From the company that has been developing robust, dedicated wearable technology to improve training metrics for athletes for more than a decade comes the GPS smartwatch for the active lifestyle. Introducing vívoactive — the ultra-thin, lightweight smartwatch with built-in Garmin sports apps that you can wear every day to help you keep a healthy balance between work and life.
From Work to Workout
Play harder, work smarter, live better with vívoactive. Built-in sports apps keep you active while smart notifications allow you to stay in contact with pressing work matters — all so you can keep your life in balance. The high-resolution, color touchscreen stays readable in direct sunlight, so you can view your stats when you step out of the office for a run. The ultra-thin profile — 8 mm — is comfortable to wear all day and can easily transition from office to golf course. You won’t have to worry about vívoactive keeping up with your active days. The rechargeable battery lasts through all your activities with up to 3 weeks5 in watch/activity-tracking mode or up to 10 hours using GPS.
Built-in Sports Apps
vívoactive features built-in sports apps that track your stats — even when away from your phone. Simply tap to choose among GPS-enabled running, golfing and cycling apps plus swimming and activity tracking.
Hit the Ground Running
Whether you’re training for a 5K or just for life in general, the running app uses GPS to capture essential running data such as distance and pace. A built-in accelerometer and wrist-based speed and cadence trackers eliminate the need for a separate foot pod when running on an indoor track or treadmill and also when GPS is unavailable. You can set up vibration alerts for heart rate¹, pace and run/walk intervals. Other training features include Auto Lap and Auto Pause. Automatic sync with Garmin Connect Mobile gives you a post-run summary, including calories burned and if you scored any personal records, such as your fastest or longest run to date.
Get In Gear
The GPS-enabled cycling app measures time, distance, speed and calories. Compatible with sensors² such as speed, cadence and heart rate monitors to measure your progress on training rides as well as daily commutes.
Tee Off
Pair with your smartphone³ to download course maps from our golf course database — with more than 38,000 courses worldwide — to play favorite and new courses. The golfing app keeps maps updated and tallies hole number and par. GPS measures layup and dogleg distances, as well as distances to the front, middle and back of the green, to improve usability over the entire hole. Individual stroke play scorecard lets you see if you’re under or over par. Measure shot distance at the press of a button. Round timer counts up time on the course, while the built-in accelerometer tracks your steps.
Dive In
Auto Length accelerometer-based technology automatically gauges total and interval distance; laps; calories burned; session average, interval and length pace; and stroke count, including number of strokes per length and interval and session averages. Let the swimming app calculate your efficiency with swolf, which adds the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length. View your time and interval distance at a glance. Interval Count lets you seamlessly pause and then resume your workout.
The thin profile cuts through the water, and its 5 ATM water rating means you can swim, sweat and shower with it on, worry-free.
Step It Up
vívoactive follows your progress even when you’re not engaged in a specific activity. The activity tracking app tracks your steps to learn your current activity level, then assigns an attainable daily step count goal. As you meet your milestones, the device will adjust your goal for the next day. The red move bar appears on the display after 1 hour of inactivity and builds when you’ve been sitting too long. Just walk for a couple of minutes to reset the move bar. Set the sleep mode when you go to bed and vívoactive will monitor your rest. It also tracks your calories burned.
Stay Connected
vívoactive gently vibrates to alert you to all the same notifications you receive on your compatible Bluetooth-enabled device4. Receive caller ID and missed call information for incoming calls. Text messages include sender information and message. Email messages come with sender and subject. vívoactive also displays notifications from Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, as well as other mobile apps, including weather alerts and temperature. Simply touch and swipe the screen to read more, or clear the screen with the press of a button.
Advanced Smartwatch Features
vívoactive lets you control the tunes on your music player, locate your phone and let your friends and family track your activities in real time with Live Track. You can also remotely control your VIRB Elite action camera.
Custom Apps and Watch Faces
Personalize vívoactive with free downloads from our Connect IQ store. You can customize your watch face, add data fields and get apps and widgets that provide information at a glance.
