The focus is on answering common questions about sex, bodies, and etc. that teenagers (and adults!) often have. It manages to do this clearly and in interesting ways without coming across as disrespectful or creepy. The chapter about teens girls discussing masturbation could've gone very wrong, for example, but it was realistic and tasteful.
It's also refreshing to come across "sex ed" type content where queer folks are at the forefront rather than a footnote, very special episode, or conspicuous abscene. One of our lead girls is a lesbian (and her girlfriend is a supporting character) and another lead girl could be interpreted as aromantic and asexual, although nothing definite has been said yet. It seems likely that the sex ed teacher is queer as well and possibly also the school nurse. The third lead girl is a BL fan, and I'm curious to see whether the manga ever tackles sexual fantasies that mainstream society might deem weird (like a presumably straight girl being interested in male/male romance and smut.)
On the whole, I liked this way more than I initially thought I would. Don't expect it to have any deep story or character building because the education is definitely the focus. But it is light-hearted and you'll likely learn something, even if only random animal genital facts.
As a side note, I wonder whether this really merits the "explicit content" warning label on the cover. There wasn't anything in here that you wouldn't find in a robust and modern high school health book. There is one extremely brief and non-explicit scene of oral sex, but that is it in terms of on-page sex acts or nudity. Personally, I would feel comfortable handing this to 14 year-old, but perhaps opinions differ.
The story and characters are just well enough developed to ease you through each chapter's sex education lesson, and while the lessons are not particularly thorough or lengthy they are surprisingly informative and up to date. I'd quibble with a few points the author makes, but overall I think this manga addresses a wide range of important sex education issues better than nearly any high school text book I've seen (but I'm American, so...). In fact, I learned two things I absolutely did not know!
Most importantly, the manga (and the lead character, a Sex Ed teacher) presents all of this information is a positive and enthusiastic way. The manga is body positive, sex positive and LGBTQ positive. This isn't a gag manga with a few sex facts. Its a well researched educational manga about sex with plenty of fun gags!
As a former teacher of students aged 13-18 I'd highly recommend this for anyone, but especially for young people (with their parents approval) who might be getting very poor sex education from their school.
Beyond the comedy, it embraces the actual educational aspect of sexual health and makes it entertaining to read. There are four main characters each with a different personality traits. One likes boys-love, two are lesbians, and one loves her cat.
It’s a great read if you like lighthearted comedy and also a societal criticism. I found myself laughing at a bunch of the scenes taking places. Especially when the teacher gets questioned by the nurse, without going into any detail.
Pick this up!
