High Land Hard Rain 各輸入盤のレビューが混在していますので、
ここに書き加えました。
2014年、Domino というレーベル（オレンジジュース各盤をリイシューしている）
が、30年記念盤として出したこの２CDセットには、更にお宝満載です！！
CD1はオリジナルアルバムで、CD2がボートラ集となっています。

1.と5.は、超貴重かと思います。
聞き比べると、
13.は、アルバムバージョンとの違いがよく分かりませんでした。
14.15.16.は、2012 Edsel レーベル盤収録のものと同じでした。
ところがです。15. Oblivious (Colin Fairley remix) の
問題の音飛びが改善されているではありませんか！！
ファンとしては、とても嬉しい限りです！！
もちろん新たにリマスターされ、低音域が広い感じです。
30年記念盤、皆さん安心して購入してくださいね。

８０年代ネオアコを象徴する大名盤！！
ボートラ付きでリイシューされ、大喜びで手に入れました。ボクも…。
何度か聞き流しましたが、問題の音飛びには気づかずでした。
レビューを見て、注意深く聴き直すと、確かに…です。
まぁ、ボートラ２曲のOblivious extended は、
それほどいいアレンジではないのと、
Walk Out To Winter [12 extended version] は、
他の１２インチコンピで入手可能なので、言うほどのガックリ感はないですね。
また、既発のこのアルバムＣＤもそんなに音質・音圧悪くはないので尚更です。
今回のリイシュー、充実したブックレットが素晴らしいです。
これから購入の方は、ブックレット目的だけでも価値あると思います。
これまでも、バグのあったＣＤが手直しされた例がいくつかありますが、
果たして今回はどうでしょう？
本編のバグならともかく、ボートラですからね〜。
でんpark さんがご指摘の前科もあるみたいですし…。

過去の全否定という過激なイデオロギーを自らの音楽性の中枢に据えてシーンを席巻したパンク／ニューウェーヴのムーヴメント。
しかしながら、‘79年末、クラッシュが『LONDON CALLING』を発表した頃から状況は変わり始め、この動きはより間口の広い、音楽的により成熟したものへと進展していくこととなる。
僕個人的な考えだと、そういったシーンの中心にいたのは、完全にザ・ジャムでありポール・ウェラーであったと思っている。
ジャズ、ソウル、R&B、C&Wなど、よりプリミティヴなアメリカンポップスを大胆に取り込んだ彼らの作品は、当時の英国において爆発的な支持を獲得し、数多くのフォロワーを生み出した。
ロディ・フレイム率いるアズテック・カメラも、そういった脈絡の中で誕生したユニットであったとは、今でも僕はそう思っている。
彼らの音楽を称して「ネオ・アコースティック」などと、我が国においては呼ばれていたわけだが、確かに、このデビュー盤におけるアプローチの仕方というのはそういった方向性を目指したものであり、アコギの占める役割と言うのを非常に意識した作りとなっている。特にロディのギタープレイには特筆すべきものがあると思う。
しかしながら、本作が有する最も重要な意義とは、やはり、英国におけるポップミュージックのあり方について、所謂オールドウェーヴのアーチスト達とは異なる感性を持つ若い人たちによって、再構築が図られているという点にあるということだと思う。
もちろん、冒頭で述べたように、彼らがこれを行った先駆的なアーチストであるというわけではないし、他にもこういった音的アティテュードを保持するアーチストは数多存在した。
が、彼らの場合、安易にコマーシャルなポップ路線に傾斜することなく、ロックグル―プとしてのソリッド＆エッジィなストイックさを担保しつつ、ここまで完成度の高いものを作り上げたのである。
このことが、極めて素晴らしいのだ。
そしてこのフォーマットというのは、今でもシーンに根強く浸透し、英国以外においても、多くのミュージシャン達に影響を与えていると思う（例えば、ヴァンパイア・ウィ−クエンドやドラムス、ラ・ラ・ライオットなど）。
「ネオ・アコ」というと、なんだか彼らの音楽性の一面しか表現していないようで、個人的にはあまりピンとこないのだが、そいったジャンル分けを超越した「ポップの真髄」というものが、この中には確実に存在していると思う。
80年代の英国シーンを語る上で、絶対に外せない名盤だ。