Challenge Yourself
Stay up to date on your progress for each of the built-in activities with automatic syncs with . You can earn virtual badges for extra motivation, join online challenges and connect, compete and compare with friends and family around the world. View your history and stats right on the smartwatch.

I don't know if there is a perfect solution for fitness tracking, smart watch capability, etc. but for my needs this watch comes about as close as anything I could find. I considered the Pebble as well as the speedo shine as alternatives. Ultimately the Garmin brand won me over and am continually surprised by little things with this watch that I enjoy. There were a few challenges initially when I got the watch but I've worked through them and will address those below.
I am a 40 year old trying to stay active and want a watch that will help me track my fitness activity. I've run many marathons, I swim at an indoor pool regularly and really like to mountain bike. The only thing that I feel is lacking is the internal HR monitoring. I do miss that from the Fitbit hr, but not enough to go back. I did a BUNCH of research before settling on this watch. I wanted a fitness tracker that could be used to track my lap swimming, would count steps, and could be used for biking or running. The smart watch capability wasn't that important to me but I have enjoyed some of those features. I generally keep the notifications turned off except for phone calls.
THE GOOD
For swim tracking it is REALLY nice. Works really well for pool swimming. You can select the pool length and then start swimming. I mostly do flip-turns but it also recognizes when I grab and go. The Garmin app connects with swim.com to keep a record of the workouts. The Garmin app itself also does a nice job of showing you data about your swim, i.e., stroke rate, swim time vs. rest time, avg. pace and speed/100m, calories burned etc. Swim.com just takes the data and organizes it in a little bit different way and allows you to compare with other swimmers in your area, etc. You can have the watch alert you when you've completed whatever number of lengths you prefer. That way you can focus on swimming and breathing and not counting laps. The notification is a slight vibration that comes about half way through the last lap. As far as I can see you have to set the lengths before swimming as during the workout it doesn't appear that you can change it...
Running, walking and cycling. The GPS is spot on. After activity it syncs and shows you everything you'd like to see and know about those activities, including; distance accurately measured by GPS, elevation gain/loss, calories burned, pace, map of your run/walk/ride. Really, really cool. I remember the days of using map my run to try to estimate your distance and then either having to run and stick to that path and using landmarks to estimate your distance... lol soo much better this way!
Watch face. I've read some reviews about how it's not bright enough. I haven't had an issue with that personally. In fact in the daylight it is AWESOME. The backlight works just fine in darker times. In the pool I see just fine. The Garmin IQ Store offers a TON of different watch faces. I have several that I like and will switch throughout the day depending on mood and what I'm doing. The Bat watch face is my favorite. I'm really hoping that the developers keep 'em rolling out.
Accessing your activity in multiple sources. You have your watch which will display key information, your phone using the Garmin Connect app, and you can view it on the Garmin Connect website.
Insights is a cool aspect within the Garmin Connect app. It analyzes your data and then gives you insights into your fitness to make improvements. I'm excited to see what it kicks out in the future. In addition to the insights, there is SOOOO much more to look at in the app... maybe too much? I don't know it just took a while to get used to the screens and where things are in the app.
My Fitness Pal links in with your account and you can record your food intake and compare it with your activity and caloric burn. I like how the two apps communicate back and forth... very good.
The watch isn't ugly. I have to say, wearing the fitbit sometimes it really stood out in a bad way. The Garmin watch is more comfortable for me, has the ability to change watch bands like a normal watch and is super light weight.
Battery life is pretty impressive. I've had it two weeks and charged it initially, and two times since. Both times after a fair amount of GPS activity. I haven't used the GPS a ton yet, when I have it seems to drain the battery but well worth it to have the data from the GPS.
