4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Katharina Schütz is a young woman growing up in sixteenth-century Strasbourg. Immersed in the mystique and works-righteousness of medieval Catholicism, Katharina's life is one of curiosity, mischief, sorrow, fear of purgatory, indulgences and all the struggles of a regular teen in a busy home, full of siblings and daily challenges.

Living at the time of Martin Luther, the great Reformer, the currents of change and gospel light begin to cast their glow into Katharina's life. Eventually, hungry for a true knowledge of God and a living relationship with him, Katharina finds that God has mercy on those who seek him

Review

Everyone has heard the phrase "making history come alive." Katharina, Katharina is a fruitfully accurate demonstration of that experience. Throughout the fictional narrative, the past is softened and enhanced by authentic atmosphere and culture. Farenhorst brings us into a world that not only was, but a world that is--warm, loving, true, and tragic--"the fabric of life," she reminds us.

Farenhorst's scrupulous historical research presents not so much her deep knowledge of the times but her rich perception of the humanity and the profundity of the Reformation--interactions not simply of characters but of sinful people who seek to know the Lord. Katharina, Katharina presents a commendable understanding of the Reformation itself, its impetus, its exigency, its biblical scholarship and the confusing heresies so long ingrained in the minds of sincere believers.

The familiar phrase "the heart of the Reformation" commonly refers to certain key scriptural truths. Katharina, Katharina effectively displays that heart, but beyond that, it personally brings twenty-first-century readers into the heart of the Reformation.

--NORM BOMER, God's World News, senior editor (retired) and author of Sons of the River: A Nebraska Memoir

While the story takes place in the distant past, it is really very relevant for our times. Katharina was a real person who experienced a spiritual struggle about her relationship with God. We all have the same questions to face, and that same message of being hidden in the righteousness of Christ is the only sufficient answer.

The book is well written, it flows smoothly and engages the mind and heart. It is suitable reading for teenagers and adults.

This is the very best way to learn--Christine Farenhorst uses historical fiction to pair an engaging storyline with an instructive setting. So yes, the day-to-day details of life among the Schütz family in sixteenth-century Strasbourg are made up (though based on good research) but all the big events in the story are entirely factual...and highly relevant for our day. So even as Luther never makes an appearance, he looms large, and in a very real way this is a Luther biography. I absolutely loved it.

About the Author

was born in one of the northern provinces of the Netherlands in 1948. The youngest of six children, she was privileged to often visit parishioners with her father, a pastor and church historian. She would sit on the bar in front of him as he rode his bicycle, and he would nudge her with his knee and command: "Sing, Christine, sing-or I'll bump you off the bike!" So she sang-psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. In 1958, her father accepted a call to Toronto, Canada, and the bike was exchanged for a car. Her father instilled in her a love for history, and today Christine still sings of the remarkable providence of God on the pages of her books. Together with her husband, Anco, a semi-retired veterinarian, Christine resides in Arthur, Ontario. They have 5 children, 27 grandchildren, a dog, a cat and 11 chickens. This is her second book for Joshua Press.

Four stars, because Five stars are only for great works!

This is a lovely story, and I would reccomend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
I was so entranced by Katharina that I want to learn more about her. I plan to look up her writing, so I can get to know her better. Likewise Farenhorst's portrayal of family and societal life at the time is remarkable. Again, it is so well done that I just want to know more!
