Completing Sleeping Bear Press's acclaimed Discover America State by State series is A is for Aloha: AHawaii Alphabet. The landscape of Hawaii is as exotic as its history and people. Author U'ilani Goldsberry was born on the island of Maui, in the small town of Pu'unene. She now lives in La'ie on the northeastern coast of O'ahu. She has written a variety of books including three Auntie U'i books. Illustrator Tammy Yee grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. She currently lives in Windward O'ahu.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"(Sleeping Bear's) niche is alphabet books that not only teach letters, but facts, culture and history about each of the 50 states. Their Hawaii effort draws on the talents of master storyteller Goldsberry and fantastic illustrator Yee and is a gold mine of cleverly presented data about the 50th state. Each letter also uses the mnemonic of a sing-song couplet poem to remember the lesson. Clever package, well-presented."
~Burl Burlingame, Honolulu Star Bulletin

Great book, kids would love it, fast shipping

Love it! The images are colorful. There's culture and connections to Hawai'i. It's definitely the English alphabet not the Hawaiian one.

There is a lot of very interesting facts about Hawai'i. I learnt a lot from this picture book: that it was a kingdom, that's its on the largest mountain range in the world, that 1/3 of world pineapples come from Hawai'i and much more. The illustrations were beautiful, too. I was happy to learn that both the author and the illustrator are native Hawaiians.

My son is still a little too young to appreciate all the info packed into this book. But I think it has been a great addition to our personal library. Colorful illustrations and all kinds of facts!

Bought this book to be given from my children to their grandparents who live in Hawaii. Illustrations are BEAUTIFUL! Also love that it can be read different ways - each letter has both a short rhyme as well as a longer informational section. My kids loved hearing the book read with the rhymes for each letter, "A is for..." The grandparents loved (in addition to reading the book to their grandkids) learning new and interesting facts about their state and commented often, "I didn't know that!"
Overall very pleased with this book and this series in general!

I bought this book for my grandchildren who were moving to Hawaii with the Navy. Although too old for them at the time, it served as a wonderful introduction to HI for my other two grandchildren who went the next summer to visit their aunt and family. I have just given it to my niece's children to help them plan for a trip to visit their cousins in the next year. The varying levels of information contained in this book make it one that can grow with the children.
