Editorial Reviews

Review

Honey and Jam makes you feel like you're in Appalachia with Hannah Queen, picking fruit out back and baking. Living in the woods of Northern California, I understand how a place and its local produce can inspire creativity and recipes, and she portrays this notion so well with rich photography and unforgettable desserts." ― Erin Gleeson, The Forest Feast

Beautiful book! I want to try practically every recipe. I find it very convenient that it is divided by seasons so I can zero right in on a recipe that uses the freshest ingredients. Favorites so far are: rosemary cornmeal pound cake, dark sweet cherry upside down cake, strawberry layer cake, chocolate cherry cupcakes, cherry almond brown butter cake, savory spinach cake, and peach bundt with bourbon-brown butter glaze. I can't wait until fall and fresh apple cider to make apple cider doughnut cake and apple pecan cake. Actually, there are about 20+ fall and winter recipes I'm looking forward to trying. Maybe I'll do an addendum later this year after trying more recipes.

This has turned into my favorite cook book for baking. I am not an experienced baker so the first two sections on seasonal baking and pantry staples, supplies, & techniques have been very helpful. Some of the recipes are a little more complicated for me, but I've been able to easily follow the directions and they produce delicious results! There are some easier ones mixed in like the Cherry-Almond Brown Butter Cake. I really love all the bundt cake recipes. The Meyer Lemon Lavender Cake is my current favorite. Hannah Queen is also a talented photographer and the pictures in the book are beautiful!

Great book if you want to start baking more seasonally. The pictures are really amazing and I like the layout of the book. Though you will have to put in more effort in finding the ingredients for some of these recipes any trip to a local farmers market was definitely the thing to do.

So cute. Although the pages are full of basics for a new cook, it's still a litt of fun.

This book is just beautiful!! I love how it's arranged seasonally, and the photography + styling is stunning. So far I've just made the "apple cider doughnut cake" and it was super easy and so delicious! My 5 year old was so smitten he sat down to write a "list of cakes" he hopes to help make from this book :-)

This is only the second time I've published a review on Amazon but felt compelled as I absolutely love this book! The recipes look simple yet delicious and there is plenty of helpful information provided as well. The photos are stunning; makes me feel like I'm at home in the peace and serenity of the Appalachian mountains. I collect cookbooks and am placing this with my very favorites. Well done!!

Wonderful recipes and a beautiful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULLY PHOTOGRAPHED, EASY TO BAKE RECIPES - A STUNNER OF A BOOK
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 18, 2015
My family is European (German/Austrian/Dutch/Polish) so baking is not so much a past-time but part of our DNA and I'm always on the look-out for exciting new cakes and bakes to make for my family when they visit the UK (mainly to show them that us British gals can rustle up a nice 'kuchen' (cake) just as impressive as any that my family can).

I'm an avid reader and collector of cookbooks (many on baking) and this book is an answer to my prayers for 'something a little out of the ordinary'. Stunningly photographed throughout (nearly every recipe has a 'photo to accompany it), what impresses me is that the recipes are very short - many are three or four small paragraphs (ideal for the novice or regular baker) and some a little longer for when you have more time to spend baking: anyone can follow them, I promise you.

The recipes - well, what can I say? Check out these few titles and start salivating:

Pear & Almond Chocolate Cake (double 'yum')
Cranberry Orange Cake (ooooh)
Dark Chocolate Flourless Cake with Pomegranate Ganache
Candied Kumquat & Coconut Cake (delish beyond belief)
Blood Orange Olive Oil Cake (gooey)
Irish Cheddar Apple Cake
Apple Cider Doughnut Cake (OMG)
Summer Squash & Banana Cake (no words to describe it adequately)
Blueberry & Roasted Peach Ice Cream Cake
Rhubarb Buckle Cake
Dark Sweet Cherry Upside Down Cake (gone in 60 seconds - and not the film)
Black pepper roasted Strawberry Buttermilk Cake
Spiced Parsnip Cake (simply divine)

I've only had the book a few days but I've already made 8 from the list above (yes, I have got family visiting right now!!) and boy, are they FABULOUS. I already bake a Parsnip & Cumin Cake which is to die for, and Hannah's Spiced Parsnip Cake is a real twist (my family never guessed the 'secret ingredient') and LOVED the cake.

Quite simply - if you enjoy baking (or find it a great stress-reliever as I do), buy this book - you won't be able to put it down (well, only when you're baking!).

More, please, Hannah!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful book.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2015
I wholeheartedly subscribe to the first reviewer's observations. As SUE says, this book is fabulous. The recipes are easy to achieve for home bakers. But there is nothing banal or ordinary in this book. The inventiveness lies in the combination of flavours. Yes, there is apple cake - but the cider caramel makes it exquisite. Yes, there are shortcakes - but the pistachios take them to another level, and adding ginger is inspired. Yes, there is lemon cake, but with a Black Tea frosting. I could go on forever....
The book has a slightly rustic look to it, in the most positive sense of the word.
I have lots and lots of baking books, but this one is already a favourite !

5.0 out of 5 stars Even the ones that aren't (they have booze in the icing and I hate the taste of whisky) can be adapted

I've been wanting this book for ages and finally splurged...wow! Virtually every single recipe is drool-making. Even the ones that aren't (they have booze in the icing and I hate the taste of whisky) can be adapted. As a veteran of buying far too many baking books, this one has really perked up my anticipation. This book is expensive, but I recommend it absolutely. You won't be disappointed if you are looking for something creatively different and well thought out. Not you GBB run of the mill stuff - good though those are, this is in a much higher league.