ネオアコ/ギター・ポップ・ブー ムの中心的存在=Aztec Cameraの1983年発表、であり名盤「High Land, Hard Rain」が30周年記念盤となり再発。本作はオリジナル収録曲に加え、シングル曲/ライヴ/セッション/リミックスなどをボーナス・トラック(ボーナス・ディスク)として追加。今回は貴重な音源が満載だが、中でも超貴重な"Kid Jensen Session"を収録とファンにとっては何が何でも欲しい代物。またロディ・フレイムの才能が炸裂したネオの大名曲M'@を収録し、ムーヴメントの全てがこの1枚にある。この名盤を新たに聴く方にはこちらをおすすめするし、往年のファンは迷わず買うべし。

アズテックカメラ、83年の1st。主幹のロディはまだ19歳のときの作品。

今これを聴くと、例えばオレンジ・ジュースの1stなんかと比べて、ものすごく音がまろやかでちょっぴり恥ずかしくなるくらい甘い音だ。全くロディ・フレイムという人は最初から実に曲作りがうまい。エルヴィス・コステロがいきなり認めたというのも頷ける。演奏が、曲にちょっと追いついていないのだが、それすらも魅力にしてしまうくらいの若いエネルギー。そして、それに反比例するかのようなメロディの流麗さや文学的なアンチ・パンクを提示する歌詞とのアンバランス。それこそがネオアコの魅力の大きな要素だろう。
この風変わりなポップな抽象画のジャケットを見るだけで、なんとも言えない青春を感じ取ってしまう。初恋もしくはファーストキスは一度だけという甘酸っぱい想いは、だからこそ誰にでも切ない気持ちとして共通する。逆にまだ青春まっただ中の若い人には、こういう音楽を聴いて、希望を持ってもらえたらなと思う。

私見だが、ロディ・フレイムは最後までここを越えられなかったと思う。早熟の天才の見本といっても良い。神々しく登場し、全てを詰め込んで全ての人を魅了する。
ここには音楽で生きていこうだとか、２作目以降の配慮だとか、そういう先を考えたものがほとんどない気がする。だから素晴らしい。その時点での自分を、一瞬を全て遠慮なくつぎ込んだ。そんな感じ。
天才がそんな事をすれば当然駄曲はない。
曲が良いからアレンジは簡単で良く、疾走感と統一感があり、またその単純なアレンジが曲を際立たせている。完璧なバランスといって良いだろう。
青春とは一瞬を永遠にする事である。ロディ･フレイムは自らの一瞬を余りにも鮮やかに切り取ることで、我々に永遠をもたらした。

（などと気取って書いているが、今もって頭のなかで簡単に曲を響かせることができるし、それで胸が掻きむしられてしまうのだ。そのくらい刻み込まれているという事。
若いときにこれに出会えて、自分は本当に幸せだったと、つくづくそう思う。）

パッケージが絵本みたいになってて豪華です! 音もかなりクリアになって今まで聞こえなかった楽器の音がはっきり聞こえてきます。ボートラ曲の音飛びは確かにありますが大していいボートラじゃないので気になりません。 内容の方は83年の作品ですが全く古臭さを感じさせないアコギと少年のようなロビーの声、どこか切なさや悲しみを感じさせる曲で構成された傑作です。

I had always been a fan, but mostly of the later material. This debut album is amazing, and it really holds up. It is an excellent jangle pop record, and the bonus disc is worth the investment. While not every album deserves a bonus/ anniversary treatment, this album does.

Sorpresissima. Negli anni 80 non li avevo notati: da poco ho sentito un brano alla radio (Oblivious) e mi hanno subito preso. Tutto il cd è molto piacevole e mai banale. Non riesco a capire come possano essermi sfuggiti in passato. Sono subito andato a cercare il resto della discografia. Una piacevole scoperta degli 80's in ritardo di circa 35 anni.

