I saw some of the episodes on A&E years ago and wanted to watch it again. This series is exciting and superbly made.

While this series does not follow the books exactly, it is still a great series with action, adventure and likeable characters. I have really enjoyed it. I have watched all the episodes and I didn't have any incorrect DVDs as some reviews mention.

Just finished all 8 DVDs; wish there were more! Extremely well done. Excellent acting, directing, storytelling, character development, cinematography, suspense, locations, costumes, etc. I kept asking myself “How in the world is he going to get out of this predicament?” Sure made me appreciate our naval services, even though this was not US troops. Loved him in Amazing Grace & now I see how Horatio Hornblower prepared him for that role. Worth every penny I paid for this DVD set!

How to become….not a hero, but a man, a young man experiencing life’s challenges. A sense of history with the reality of style, social class and cohesion, conflict and falsehood and betrayal. This series of films and books is a great gift from generations past to those in the generation of now. See, read, research the era and the tech of that era.

Teachers: timeline, “tech line,” research the styles, map the conflicts, geoplace the history as presented.

To Hornblower aficionados the departures from C.S. Forester's plotting may seem a little offensive (or a lot, to the purist), but some of the changes worked rather well. For instance, the use of flashback from a Jamaican military court to cover most of the Lieutenant Hornblower plot was well done, allowing gaps in the story line to be not so jarring. Otherwise, most plot alterations in the interests of time compression aren't too serious, and all but the most serious Hornblowerite shouldn't have too much trouble with them. And by way of compensation, the producers do an excellent job with ship models that look very realistic in action, generally accurate costumery and very nice location settings. The acting is good overall, with very little of the stiffness that so often accompanies period pieces.

Two irritations, however, one of them minor but the other perplexing.

First, in the early going young Hornblower takes a prize ship into action flying false colors. Hornblowerites (and anyone else familiar with the customs of maritime warfare in those days) know that it was a legitimate ruse de guerre to fly false colors up to a point, but before opening fire it was mandatory to hoist the national colors. Failure to do so was an act of piracy under the conventions of the time, to say nothing of unforgivably dishonorable. Unlike the book, Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Hornblower fails to raise the true colors throughout the engagement, and when questioned about it dismisses it with a shrug and a "whatever works" comment. That may appeal to certain viewers in this age of the anti-hero swashbuckling macho man, but it would probably have ruined the career of a naval officer in Hornblower's day, despite the success of the action.

Second, the assault on the Spanish fortress in the Lieutenant Hornblower segment departs entirely from C.S. Forester's story, and the result is a shambles. The "real" attack was a straightforward dawn assault filled with risk and action. There were no deserters prior to the attack. There were no explosives smuggled into serendipitously discovered tunnels. The island's rebel forces made no appearance at all. Taken together with a tangle of subplots involving hostilities among the British officers and warrants, the whole scene was an almost indecipherable mess.

To return to the positive, the Captain Pellew character does an excellent job, neatly capturing the delicate balance between fondness for young Hornblower and the sternness necessary to rein in the latter's impulsiveness. Pellew several times gives Hornblower a look that speaks volumes: You have the makings of a fine officer, but you've a lot to learn.

The Hornblower purist will have a hard time gulping through the numerous departures from Forester's wonderful stories, but I think it's worth the effort -and the money- to enjoy a very good production.

This series was and is great. I remember them being one of my favorite historical adventures as a child and still feel that way.

For those interested, I actually thing this is one of the few cases where the on-screen adaptation matches and perhaps exceeds the novels.

This series is still magnificent. I hadn't watched it since the original airing on A&E nearly 20 years ago. it's not streaming anywhere (except Britbox ONLY in the UK, not US) so this 8-disc DVD set was the only way for me to watch it. The only shame is it's not a Blu Ray, but all episodes are still widescreen (int he 2010 release of the Complete collection). Definitely needs a Blu Ray release.

The writing, acting, direction, and production quality are first-rate. A great deal of expense and effort was made to portray the ships and costumes accurately. Gives an excellent rendition of seafaring and naval battles in the early 19th century. The characters portrayed are believable and sympathetic. See the extra feature "Royal Warships" on disc 4 (The Wrong War) for details on what life on a 19th century man-of-war was like.

The series speaks for its self. Interesting bit of historical make believe.
They did a pretty good job of the period locations , ships and uniforms IMHO
