In 1965, James Schlatter, a chemist working for G.D. Searle, accidentally discovered the sweet taste of aspartame when he licked his finger, which had become contaminated with aspartame, to lift up a piece of paper. Schlatter had been trying to generate a tetrapeptide of the hormone, gastrin, for use in assessing the effectiveness of an anti-ulcer drug candidate when this wonderful accident happened.
Throughout most of the 1980s, Equal (aspartame) was pure white in color. However, beginning in the very late 1980s, G.D. Searle tried to cut costs by making Equal (aspartame) dull tan/yellow in color. About 3 years later, after numerous consumer complaints, G.D. Searle reversed its decision and made Equal (aspartame) pure white in color again, exactly as it is in this N'JOY brand product. Although the dull tan/yellow Equal (aspartame) was just as wonderfully delicious, it was psychologically less pleasing than the pure white Equal (aspartame).
In 2000, Merisant became the new owner of Equal (aspartame) and in 2009, Merisant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
THE 5 UNEXPECTED HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING ANY BRAND OF ASPARTAME:
(1)In scientific studies, eating Equal (aspartame) will block the cancer-causing effect of the deadly mycotoxin, ochratoxin A, which is always extremely high in liquorice and ginger; usually moderately high in breakfast cereals, nutmeg, paprika, red pepper, black pepper, turmeric, ginseng, coriander seed powder, many other spices, and raisins; and almost always present in very low quantities in coffee and tea. Unfortunately, aspartame will not block the cancer-causing effect of any other deadly mycotoxin, including all of the following:
aflatoxins, fumonisins, other ochratoxins, zearalenone, patulin, citrinin, viomellein, sterigmatocystin, A. fumigatus gliotoxin, cyclochlorotine, luteoskyrin and rugulosin, P. jirovecii, C. immitis and C. posadasii, B. dermatitidis, C. gattii VGIIc, phomopsins, tremorgens (penitrems and roquefortines), ergot alkaloids (clavines, ergopeptines, and lysergic acid amides), type A trichothecenes (T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, Stachybotrys satratoxins, and diacetoxyscirpenol), and type B trichothecenes (nivalenol, deoxynivalenol, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol).
Many other mycotoxins, including slaframine, moniliformin, ipomeanol, sporidesmin [facial eczema], and Neotyphodium fungal endosymbiont toxins, will only afflict plant-eating farm animals.
Eating Splenda (sucralose) will not block the cancer-causing effect of any mycotoxins.
(2)In scientific studies, eating Equal (aspartame) will help in the prevention and treatment of depression.
(3)In scientific studies, eating Equal (aspartame) will decrease our appetite. Other artificial sweeteners do not have this additional benefit.
(4)In scientific studies, eating Equal (aspartame) will help in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
(5)In scientific studies, eating Equal (aspartame) is friendlier to the good bacteria (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and Bacillus subtilis) than eating Splenda (sucralose), the other extremely safe and delicious artificial sweetener choice.
DISADVANTAGES OF ASPARTAME:
(1)Because N'JOY brand aspartame and Equal Classic brand aspartame both contain dextrose and maltodextrin, each packet contains about 4 calories, not "zero" calories as fraudulently claimed [but it's perfectly legal to lie in this situation].
3.5 cubes of natural cane sugar (sucrose), which are equivalent in weight to 2 teaspoons of natural cane sugar (sucrose), contain 32 calories and are equal in sweetness to one packet of Equal (aspartame) or one packet of Splenda (sucralose). In scientific studies, excessive amounts of natural cane sugar (sucrose) or natural fruit sugar (fructose) have been linked to diabetes, pancreatic cancer, heart disease, dental cavities, tooth enamel erosion, and gum disease (which potentially leads up to brain damage).
The 4 calories per packet from the dextrose and maltodextrin is a disadvantage for most of us but strangely enough, people who regularly consume packets of Equal (aspartame) or packets of Splenda (sucrose) each day will see an improvement in their dental tartar (calculus) problem, which usually is most severe behind a person's front lower teeth. The dextrose and maltodextrin become food for the mutans streptococci bacteria, which produce just the right amount of lactic acid to melt away the tartar without causing dental cavities. Both natural cane sugar (sucrose) and natural fruit sugar (fructose) would end up feeding the mutans streptococci bacteria too well, causing dental cavities, tooth enamel erosion, and gum disease.
