You take off the entire top part, add the sand packets to the bottom, then add 1/4 cup of water evenly to that, then add ants. (you can mail order them or get them out of your back yard). We opted to get them out of the backyard. The stick they included to help get ants into the enclosure was pretty useless. It was actually kind of hard to wrangle ants and get them in the small hole. We managed to catch 9. Did you know when ants feel like they are being wrangled up they get really fast? We got 9 black ants (fairly large ones). Tried getting them from the same location hoping they would all be from the same colony. Not sure if that matters though.
They didn't do much for the first bit. I put in a cotton ball soaked in water and some sugar (but the directions say add fruit or bread, and only a couple drops of water). They love the sugar, didn't touch the bread. They began digging after a day. Making little tunnels and stuff. I learned from YouTube that without a queen these 9 ants will die in about 3 weeks no matter how well we care for them.
The "door" at the top is pretty small, and it's secure. Ants can not get out unless someone leaves the door open. It's been hours of fun to watch. I catch myself just staring at it because it is interesting to watch the ants work, although this was purchased for my 5 year old's amusement.
I have been wondering if we can reuse the enclosure again after the ants expire, or if I need to just get a new one. They aren't that expensive, but it seems like a waste to just throw it out.
No ants actually come with his farm, but the instructions include a discount code that you can use to order ants directly from Uncle Milton's. My ant order took about a week to reach me. There were quite a few ants in the tube.
I carefully placed them in the farm and placed a small cube of carrot in the farm. Within minutes that ants had begun to build. What can I say, it was really interesting to them working over the next few weeks. Every other week, I put in a few more drops of water and some more food.
All in all, I think the ants lasted about 2 months. They were quite entertaining the whole time. I will happily order more ants in eat future. This would be a great educational project for kids.
We have lost a few but several are still working a month after she started her farm

We have lost a few but several are still working a month after she started her farm
1. The “sand” they put in is much too light. It’s almost like styrofoam bits with how light and clingy it is. It clung to the ants and was so loose that anytime they tried digging, it would just collapse back onto them.
2. The entrance is much too small to do anything with it. I’ve been having to just take off the whole lid to feed and water them.
3. The tube they give you to connect holes is completely useless without another farm. If you try just looping it around to another hole in the ant farm, it’s too small so it folds on itself and the ants can’t get through
4. The plastic lids for the holes are too loose. I left my house over the weekend and when I got back, I noticed that the little lid had fallen out. I guess the ants noticed it too because they built a little hill to the whole and ESCAPED. ALL OF THEM ESCAPED!!! Keep in mind these are the red poisonous harvester ants! And since then I’ve been finding these suckers around my room! I even found one near my bed. Needless to say, burning my whole house down was not worth it for this farm T^T (that last part was a joke, I didn’t burn my house down. Still, don’t buy this)