I was born in 1975 and Aztec Camera's High Land, Hard Rain was released in 1983 so I can't claim that this album had a huge impact on my life at that point in time. In fact, the first time I believe I was aware of their existence was a few years later, when Somewhere In My Heart was released and, without knowing who it was or ever finding out, I simply loved the song. It was many years later, in 1999, when the Aztec Camera “Best Of” was released, did I hear Somewhere In My Heart again and a hundred fireworks exploded in my head as I heard the song I'd loved so much as a kid. I was a bit cash strapped at the time, so my wife (at the time) bought me the Aztec Camera best of as a Christmas present and I was well and truly introduced to the music of Roddy Frame. In fact, I was so blown away by this sixteen track collection, I took it out one evening to lend to a friend, so he could hear just how good they were. Unfortunately, owing to a short-notice train cancellation that resulted in me making a quick dash for an alternative service, I managed to leave my beloved Aztec Camera compilation on the first train, along with a Waterboys album my friend had loaned me.

At this point, you may be thinking, “Nice anecdote, but what does that have to do with High Land, Hard Rain?”. Well, in the days after losing that album, I went back into HMV to re-buy the album I'd lost and saw that it was nearly fifteen quid for a single disc. However, at a fiver each, were copies of Love, Stray and High Land, Hard Rain. Three albums for the price of one? There really wasn't much to think about. That day, when I got home and played Aztec Camera's debut album for the first time and heard nineteen year old Roddy Frame's first long-player in its entirety, I just couldn't believe how wonderful it was. Any album that begins with “From the mountain tops down to the sunny street/A different drum is playing a different kind of beat/It's like a mystery that never ends/I see you crying and I want to kill your friends”, let alone a debut album by a nineteen year old, has to be a stone-clad classic. Oblivious, just over three minutes of sheer joy and certainly regarded as one of Aztec Camera's finest moments, is a breathtaking introduction to the album, with its Latin beat, Spanish guitar solo and chords way too sophisticated for a hit pop song; certainly not what anyone would expect from a teenage from East Kilbride. This Boy Wonders, the song which the album title comes from, despite the folky introduction, keeps the momentum of jangling anthemic pop going before the superb Walk Out To Winter offers yet another infectious melody before the last one has even left your head. There are many immensely lovable things about Walk Out To Winter: the romantic, bittersweet lyrics, the brilliant yet unconventional guitar solo, the key change near the end and, best of all, Roddy's pure, honest vocals.

The Bugle Sounds Again is a pensive, storytelling ballad with a swooning chorus and big pop production; compared with many of the more obvious tracks (pun intended), it could easily be overlooked, but it really is a lovely song. Completely overshadowing it, and, indeed, most of Roddy Frame's catalogue, is the immense We Could Send Letters. While it could be argued that Frame has equalled the magnificence of this song, I'm not sure he has ever written anything better. It would be difficult to highlight exactly what it is that makes the multi-layered We Could Send Letters one of the best songs ever written, but the complex emotions the song conveys: the heartbreak, the post-relationship hurt and confusion, it's all here in lines like “You're free to push me and I'm free to fall”, “I'd try to lead you but I'd crush your hand” and “I found some blood I wasn't meant to find/I found some feelings that we'd left behind”. Perhaps it's the juxtaposition between the somewhat disjointed verse and the lush, melodic chorus that makes it so incredibly emotional that I have to close my eyes (as the song suggests) to stop the tears forming, whilst feeling like my heart is about burst from my chest. Maybe it's the way that, before the final chorus, the music comes to an complete standstill in a collapse of eighties tom-toms before one more glorious, soaring reprise, or it's the utterly inadequate, near-dismissive sucker punch, “But we could send letters”. It's probably all of these things and more, made even more astonishing by the fact that a bloody teenager wrote this.