(2)Equal (aspartame) will completely lose its sweetness if used during cooking [if it is boiled at 100° C for even a few seconds]. Splenda (sucralose) does not have this disadvantage. Therefore, even if Splenda (sucralose) is used during very prolonged cooking, it will not lose any of its sweetness. Equal (aspartame) will not lose any of its sweetness if applied to coffee or tea after the boiling hot water has already been poured into the cup or mug. However, pouring the boiling hot water on to the aspartame powder at the bottom of a cup or mug will reduce aspartame's sweetness by about half. We would still get the full health benefit from the phenylalanine and aspartic acid, even if the aspartame has lost its sweetness because we boiled it.
MINOR ADVANTAGES OF ASPARTAME:
(1)Compared against the price of Splenda (sucralose), Equal (aspartame) is about 25% cheaper per packet.
(2)Some people can taste the difference between the 5 most popular sweeteners, with Equal (aspartame) tasting the most delicious, natural fruit sugar (fructose) tasting the 2nd best, Splenda (sucralose) tasting the 3rd best, natural cane sugar (sucrose) tasting the 4th best, and Sweet'n Low (sodium saccharin), which has a slightly bitter aftertaste, tasting the worst of these 5 most popular sweeteners.
[Meanwhile, Sunett (acesulfame K) is a potassium salt with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Kraft Foods has patented the use of sodium ferulate to try to mask acesulfame K's unwanted aftertaste. No wonder soft drinks sweetened with acesulfame K don't sell as well as soft drinks sweetened with 100% NutraSweet (aspartame) or 100% Splenda (sucralose)].
[Meanwhile, the "natural" sweetener, stevia, tastes so terrible that most people might try stevia just once in their whole life and then never buy stevia again].
[Meanwhile, of the sugar alcohols, erythritol lacks sweetness compared to natural cane sugar (sucrose) and erythritol needs to be consumed in huge quantities to compensate for that lack of sweetness. Unfortunately, consuming large quantities (just 2 ounces) of erythritol will cause nausea (desire to vomit) and borborygmi (intestinal digestive growling noises) in most people. Also, erythritol is usually sold as a "crystalline powder," which has great difficulty dissolving in water, even after stirring very vigorously for 20 seconds. Also, erythritol causes a painful throat during the swallowing of a drink that has been made very delicious using a large quantity of erythritol. Also, VERY FREQUENTLY, people who buy erythritol will receive instead "by mistake" the cheaper but sweeter sweetener, xylitol, resulting in very severe, UNEXPECTED, 100% watery diarrhea. Unlike xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, and maltitol, genuine erythritol should not cause any diarrhea. Also, we know for certain that alcohol strongly causes esophageal cancer. We don't know for certain whether or not sugar alcohols might also cause esophageal cancer].
[Meanwhile, neotame, which is strongly endorsed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, is not available at a reasonable price, even at Amazon. Like aspartame, neotame is very delicious and has been shown to be completely harmless in humans. However, unlike aspartame, the phenylalanine in neotame does not ever become available to the human body. Therefore, phenylketonurics can use neotame to sweeten their drinks but not aspartame].
SAFETY OF ASPARTAME:
According to Wikipedia: "The safety of aspartame has been the subject of several political and medical controversies, U.S. congressional hearings, and internet hoaxes since its initial approval for use in food products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1981. The European Food Safety Authority concluded in its 2013 re-evaluation that aspartame and its breakdown products are safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure, corroborating other medical reviews. However, because its breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the [extremely rare] genetic condition, phenylketonuria."
Also according to Wikipedia: "Citing data from a Japanese study that had not been available...FDA commissioner Hayes approved aspartame for use in dry goods [in 1981]. In 1983, the FDA further approved aspartame for use in carbonated beverages and [in 1993], for use in other beverages, baked goods, and confections. In 1996, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame, allowing it to be used in all foods."
Also according to Wikipedia: "Several European Union countries approved aspartame in the 1980s, with EU-wide approval in 1994. The European Commission Scientific Committee on Food reviewed subsequent safety studies and reaffirmed the approval in 2002. The European Food Safety Authority reported in 2006 that the previously established Acceptable Daily Intake was appropriate, after reviewing yet another set of studies."
I had seen a few reviews and have to say that I had no powder coming out, no torn packages, no torn packets. I was more mindful of my 2nd box as I was disbelieving I'd used 400 in less than a month. I use it on Rice Krispies, in Kool-Aid and make lemonade with Real Lemon juice, smoothies plus other things. The second box DID feel more full AND lasted longer. I am on my 3rd box.
Apologies for the flash glare. I wanted to show it can stay as is, open the bottom flap and opens to a convenient server for a break room, accommodates a large family, even a hotel's "continental breakfast."
I declare I'm so deeply parched. I reckon a nice tall glass of ice cold, pink lemonade sounds veryredreshing
