Background: My cat almost took out my pug’s eye last week while playing. Cat thinks it’s a dog. My vet recommended these to me for Ham’s sake.Keep in mind my cat (Momo) is an exclusively indoor only cat. Its only been a few days and both my leather couches and Ham appreciate the benefits of these claws. They don’t seem to bother my cat at all. He’s still walking and jumping normally but is no longer damaging things he swats at. I purchased medium and Momo is about a year old and isn’t yet an “adult”. I wouldn’t suggest putting these on an outdoor cat as they wont be able to defend themselves as good if needed. Conclusion: They’re $11. Just buy them. You likely paid anywhere from $200 to $2000 for your furniture and another animals’ eyesight is priceless unless you’re counting the vet bill (which I am: $250)

Others have already stated much of what I have to say, so I'll just leave a few tips based on my first experience putting these on. (Note: I have two 9-month-old kittens, one around 8 pounds, the other around 9.5 pounds. The medium size fits both of them well.)

1. Before I bought these caps, I was afraid they would prevent the claws from retracting. What I discovered with research (but didn't fully believe until I saw it for myself) is that nearly all of a retracted claw still sits outside the end of the toe -- it's just covered with fur, so it seems like the claw has been completely withdrawn. The edge of a properly fitted cap rests an eyelash above the surface of the skin when the claw is retracted.

2. For the first minute after the caps were put on, the smaller kitten completely ignored them and walked around as if nothing had changed. The larger kitten shook his paws a good bit and began biting at the caps, so my husband had to monitor him.

3. Once all the front caps were installed, I distracted them with a laser pointer while the glue set. I let them go after it on a linoleum floor, where they wouldn't get snagged (if anything, they were pushing the caps the direction the needed to go). The monsters attacked with their usual gusto, and it helped desensitize them to their new caps.

4. I put the very first cap on a little crooked, and the kitten later got its teeth behind the edge of the cap and worked it most of the way off. The glue is stronger than I would have believed, though, because she got it only about halfway off before falling asleep. I removed it with nail scissors.

5. If you have someone else hold the cat, you stand a better chance of extending the claw completely and thus getting the cap on without gluing any fur.

6. Filling the cap to the rim with glue is overkill -- you'll just get glue on your fingers when the nail pushes out the excess. A test that seemed to get us to a happy medium: Put in a bit of glue, then squeeze the flat sides of the cap together. If no glue rises to the surface, you don't have enough in there. If a little drop can be squeezed up without falling out, it's about right. If it's overflowing, drip the excess onto a paper towel.

7. If the nail sticks to your finger as you're installing it, de-stick yourself in the direction you want the cap to go. If you try to pull your finger the other way, it'll just take the cap with it.

8. If you do glue a little fur and the cat finds it uncomfortable, manicure scissors may help you safely cut the fur loose -- just be careful not to stab or nip the toe!

9. I removed the fine tip and blew into the large end to try to clear the glue before it dried. Then I nipped of a wee bit of the tip and tested to see if the air could flow through. Don't know whether I can reuse this tip later, but I figured I might as well give it a shot.

Good luck!

***UPDATE: After several days, the caps are still in place and the kittens are comfortable with them. I worried that I was taking away their ability to stretch (in the way that declawed cats can no longer latch on to a surface and stretch backward), but they can still grab hold of the berber carpet and get a good pull. The plastic caps do make a faint tapping noise when the kittens walk on the hard floor, but it isn't loud enough to bother us; however, if you're super-sensitive to noises like that, you might want to try another option.

TL:DNR version: they work well, but not quite as advertised.

For the most part, this product seems to be very effective. I do have a few reservations and it really deserves a 3.5 star rating.

First, my cat is an active and pretty well built domestic shorthair. His name is James Tiberius Kat. His favorite food is, apparently, rubber bands.

I initially purchased Soft Claws because he would routinely get really wound up by my presence in the morning and immediately before bedtime and would scratch the ever loving crap out of me. After he jumped and latched onto my thigh one too many times, and not interested in surgical deformation, I went for the rubber nails. He is very cuddly and by no means is he a "cat from hell". He just plays a bit rough sometimes.

He hates them. Absolutely hates them. Think of wearing a pair of Mechanix gloves 24/7. I'm sure it sucks. I know it sucks because I've had to wear nomex shooting gloves for days on end in 120+ degree heat, and I wasn't getting belly rubs for my trouble. If there's one thing he hates more than wearing them, it's when I put them on. Few things are quite so pathetic as a cat whose will has been visibly broken and is just sitting there taking it.

Next, they don't last nearly as long as they should. He chews them off at a rate of about three to five a week. And by chew...well, when I clean the litter box I always find a few of them. Others are sitting at the base of his scratching post. While the manufacturer promises 4-6 weeks, he will get all of them off in three. I sit down once a week and replace the ones he has eaten. I think that is partly due to the fact that perhaps I have not quite pinned down the exact combination of nail trim/cap trim/glue volume to get them to stay on longer, so I can't put all the fault on the product...but still.

I also noticed some reviews on here that expressed some modicum of alarm at the sight of what appeared to be an entire cat claw that had sloughed off inside of a Soft Claw cap. I have found a few of these as well, but when I inspect Tiberius's little cat hands, he does not have any bloody nubs. Nope. Just razor sharp talons where beautifully supple Soft Claws used to be. I usually notice this when he sinks them into my body.

Is it a hassle? Yep. Does it work as well as advertised? Nope. Is it better than having my little kitter guy destroy my leather couches and draw my blood on a daily basis? You BET it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stops my cat from hurting herself
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2021
When Bonnie gets itchy she scratches her face with her sharp back claws and in the past we've tried all sorts of collars and bandages to protect the wounds, often taking many weeks to heal.

The soft claws mean that she can scratch without doing any serious damage and have greatly improved rates of healing.

She doesn't like them, and they might not be suitable for a cat that is less nervy than she is and more likely to need claws to protect them outside, but seeing as Bonnie only goes into our garden and runs away from danger, they are fine for her.

She does seem to get used to them, and they have definitely improved her quality of life.

Haven't had them on my cat long enough to see how long they last, but so far so good. Application was easy, and besides when I was actually putting them on my cat I can see no discomfort. You should have 2 people doing it tho, if not it will be tricky. Medium worked great for my kitten. I should add my kitten is NOT a calm dude, he was scratching and having a fit the whole time. And I still found the application easy. You just need to wrap them in a towel and have whoever is holding onto them/pushing the nail out be willing to man handle them a bit. I'm very happy!