After all that wrought emotion, Pillar To Post, a superb major chord, upbeat slice of indie-pop with a hint of soul is a breath of fresh air, yet the positive feel of the music is distinctly at odds with the lyrics which deal with the bitterness of heartbreak. Release may be one of the lesser songs on the album, purely by comparison, yet the lyrics are wonderful and the way it intensifies throughout the piece really pulls the listener in. The catchy Lost Outside The Tunnel is, again, not one of the best-known Aztec Camera songs, but it's one of the multitude of reasons High Land, Hard Rain is such a brilliant album; to have relatively unknown album tracks as good as this one just demonstrates the strength and depth of his songwriting. There's a touch of a country influence in the easy-on-the-ears Back On Board and the line “We'll take a train to the graves again/That we can learn the value of life” is a killer. The final track on the album is a beauty too; Down The Dip is a simple acoustic number about going to a local pub called The Diplomat, which was near Frame's old high school. It has a simple charm and honesty that is very winning and concludes Aztec Camera's debut album perfectly. It is a very special album to me and the product of immense talent; most of today's pop stars with their committee of songwriters and recycled tunes don't have a hundredth of Frame's creative ability. I must also mention the excellent performances of Campbell Owens (bass), Bernie Clarke (keys) and Dave Ruffy (drums), seeing as I've concentrated most of my writing on Roddy Frame; they were a group, despite Aztec Camera developing into Frame and whoever he was working with at that point in time. The musicianship on this album is absolutely top quality.

My first well-loved CD copy of High Land, Hard Rain was replaced five years ago with the Rhino re-release, a very attractive hard-back booklet style package that has full lyrics, photographs, original artwork and a Terry Staunton essay. It also boasts seven bonus tracks including decent rockabilly-style 'B'-side Queen's Tattoos, the pretty acoustic ballad Haywire, a track that is only slightly derailed by the jarring chorus and, finishing the non-album single tracks, Orchid Girl and Set The Killing Free, which, although perfectly nice and listenable, probably deserved their 'B'-side status. The remaining tracks, 12” mixes of Oblivious and Walk Out To Winter are collectors items and curios, but they are largely hideous, the remix of Oblivious, especially, sounding like a wilful attempts to sabotage a great song, and a good reminder that nostalgia for the eighties may be misplaced in some areas (actually, the Walk Out To Winter extended version is quite pleasant, if entirely unnecessary). Hearing 12” remixes may bring back fond memories for some people, but, in the case of Oblivious, all I hear is a song I love being butchered. Still, sometimes great things emerge from disaster. Maybe if I hadn't lost that Best Of album on that train, I may never have delved further into Aztec Camera's work and I would never have discovered the depth of Roddy's work or become the huge admirer of his musical and lyrical talent I am. I only hope that somebody found those CDs on that south London train back at the turn of the century and, perhaps, became an Aztec Camera (or Waterboys) fan because of their lucky discovery. I'd much prefer to believe that than to think the alternative: that a cleaner just lobbed them, unthinkingly, in the bin. As it is, the five stars this album gets awarded is for the original album, not for the bonus material, which I'm afraid, is slightly lacking.

First of all, I am appreciative of FINALLY getting a remastered version of such a classic, well-deserved album from 1983. It's been thirty years since the release of the debut album of Aztec Camera, and while I can breathe a sigh of relief, I am still somewhat bitter that it took so long, considering all of the garbage (guess what genre in particular) that has been released since then.

Anyway, the CD sounds pretty darned good, considering that it has not been remastered until this release. Overall, the CD is the best it has ever sounded, despite that it has Rhino (UK) listed on the jacket, but Edsel is the label's name. I say that because Rhino, throughout the years, has been inconsistent with their remastering process; some CD's sound great, while others mediocre. Also, I normally don't care for extended mixes, dance mixes, or remixes in general, but the extended version of "Walk Out to Winter" is nice, especially with its prominent keyboards.

This CD comes in a "book" form, and while I am not fond of cases that are not the standard jewel case, this book-style case is quite nice and of high quality, and not over-sized, which would have really ticked me off. The pages are filled with a few photos, and most importantly (at least, to most people), lyrics to every song, even the bonus tracks, which is uncommon. There are a few errors in the lyrics, but that is a minor quibble.

Overall, this is an excellent package, and quite a bargain, especially if you buy from a third-party.
