Teachers: timeline, “tech line,” research the styles, map the conflicts, geoplace the history as presented.
Two irritations, however, one of them minor but the other perplexing.
First, in the early going young Hornblower takes a prize ship into action flying false colors. Hornblowerites (and anyone else familiar with the customs of maritime warfare in those days) know that it was a legitimate ruse de guerre to fly false colors up to a point, but before opening fire it was mandatory to hoist the national colors. Failure to do so was an act of piracy under the conventions of the time, to say nothing of unforgivably dishonorable. Unlike the book, Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Hornblower fails to raise the true colors throughout the engagement, and when questioned about it dismisses it with a shrug and a "whatever works" comment. That may appeal to certain viewers in this age of the anti-hero swashbuckling macho man, but it would probably have ruined the career of a naval officer in Hornblower's day, despite the success of the action.
Second, the assault on the Spanish fortress in the Lieutenant Hornblower segment departs entirely from C.S. Forester's story, and the result is a shambles. The "real" attack was a straightforward dawn assault filled with risk and action. There were no deserters prior to the attack. There were no explosives smuggled into serendipitously discovered tunnels. The island's rebel forces made no appearance at all. Taken together with a tangle of subplots involving hostilities among the British officers and warrants, the whole scene was an almost indecipherable mess.
To return to the positive, the Captain Pellew character does an excellent job, neatly capturing the delicate balance between fondness for young Hornblower and the sternness necessary to rein in the latter's impulsiveness. Pellew several times gives Hornblower a look that speaks volumes: You have the makings of a fine officer, but you've a lot to learn.
The Hornblower purist will have a hard time gulping through the numerous departures from Forester's wonderful stories, but I think it's worth the effort -and the money- to enjoy a very good production.
For those interested, I actually thing this is one of the few cases where the on-screen adaptation matches and perhaps exceeds the novels.

Great not to have to depend on the internet being up, Siri, Alexa or the selection vagaries of any streaming company.
The series speaks for its self. Interesting bit of historical make believe.
They did a pretty good job of the period locations , ships and uniforms IMHO
