I thought four 10GbE ports wouldn't be enough. But the built-in 8 1 GbE ports are just what I needed, since I have only a few devices needing > 1 GbE and a decidedly non Gigabit internet connection (10/0.8).
Had a rough start due to not realizing I had two DHCP servers active and, of course, the switch leased an IP from the one I wasn't expecting. Once I got that sorted with the help of the Qfinder Pro app, I was able to log in, set an IP on the network I wanted and I was all set.
Has linked fine with all flavors of devices 1/2.5/5 and 10, including a 2.5 Gbps port that wouldn't link with a NETGEAR XS508M. I appreciate the managed features, if not for just the ability to see what's happening when devices won't link and the ability to force the connection rate. The key missing feature is the ability to mirror ports for packet capture.
Seems like QNAP has a product with the right price and right features.
If you're looking for an inexpensive, quiet and easy to setup and work with 10g switch, this is it. I've owned or installed and managed at client locations a few other 10G switches such as a Cisco 4948E, Both the Mikrotik 10G switches, Netgear GS110EMX and a few Ubiquiti US-16-XG's and an 8 XG and for simplicity, this QNAP is about the best.
I've got 4 different 10g SFP+ fiber modules and 2 different branded 10g Ethernet modules and all of them work perfectly as well as several different branded DAC cables.
Nothing is different compared to any other of the plug and play switches but the web UI of this switch is intuitive and straight forward and supports all the layer 2 functions you would expect and need for a home/lab or small business.

No POE at this price point obviously so if you need that, an injector is your best bet unless you go with the Ubiquiti XG's which have POE on all ports.
If I had to ding it for anything, I would say that lack of a rack mount bracket is a bummer for the home lab guys wanting to mount this in a rack. The other, possibly more important omission, is lack of 2.5 or 5 gig capability on those SFP+ ports. The QSW-M408-2C has that on it's RJ45 10G ports as well as their other switches with built in RJ45 10G ports so if you are using 2.5 or 5g adapters, get one of those instead. They aren't much more expensive.. you'd end up spending more for RJ45 10G adapters anyways.
Bandwidth of the switch is good as well. Using it normal, you get just under 100 gb/s of backplane capacity and about half that in terms of non blocking throughput if you want to use those 4 10 gig ports as iSCSI interfaces.
When I received the QNAP switch, I hooked it up to my old 1Gb Netgear managed switch and accessed its web interface. That was easy because the QNAP switch is set up by default with DHCP turned on. From there, I set a new password, configured a static IP address, set up link aggregation (LAG) on 2 ports with LACP turned on, switched my Mac Pro (2019) from 1Gb RJ45 to 10Gb using a Sonnet 10GbE SFP+ card, and checked the firmware, which was up-to-date. Next, I shut it down, unplugged the Netgear switch, and replaced it with the QNAP switch by switching over all the cables. I turned on the QNAP and voilà, everything worked. It was that simple and took less than 5 minutes.
From there, I continued to configure a few more settings, such as IGMP, RSTP, QoS, and a media-streaming VLAN. All very easy thanks to the built-in setting guide on the right of the screen.
The switch has now been on for 48 hours with almost all ports occupied and without a single lost packet.
Is this the most feature-rich switch there is? No. IS it the cheapest? No. But is it the easiest to set up and use for the vast majority of consumers who are looking for 10GbE throughput and lots of ports? Absolutely. Out-of-the-box, it will do all that in an unmanaged way. But the management UI is trivial for most and offers easy ways to set up the vast majority of features one needs in a home office or small business setting.
I'm a big fan and highly recommend the QNAP QSW-M408-4C.
At the very least I would like to have seen HTTPS support for the web interface, and the telnet ports should be password protected.
I would only recommend this switch for home usage or very basic office setups.
[Edit 2021/06/20]
- With the latest firmware the now enabled HTTPS encryption. It's also likely that they have removed the un-authenticated telnet ports, but I haven't verified this yet.

Verbunden mit 1 PC und 2 10Gb-NAS.