NEEDS WORK
Syncing with the Garmin Connect App. Initially I had a really hard time getting this to connect. I use an android device; Sony Xperia Z. I admit I hadn't checked if this was a tested device but figured it was new enough that it should work. My phone was having a hard time with the Bluetooth technology and I was getting the "Unfortunately Bluetooth Share has stopped" error. The phone just would not pair with the watch. I did a factory reset and then the watch and phone paired easily. In the first couple of days I found the phone and watch wouldn't sync regularly... I solved this by re-pairing the device when that happened, (3 or 4 times) and now it seems to be working without fail. I've read how many people have struggled with this and I'm happy now that there doesn't seem to be an issue syncing. In today's age of technology syncing shouldn't be an issue. I do have to say that the Fitbit wasn't immune to these issues either though.
I do miss the Fitbit community. That was a really cool aspect of staying active, the competition aspect. It doesn't seem like the Garmin community is very active or as large, either that or it isn't as easy to locate "friends" to stay active.
HR tracking doesn't come internally with this watch. The only way to get that is with an external HR monitor strap. The fit bit would detect your hr and auto log some kind of activity and I thought that was cool, but sometimes it would miss. The fitbit would also log flights of stairs and this device doesn't seem to be able to do that unless your gps is turned on and then it measures elevation gain, etc.
Overall, I'm very happy with this. I understand I'm still a "new" customer and time will tell how well it holds up to the rigors of an active lifestyle.
Details:
Form factor:
Very thin especially compared to other brands and other garmin watches, also incredibly light. Also pretty comfortable to wear all day, especially since I don't usually enjoy wearing a watch all day and normally would take it off at work or when I get home. Very happy with this element.
Activity tracking:
Really love Garmin's design of this feature. Graphical view is really nice, and the red 'move bar' that fills up and gently nudges you to move by vibrating subtly when been sitting too long is great. It's not too annoying so you can ignore it easily, but also reminds you to not just sit still. I do wish it was a little bit easier to clear it. I live in a house with 3 different levels and when I walk around the house it doesn't clear until I go outside or something usually, I would think the house and stairs would count. I'm hoping Garmin can correct this later-- it's a minor quick really and not a big deal at all. Also, the calculation and automatic creation of your daily goal in steps is really great. I love that it looks for a pattern and increases / decreases your daily step goal as you are more/less active. It's more engaging and doesn't let you get as bored with just shooting for the same 10 or 15000 steps a day or something. It also doesn't jump too rapidly with one day of extreme activity or inactivity which is nice. Other brands should learn from Garmin on this. The Vivoactive does not have a wrist hear rate monitor, but to be honest those do not work very well on devices out there now, it's just not perfected yet to get accurate results without wearing super tightly, so I don't think it's a big deal not to have it here. It does connect with a chest strap however, as well as a foot pod if desired, etc.
Apps (running, cycling, swimming, golf, etc)
Work basically the same as other Garmin running GPS watches if you have had them. The GPS was incredibly quick, way faster than my older devices, probably about 10 seconds. This is a big plus if you are an athlete, as you can use this for training and not have to have a separate every day watch, running watch, and work watch. I've read the reviews of the Fitbit Surge and the GPS seems very weak and not accurate. This is Garmin's sweet spot so the tracking is really an A+. You can install or delete apps (and widgets, etc as well), through the app on your phone. It took be a bit to figure out how this worked, but once I did I was able to delete the golf app for example because I know I won't use that.
Battery life:
All smart watches struggle with this, it's really a technology limitation across all brands with batteries and getting them in a smart watch. However I will say Garmin did a great job with this, and although I didn't time it, it seems to last for several days at a time easy, even using GPS daily for runs and playing with it a little during the day while on my wrist. It's nice to not have to plug it in nightly.
Connect IQ
Garmin has a free app store where you can download widgets, new data fields, new watch faces, etc. This is really a nice feature and so far I've downloaded a few things, but it's a pretty limited selection so far. I would expect this to expand greatly in the future since this platform is brand new and the watches that use it from Garmin are really just being released now. I'm not expecting something anywhere near as big or nice as Apple's app store for the iWatch, but it should still be pretty good.
