.

Honestly, for this price I couldn't be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Telescopio compacto, ideal para ver planetas
Reviewed in Mexico on February 15, 2023

5.0 out of 5 stars Biggest of the little scopes!

This is my C5 on the Celestron heavy duty Alt-az mount. Pretty good pairing. Old school manual analog setup. No electronics. My scope arrived with perfect collimation. The XLT coating makes the front glass look so clear, at a certain angle, I did a double-take to check if the glass was missing.

First thing I did was replace the 45 deg diagonal with a 90 deg star diagonal. The finderscope is pretty much useless so that would change next. The travel case is much, much cheaper quality than I hoped, but it is free and useful so I can’t complain too much.

I was strongly considering the C90 at first, but after reading many Cloudy Nights posts, I went with the C5. Overall I’m very happy with this gorgeous instrument, which was once worthy of being on the Space Shuttle.

Can’t wait for the snow outside to clear up so I can put it through it’s paces. Clear skies, y’all!

This scope constantly unfocuses itself without my touching the focusing wheel. The focus wheel is very sensitive so I think it was over-oiled. The plastic body also smells bad. I cannot use this scope.
