You'll also be happier if you remember it's not a tablet. I have my older gen ipad for that, don't want this to be a tablet. Tablets should be tablets, readers should be readers. Tablets don't last long on batteries, and they are great with PDF documents, and so on — but book e-readers let you shut down the email, social media and other distractions and sink into a good book. I love that 32GB has enough room for thousands of books, audio books and some PDFs. It's all I need.
Wish list? Next gen, make it 8", longer battery life, even snappier on page turns if possible (each gen of e-ink seems snappier). Keep those buttons, they're lovely, but you could drop the "click." I don't like the sponge-like buttons on Forma, but I like their silence when reading. Nits aside, it's a spectacular device, great to haul with you anywhere, small enough for your bag, hand, to carry all day, waterproof. Don't need speakers, bluetooth or colour. Is it worth it? Yes, if you're a big reader — say 1.5 hours a day or longer, where eye fatigue and distractions are factors. No, if you're a light bathroom reader (i.e. short sessions), stick with the tablet, or the cheapest kindle.
Last December (2020), I felt I wanted to try one of the newer versions with a backlight, as my eyes are ageing. I chose the Oasis, despite it being the costliest of the Amazon line of readers. I have not regretted my purchase. It did take me a few weeks to acclimate myself to the new milieu, but that’s because I’m lazy and never read the manuals…
The Oasis is a superior reading device. Extremely well made, it has the look & feel of a quality instrument. The screen is large & very well lit with adjustable levels of intensity & warmth. Side buttons, as well as a touch screen, permit easy access to all the software features you could want during a reading session. I love the dictionaries & access to Wikipedia, as I read a lot of science & history.
Now, after several months of use, I simply love it & use it daily for hours at a time. You can’t go wrong with the Oasis, & Amazon has the largest selection of e-books I’m aware of, in both English & French. One negative aspect, however, is that Canadian libraries have not yet signed an agreement with Amazon, so one cannot borrow their e-books with this device. That’s a shame, but maybe it will change in the future.
I do also recommend getting a cover to protect this fine reader. I chose a simple one ($20) with a flip-up front that doubles as a book stand when folded back on a table or a knee. Useful & very protective for an instrument that can last for decades.
First, regarding the leather cover; it works well. There are those that complain that is scratches easily (it does). But, those scratches can be considered character lines that give it character. Like an old friend, who shows its age. Unless you are OCD, it will not bother you. There have been reviews that have suggested it does not last long term and of course I cannot comment on that having only had it for a week or two. It definitely makes it easier to grip, which with my slightly arthritic hands is a requirement.
Regard the Oasis itself; I was reluctant to give up books, being a little old-school (maybe a Luddite, but not technological ignorant - sort of like giving up vinyl records for CDs). But, having made the leap, there is no looking back. The reading experience is greatly improved and for the sake of that I am reading more. For starters, I am able to adjust the font size, which for someone at my age, now allows me to read without glasses; that is a bonus. For night time reading, at least on the Oasis, being able to adjust the warmth of the back-light really takes the strain off the eyes.
The ability to select books (albeit - limited to the Amazon ecosystem) and download them in mere minutes is another bonus. As much as I liked going to the bookstore, the convenience (let alone the cost differential) is just something that cannot be understated.
Again, as this is my first e-reader, I cannot compare it to similar products. I bought it because of the back-lighting and size. My wife reads off an ipad (and it works), but it is heavier and not as easy on the eyes.
I would recommend the Oasis, if money is not an issue. I am sure the Paperwhite works just as well, for those needing to be a bit more frugal.