Notifications
I don't really use this feature all that much, but it works pretty much as I would expect. When phone calls come in and notifications it shows up almost immediately on the watch. You can't respond to the notifications, or answer calls not he watch obviously, but that's really an Apple thing not Garmin I believe. Speaking of which, I also learned that after speaking with Garmin customer service, notifications due have a limitation on Apple iOS devices. You can only choose all notifications from your phone, or only calls-- you can't customize say, text messages but not twitter. I believe you can do this on Android but just not iOS because of what Apple allows. You can customize which notification preference you choose different for during activities (e.g. running you only want calls) versus not during activities (e.g. you want everything) which is nice.
Screen
I do think the screen is just ok. Not a huge deal, but it could definitely be brighter and more crisp. It's a little harder to see in bright light and sometimes without the backlight on.
Other Misc Items and bugs
So there are definitely a few things I discovered that are small annoyances, but not big enough to matter that much. It's a first generation device from Garmin, so they are to be expected. For example, the default watch face from Garmin is actually really clean and nice looking, except they somehow left the battery % remaining off of it by accident. When I spoke to customer service, we researched it together, and they realized the mistake. I'm pretty sure that this along with any other small things will be updated through software updates that occur automatically through the phone Garmin Connect app. Garmin is usually really good about somewhat regular software updates. UPDATE: 4/15/15- Today Garmin released their 4th software update for the watch that fixes several bugs including the battery percentage mentioned above. It's great how they are coming out with fixes and updates so often.
Their customer service people were externally excited that I got the device and super helpful and nice on the phone, which was a really nice surprise. They even sent me free color bands just for being an early adopter and calling in. Like Amazon, this is a company I like working with for their great service.
- The one other thing I notices is that this device might have a little bit of a learning curve for people that have never had a smart watch, or like gadgets, or can just click around and figure stuff out. The menus are a little clunky and hard to figure out what option is where. For example what settings are in the System-->Settings menu, vs the System-->Bluetooth menu, vs what you need to configure on the app on your phone. The user manual leaves a lot to be desired and needs way more detail. The phone app also is a little hard to navigate and just not as polished as say something I would expect to see not he soon to be released apple iWatch, but we will see.
- Color bands look nice and really not very expensive at all (see Garmin's website). Ordered a couple but have not arrived yet.
- Touchscreen is really nice, responsive, and haven't had any complaints yet.
Hope this helps, let me know of any questions and I can add to this!

- You already have an ANT+ chest HRM (heartrate monitor), e.g. from a previous high end forerunner watch that died
- You want a running watch, not a all-day watch
- You want the cheapest one (I got it at 150$CAD)
- You do *not* want a wrist HRM
- You do *not* want to run with a phone (dead weight)
- Wants the battery last enough for 4 hours in 5 years (e.g. at 50% capacity).
Great:
- GPS syncs near-instant thanks to synchronization via BLE to the phone; I had to wait up to 3 minutes on my forerunner 305
- Automatic upload of the data as I arrive back home
- I had great apprehension for the touch screen while running, but it works fine, just a tap to switch displays, which is actually easier than with my previous forerunner 305
- Cradle is magnetic
- Easy to turn off
- Thin enough, no wrist HRM
- Works totally fine without a phone
Neutral:
- Display is trans-reflective so very readable in day light but unreadable inside.
Cons:
- Only 3 data fields per display, 3 displays. It could totally fit 6 numbers but they did a poor job.
- UX is generally poor but it works: for example setting alerts to every km will show "1Km" at every alert for a few seconds instead of showing the damn current distance (!?).
- The initial configuration is tedious, everything was set in imperial units. All defaults were bad.
- Need to use the Phone App to remove unnecessary Watch Apps (Golf, duh?)
- No graphs. The display is totally good enough to graph the HRM or speed but they don't just to upsell pricier ones. :/
- I think the GPS is less precise than the forerunner 305: when I use auto-stop it takes a 3~4 meters to wake up when I start running again. But it's still precise enough and better than a phone.
- No sound alert, only vibration
It's a much better buy than the Forerunner 25 when coupled with a waist HRM.
