Well, let me tell you folks, if this is the best there is in the game camera segment, we need to burn it all down and stop using these things until they give us something better.
Where to begin? Well, the actual package is great - it's a relatively small, waterproofish, easily secured camera box that runs off batteries for weeks. Cool. Unfortunately, that's about all there is to love.
First off, this thing is triggered by grass waving in the wind; no, I am not exaggerating, yes, I did turn the sensitivity down. We had a slightly windy day (10mph) and the camera spent the entire morning, evening, and night recording 1 video every few minutes of nothing but wind, rain, and grass waving. Until the SD card was full.
When it did fail to burn itself out on wind and actually caught animals, that was pretty neat. Among other things I have confirmed the existence of the bobcat that has become an urban legend among a few different apartment complexes here. Too bad that my video of it, like all my videos shot with this thing, is blurry, grainy, soft, and hard to interpret. It has the number of pixels required, strictly speaking, to be termed 1080p, but it looks from a visual fidelity standpoint more like it was shot on Kodachrome 8mm, printed onto transparency, mailed through a rainstorm, scanned back in, and then compressed in Divx with quality 5. And no, I am not talking about the nighttime IR video only - that I'll give some leeway to, but the color video is also this inexcusably bad. My iPhone 3G took better video, and for those of you following along at home, no, the 3G did not have a video feature, I had to use some janky jailbreak app and it was STILL better.
All of this garbage, though, all of it I could forgive, albeit with grumblings about how my Contour +2 action camera in a waterproof case hooked to a car battery would have made a better rig, if not for the INDESCRIBABLY TERRIBLE experience of trying to edit clips from this thing together in Sony Vegas. You see, this camera outputs H264 AVC video in an AVI container. Fine as it goes. But then it muxes the audio in as AAC. Which is NOT spec compliant at all; if you wanted to use that combination of codecs you should be using either an Mp4 or preferably MOV file. But NOOOOO, that was too much for Bushnell to manage (or pay for licensing of, perhaps?)
So you take the videos off your camera and you check them in VLC. They play, of course, because VLC plays everything, being a consumer level piece of software designed for maximal compatibility in the faraway land of France, where they could not care less about this strange concept of "software patents". But then you load them into Vegas, and being an ostensibly professional video editing suite, it expects some level of adherence to an open standard in order that it may guarantee the quality of its results. It doesn't read the audio in these clips at all - it's like it thinks there isn't an audio track at all, because, again, the audio is AAC instead of Mp3 or something reasonable.
So you run 100 individual clips through Avidemux to convert them to MP3 audio after writing a batch script to do that, because you're me and you are not a helpless plebeian who panics and reaches for the Pinot Grigio when a computer doesn't do the right thing and because that is easier than remuxing to MOV. And you load them into Vegas and they don't freaking play, so you spend several hours trying to fix AVC support in your copy of Vegas on your computer and accidentally screw up AVI support entirely, and then you figure that out and unscrew it, and now you have finally got these videos loading into Vegas with both video and audio, but it's 3 AM and you've got work in 6 hours and you don't have time to reach for the rum.
So the next day, you come back and you start to edit these clips, and you get it all into a configuration you like, and put some finishing touches on, and Vegas just starts refusing to play certain of the clips. And every time you remove one it seems like a new one breaks. Oh, and you've noticed that the first few seconds of each clip are often really strange, like there are frames in the wrong order or god knows what. And now even if you delete and re-add these clips, Vegas won't play them, and you're yelling at your screen and the dog is hiding behind your friend because he thinks you're mad at him, and your project is due tomorrow and now, now it is definitely time for the rum, and for bsing together a replacement project using saved up clips from your Contour, which works every single time and never creates incompatible videos.
Don't buy this camera for video. Don't buy any game camera if you want video. Buy an old Gopro and a huge IR spotlight and hook them up to a car battery all night in timelapse mode. Because at least then you will be able to USE what you get.
E2 Image quality is better for both video and stills at all distances, day or night, in spite of what the specs suggest.
The Aggressor's advertised 1 second interval for still photos doesn't work with the 14mp setting. But no big deal because 14mp images aren't much better than 8mp. And the advertised .2 second trigger speed is more like 2.0 seconds. Also the Aggressor images are often too dark or too bright, unlike the E2 Essential, which makes me wonder if I just got a defective one.
The Aggressor night-time motion sensor does work at longer distances than the cheaper version.
We've been enjoying photos and videos of our backyard foxes and other critters at 5' to 30' distances.
