Pros:
* The design is nice. Simple black and silver. Components feel solid.
* The little coffee containers are pretty slick and work well. The mechanism to open the 'little plastic cup thingies' (LPCT) compartment seems strong, and slides easily without being sloppy. It feels good to open and close. The LPCTs fit well -- easy to insert and to remove.
* Heats up fast. The marketing blurb says 4 minutes, but it's a lot faster than that. And it's ready for cup #2 within a few seconds.
* There are lots of different LPCT manufacturers -- you won't be stuck buying coffee from Keurig. You can buy it from Green Mountain or Emeril or whomever else you want that floats your boat. And the LPCTs seem like they will have a long shelf life.
* The ability to make a 'large' or 'small' cup is very nice. Means you can share the same kind of LPCT with someone without fighting -- I like coffee a little less strong than my spouse. She uses the 'small' cup and is happy. I use the 'large' setting and I'm happy. We can both use the same 'Emeril Bold' (for instance) LPCTs.
* Makes other stuff than coffee -- tea, hot chocolate, you name it and you can probably find it out there.
* No waste. One cup = one LPCT. Simple. No need to discard a half pot of coffee at $10 a pound.
Cons (all nit-picks):
* It's bigger than I expected, with a fairly large footprint.
* Those blue lights on the top/front are very bright.
* You're gonna need another drawer in your kitchen or shelf in your pantry to hold all the LPCTs, especially if your spouse is anything like mine. I've had the Keurig for only a few days and I bet we've got five dozen LPCTs in as many flavors already!
* I didn't expect this thing to replace my drip coffee maker. And it doesn't -- at least not quite. A guy needs that pot-of-coffee thing in the morning. But for the mid-afternoon cup or for a quick hit of 'specialty' the Keurig is the go-to device.
Bottom line: Pretty darn good for the price. You can spend more, but unless you're trying to make coffee for 12 people all at once, I don't see why you should. Yes, it's another device for your over-crowded kitchen space. Something else to fool around with filling it with water and slopping on your counter. But this thing makes a darn good cup of coffee and a darn good cup of whatever else you can find in an LPCT. I like it, and so does my spouse. Two thumbs up!
Obviously, the price is higher per cup, but if you are obsessively drinking coffee, it isn't for you. It's of course definitely cheaper than a cup of coffee from a shop, but if you drink pots of coffee a day, or prefer to drink massive amounts at a time, then you might want to look elsewhere. The cup sizes are somewhat small (as in, they come in around an actual cup), which is perfect for me. I don't like to drink more than 8oz at a time.
But if you absolutely love convenience, it shouldn't matter either way, plus you can always get one of the reusable K-cups and brew your own beans still. My dad just purchased my mom a B40 too, and she won't stop raving about how it makes it so easy.
The variety of coffees and other drinks is fantastic. It takes some experimenting to find what you like, but when you find something good, it's really good. There is even a site out there to trade what you don't like in order to acquire something you would like. There are so many flavors that it's almost worth the cost per cup in that respect alone. One day I can have a cinnamon flavored coffee, the next day I can have a breakfast blend.
As I said before, I prefer tea above coffee, and I can use my Keurig to brew my teas that don't require boiling water, like greens and whites, by just running the machine with no cup and then steeping in my mug. It's perfect. While I might have to wait for water to cool to 175, it means I don't have to wait to boil water and I don't have to buy another gadget like a temperature variable kettle. Anything that requires water like hot chocolate and oatmeal is so much easier with the Keurig. The only thing you need to do is make run an empty cycle and toss that water first, just to make sure you don't get coffee taste in whatever it is you're making next.
Also be sure to use FILTERED water at all times in here. A filtering pitcher or system is worth its weight in gold, and you should use filtered water for all your brewed beverages anyway. I've yet to have the scale light turn on, nothing tastes off, and the machine runs well. I always fill it with water from my Brita.
Also something you might not think about when buying something is the company's customer service. Keurig is top notch. I had a question about the cups back around Labor Day, emailed on a Friday, and received a reply on Sunday with an apology for the wait. They are very good about replacing things, and any questions you have they are quick to answer, obviously.
Definitely do your research, and think about all the aspects of the machine before deciding if it's a good choice for you. I've had it for 4 months now, and I'm glad I got it.
