Bottom line, I have three Chromebooks and this is by far my favorite.
I use it everyday, and I put it through its paces. I primarily use Google Chrome, with at least 10-15 tabs open for 8 hours per day, and this Chromebook shows no signs of slowing down. Towards the end of my shift, I do notice the fans getting louder, to keep the internal parts cool.
I've only noticed two cons with this Chromebook:
1. The speakers are horrible. I didn't buy this for the audio quality, but they are bad. It says "Sound By Harman/Kardon" just below the keyboard, but that is simply marketing/branding. The audio sucks. Period. Use headphones.
2. The backlighting on the keyboard gets nice and bright, but you can see small inconsistencies. Some keys are slightly brighter than others, but it's not too big of a deal.
Overall, I love this thing. I'm working from home everyday, and this Chromebook was a wonderful investment!
After a couple weeks... I'm not exactly sorry I purchased the Flip 436, but, I am a little disappointed to be perfectly honest...
Let me get the complaints out of the way first:
1: THE Screen - is WAY-WAY-WAY Dimmer than that of the c434. It's amazing how bad this screen is in some settings. Even at 100% Brightness it is unusable in any kind of outside/brightly lit environment. I'm not talkin washing out or harder to read - I mean unusable. I have to say, having owned both... The 434 screen is actually better (by a long shot) in this department.
In real life, I used both the C434, and C436 outside under an awning sitting so the screen was not in direct sunlight. I could on the 434 adjust the brightness up to 80 or 90% and get a usable comfortable image. On the 436, even at 100% brightness the screen was nearly unusable. It is so sad that this screen does not even match that of its predecessor, and a huge disappointment.
2: The keyboard lettering: I read many negative reviews of the c434's keyboard and found in my own experience that just turning off the keyboard back light fixed pretty much any keyboard readability issues. NOT so with the 436. I don't know exactly how they have managed it, but, there are certain lighting conditions where the keys on the 436 can not be made readable. I don't know how they actually made this worse, but they have.... This is a extreme disappointment considering all the negative feedback they must have seen about the previous model.
3: The USB-A port is gone. Now I have to buy a hub or dongle. Of the three issues this is the smallest in my mind. I already needed one of these to get a working HDMI output so... Meh.
SO.
There is some good news and plenty I like:
1: The KEYS... Yes - In my humble opinion the keys (when you can read them) just feel better to my fingers. Compared to the keys on the C434 the 436 is a huge improvement in terms of tactile feel and sound. The C434 keys feel looser somehow and have an almost squeaky sound. Not so on the 436 - they feel solid and are a huge improvement over the 434, when you can see them...
2: The track pad. Compared to the c434, the track pad on the c436 is much improved. It's larger and feels better. It is a definite improvement.
3: Speed. OMG. I sprung for the 10th gen i5 with 16g and this thing flies (IMHO) compared to the c434 I gave to the Daughter. Again - improved for sure. On this subject I have to mention the heat. It seems to get warmer than the 434 does, and there is a fan... In my usage so far I notice the fan most when using Zoom, but not always even then. I call it a fair trade in return for what I perceive to be a much faster processor. Everything from cold boot to running Linux Python IDEs just feels a lot faster.
Other stuff. I read older reviews complaining of poor battery life. In my very non scientific measurements - I actually found the battery life on par or nearly so with the 434. Your mileage my vary.
To wrap up... IF the c436 had cost $50 more than the 434 I'd call it a 5 star fair trade for the improvements in speed and the track pad. As it stands - unless you absolutely "want" the 436... You should consider a different brand, or stick with the older c434. Perhaps one day they will figure it all out. If I got to start over again - I would not buy the 436 again. That makes me sad. ASUS took a real winner of a design with a few flaws, added new flaws, made it faster, too expensive, ruined the screen experience, made seeing keys harder, took a port away... In the process made it a poor choice for most users, a poor price to performance ratio for power users... All - in my humble opinion. I'll keep this one because I can work with the shortcomings, but it's honestly kind of a disappointment. This might be my last ASUS.
