Anne Bronte’s first novel, first published in 1847, “Agnes Grey” tells the story of its title character, a young girl who works as a governess for families of the English gentry. Bronte based this novel on her own experiences as a governess and depicts the loneliness, isolation, and vulnerability of the position. The novel begins with the Grey family falling on hard financial times and a young Agnes taking a job as a governess to both help her family and show her maturity and independence. She begins work with the wealthy Bloomfield family and is shocked to find them cruel, shallow, and unfair. The position does not last long and soon she is back home with her own family and planning to try again. She finds a place in the Murray household, which is even wealthier than her previous employer. While her situation has improved, she is still marginalized and lonely. In the end, Agnes finds happiness and fulfillment on her own terms. “Agnes Grey” is a stern rebuke of the shallowness of the upper class of Bronte’s time and a beautifully written account of the challenges faced by young women born without many opportunities. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Anne Brontë (17 January 1820 – 28 May 1849) was an English novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Brontë literary family.

At 19 she left Haworth and worked as a governess between 1839 and 1845. After leaving her teaching position, she fulfilled her literary ambitions. She published a volume of poetry with her sisters and two novels. Agnes Grey, based upon her experiences as a governess, was published in 1847. Her second and last novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which is considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels, appeared in 1848. Like her poems, both her novels were first published under the masculine pen name of Acton Bell. Anne's life was cut short when she died of what is now suspected to be pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 29.

Partly because the re-publication of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was prevented by Charlotte Brontë after Anne's death, she is not as well known as her sisters. However, her novels, like those of her sisters, have become classics of English literature.

I thought this was a standard sized book, but it’s as big as a sheet of paper. Very awkward formatting & not what I was expecting. I’ll be returning this item.

I liked the character development. I really liked her growth in her faith. And her endurance through her trials. Well worth the read.

For some reason I had the idea this was more of a luxery item It isn't, it's pretty standard. I loved the story, but...

SPOILER
I hate it when the story goes along smoothly, and everything changes, abruptly, on the last two pages.

Agnes Grey is maybe the best written of the three well known Bronte books, others being Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I just finished the book and wonder how it is not more popular.

Before I read any of her novels, I had read those of her sisters and didn't think I would like hers. I was really wrong. It was a very well written book and I read it twice in one month, which says a lot for its quality.

And this book did not disappoint. I didn’t know there was a third Brontë sister writer but what a delight to find her.
