The characters are few, and they mirror the reality of the special ops teams. Usually they're only 4 or 6, and they are stealthy and smart. The game begins with your character, "Rabbit", sitting in the passenger seat of a Toyota mech truck driving with your partner, Voodoo at the wheel. It's a dark night, and you four Delta boys are heading into the lion's den. You drive up and hit a checkpoint as you enter a city. It's just amazing how the creative team at EA did such a super job of making the animation sequences so cinematic. Unlike that gauwdy piece of junk, Call to Duty or whatever it is..... this game sets a new standard in putting the game player into warrior mode. The town is full of junk. No street lights, and you and your team are driving in to meet an undercover Afghan agent. Ah, but things go sour, quick. And then the "fun" begins.
I am a writer. And I work in the film community along with the world of theater. I'm not a kid. I know what makes a good story. I know what makes for good anticipatory excitement. Sometimes crawling on your belly in a compound of "bad guys" in the middle of the night can be more of a heart-pounding experience than just careening through a cartoon, like that gold plated mierda of Call of Duty...... yeah, well, don't go if called, okay?
There's pacing. There is a linear progression of the narrative, and to keep things exciting, nicely done scene changes, new missions that coordinate with other missions. The teams change, and in the end, we see the ultimate tragedy of war. Yet we see how the warriors themselves are truly selfless amazing men who risk their own lives to save just one man.
I am now playing and replaying sections of the thing, because I just can't find any other game that touches this one.
If you want a game that puts you in a cinematic setting, where you truly feel as though you are part of a team working to get missions accomplished, this is the game.
And they don't gloss over the conflicts between those "boots on the ground" and the generals in Tampa who only see the war through the soda-straw lens of a Predator drone high above. Mistakes are made by ill-informed generals, and men die before your eyes because of it. It angers you, and it motivates you to fight harder. You get caught up in the ethos and pathos that are genuine.
I know this war and this part of the world better than most. I've made it my business to read every dammmmmd thing I can get my hands on, and this game is boldly taking the side of those warriors we send out to do huge jobs with only a handful of men. And these dudes are just as they are in real life. Fearless. Wild-eyed. Long beards. Kick ass equipment that they control so well, that only a handful of them can eliminate a much larger enemy force. And I was stunned the other day as I was reading this book by this Delta commander, and when he recounted the words of a warlord who came to visit him with his little daughter in tow, the very words he spoke and were quoted in the book were used in this game in a very important moment. Heart-wrenching.
See, sometimes it's not just how many bullets and bombs and anonymous dudes popping up in a shooting gallery you mow down like paper ducks. Sometimes you get shivers down your spine in a quiet moment, out in the middle of nowhere, the Delta guys stand in the moon light with the lights of the dune buggies giving an eerie silhouette to everyone . An Afghan man is challenged by the Delta guys to say why he's on their side. They suspect him of betraying them. The tired, cold man, shivers in the light of the vehicles, in the far background are the mountains where the Taliban are ensconced. And the man says, pleading with the Delta men.... please, my daughter. I have a daughter. I want to grow up to be a person. I hate the Taliban. They ask him where the Taliban are. He points to the forbiding mountains and says, "Shah-i-Kot". This is the very place where in 2002, Delta and Seal teams took the very very high ground above that valley, and they swept Al Quada, the Taliban and Bin Laden out and on the run. Again, this game follows this whole exercise, Operation Anaconda, to the highest coldest peaks in the Hindu Kush.
I've misquoted him, but the very words that man speaks were spoken to the head man of Delta Force in Afghanistan. It's moments like this that make this game stand out as a work of drama and inter-active cinema.
I know not many agree with me. But kids, I'm sixty two years old. I've worked with Tennessee Williams and every actor and journeyman theater person around, and I know whereof I speak.
If you have a heart and and brain and some knowledge of the world..... get this game. If you are a young person who is not wise to the ways of the world, some of the subtlety may go over your head. But get the dammmmm thing anyway, and play it. And savor it. You don't have to be bouncing off walls and carrying cartoon avatars to have a fantastic experience.
Buy it.... buy it.... play it.

THANK YOU
