The ergonomics on the laser strike makes for a really comfortable hand hold regardless of the hold used. The SK-5 is a lighter knife in weight and is really a nice feeling knife when in use but is limited in overall comfort / hand holds due to the handle design. The Laser Strike has a nice kaydex sheath and the supplied belt hook is "OK" for the most part and I kind of like how it sits on the belt. Some may find this set up to be lacking so count on another $50.00 for the mollie back. The SK-5 sheath is nylon but overall more practical as delivered (without spending more money) than the Laser Strike. The mollie back makes the Laser Strike a big package and thats without adding the accessary pouch. I will use the supplied belt clip unless I am going into the woods for a few days as the combination of sheath, mollie back and pouch is too much for daily general use.
I hate the paint that production knife have these days and stripped both knifes, the SK-5 will throw sparks with the spine but the Laser Strike will not unless you do some filing on the spine. Kinda crazy seeing as the Laser Strike comes with a rod and tinder under the handle. The Laser Strike had a much nicer overall finish after removing the paint and the Laser Strike had a paint that was very difficult to remove verses the SK-5, the SK-5 had some really rough tool marks on the spine while the Laser Strike tool marks were minimal and easily buffed out with 2000 grit sandpaper.
Bottom line the SK-5 feels like a butcher knife and the heavier / wider blade Esee Laser Strike feels like an extension of your hand. The SK-5 is a better slicer for camp cooking due to the thinner blade lacks the weight for chopping. The Laser Strike if pushed could do some chopping but still not like a BK-9 or Junglas. I like the SK-5 but the Laser Strike will be my primary blade for a while based on the fact that I really like this knife, I will use the SK-5 but just prefer the Laser Strike ergonomics.
This is a beast of a knife. I have large hands and have found the Laser Strike to be an extremely ergonomic knife and s joy to use. The blade is 1095 steel that takes an edge well and holds up to abuse with ESEE's great heat treat. The micarta scales are grippy and are well crafted as they fit the knife perfectly and are contoured to prevent hot spots during use. The handle is much more comfortable than that on the ESEE 3 & 4 (too short) or the ESEE 5 (which is too wide). There is a forward finger choil to offer more grip options for precision/delicate work.
Hidden below the scales is a stout, skeletonized, full tang that hides a ferro rod for fire starting and a washer is on the lanyard paracord to use in unscrewing the flathead screws which secure the scales to the knife.
The kydex sheath for this knife is incredible. Much better than the molded plastic on some of ESEE's other models. It holds the knife secure and rattle/noise free and has an adjustable tensioning screw to allow one to adjust the retention to their liking. A plastic plate with a spring steel belt clip comes with it. I attached mine to a dangler belt loop and love it.
Another plus is the ESEE warranty, truly one of the besg in the business.
This is a great outdoors knife that is not too big or small, is comfortable to use and tough as heck.

I've had my eye on the Laser Strikes for quite a while, and finally saw it around $150 and pulled the trigger. The knife is near 5 inch blade length, 3/16" thick, high saber ground and perfect spear point. The micarta scales are well rounded and perfectly mated to the full tang blade. Inside the handle are a ferro/magnesium rod and 2 quick tinders. The powder coating on the blade is nice & thick and resistant compared to a few other well known brands.
Razor sharp out of the box, well balanced and a true outdoors/survival knife.
The sheath is a well made taco style Kydex model with several eyelets allowing various options for attachment, and it comes with a securing screw on the top that when slid up tightens the sheath and makes it harder to remove the blade, kind of a "lock". When slid back down, you have the normal Kydex operation. It also comes with an attachment belt clip paddle that you add to the sheath, the belt clip is something I've never been a big fan of, on any knife sheath, mag pouches or even holsters. It is practical to easily clip on or remove from the belt, but I find it to be somewhat narrow and hard to use with certain width of belts. Being a leather worker, I made a leather loop attachment, that allows a lower ride and more freedom of movement without being a dangler, and it accommodates wide belts.
All in all an excellent knife, with a very capable sheath, and definitely worth investing in.
