I don't often mention dedications when I do these reviews, but Shane Berryhill's dedication for Bad Mojo: A Zora Banks Novel is just so fitting for the book that follows, that I felt it was worth a quote. "To the people of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The good. The bad. And everyone In Between."

Imagine my delight when I found myself in a world filled with spooks of all types, vipers (vampires), werecreatures, hoodoo, zombies, and so much more. Plus, a subplot of a political hopeful with a dark secret. This is my kind of story.

Writer, Shane Berryhill, has an in-your-face style of writing that was well-suited for this particular tale. "...you can understand why the sight of a low-rent count and his bride standing outside my bar has my hackles up. Through the barred, Plexiglas door, it's obvious that the count is a Southern-fried Anne Rice reject--long and pale with the sharp, predatory features. The business end of his sandy mullet is greased to a quill-like perfection. The stringy party-in-the-back dangles unkempt over the up-turned collar of his dark brown duster. And where the hell did he find a lacey ruffle shirt in camo green?"

Ashley Owens (better call him Ash, unless you're family), isn't exactly normal himself. I believe he may be a werewolf, but it's all under control, thanks to some hoodoo from his partner Zora Banks. In Bad Mojo, Ash and Zora and their friends have to do battle a wide variety of spook and even pay a visit to the In Between.

Bad Mojo: A Zora Banks Novel turned out to be a lot of fun. There's plenty of room for a sequel, yet things are left pretty much resolved by book's end. Also, kudos to George C. Cotronis who did the cover art. Very nice indeed.

Bad Mojo: A Zora Banks Novel is available now at Amazon.com.

I know Shane Berryhill. He is an awesome cat and any time spent talking with him is the coolest moments you will have that day. But you dont have to know him personally to realize that what he has written here is a damned fine urban horror-fantasy novel. Now if you are from Chattanooga, as I am...as Shane is...then the novel will hold an extra hip factor as the story unfolds among recognizable landmarks such as the famous (or infamous depending on how much you had to drink) watering hole that no longer exists (except in the night time dreams of its faithful) The Stone Lion...and also The Terminal...the touristy North Shore...and sites in adjoining Marion County, such as the Catholic shrine and South Pittsburgh. But you dont have to be from here to dig this totally diggable book. The locales are memorable and move the action along perfectly. This story couldnt happen anywhere else.

In addition to the setting, Shane has really captured what makes a heroine click with readers here. Shane's heroine, Zora Banks is beautiful, tender, and totally badass enough to set you straight. She is a conjure woman, of mixed race, and I totally fell in love with her. She runs a book store and also finds time to be a single parent and battle arcane and evil forces in the 'Nooga. You cant help but feel a connection to her. I look forward to great things from this series.

The hero, Ashley Owens, is a tragic Shakespearian dude with none of the Shakespearian trappings, save a curse that looms over his head. Being in the horror hosting biz and a writer with a penchant for fangs and fur myself, I can personally tell you that you will be scared silly from this cat's handicap. He is a blue jean motorcycle hero straight out of an 80s or 90s horror flick that is hired to locate a state representative's missing wife. This takes him to some scary places and puts him at odds with some bad characters. I have never seen a guy get the hell beat out of him so much. He is like an updated Jim Rockford or Carl Kolchak with twice the pitfalls (women) and shortcomings. (his mouth). Ashley enters the Chattanooga underworld, with the promise of a good payday hanging over him. He visits places that do not exist in the daylight...and meets characters that populate this nocturnal cityscape that both hinder and help him along the way. Zombies, vampires, voodoo, conjure folks, trolls, and other assorted beasties and ghoulies will hit you right between the eyes.

Maybe you dont know Shane personally...but you can know him through his work...and Bad Mojo will kick your ass and leave you begging for more. Like a bad woman. Like a haunted curse. Like a shot of good bootleg. But dont take my word for it...buy this book and let it hit you where it hurts. You'll heal....but you wont forget...

I would have given a higher review of 4 stars if it weren't for the political viewpoint of the book. Shane, let me give you some advice....I don't want to hear about left or right wing politics. Keep that vague. If I know your political viewpoint and you show contempt for mine, I won't buy your books. Understand? Why do you want to alienate at least 50% of the public? I bought your book but I won't buy anymore if you insult me. Get it? This is an urban fantasy. I don't need to hear about your politics. I don't care about your politics.

Bad Mojo is everything a die-hard urban fantasy fan could want out of a compelling, page-turning story: a tortured but cool protagonist the reader can get on board with, a unique setting that offers elements of things we haven’t seen before a million times, good world-building and rules, and an exciting plot with conspiracies afoot at every turn. I hope there will be more books in the series so readers can enjoy more of Ash and Zora’s adventures.
