only fault so far is bar oil filler is alittle to small, filling can be challenging
I recently owned and broke a ryobi pole saw about the size of this one. It lasted 3 seasons and it was heavily used by myself and 4 neighbors with many limbs cut down.
I was pleased with the instructional video on the site which helped in my initial assembly of this saw, it took about 5 mins to assemble after watching the video. The hex head bar bolt is very nice because it's an internal wrenching bolt and less prone to stripping out like a 6 point bolt in most other saws.
From end to end it's soundly and ergonomicly built. The motor housing is sturdy and the bar cover has a detent that locks it into place which will come in handy when it gets covered in bar oil. I've used it to trim apporimatly 30 limbs that range in size from 1/2" up to 3" and I have many more up to 6" in diameter which I'm certain this saw can handle given performance thus far. The shaft has pretty decent securing tension rings, but being plastic if you go German "goodantight" torque on them you can easily strip them out, especially if you use a strap wrench or pipe wrench.
Pros: affordable, ergonomic, sturdy, good consumer reviews.
Cons: generic model not proprietary to sun joe
I found this exact model saw in the same color scheme and design at harbor freight for roughly the same price, and $69 on sale with a Memorial Day coupon. It had the Chicago electric stickers on it instead of the sun joe stickers. However, the only Negative aspect I can find in this saw may be a positive one; the fact that it's sold to other vendors and re-labeled leads me to believe that replacement parts would be easy to find. The ryobi I replaced with this unit has a solid motor shaft and worm gear assembly which cannot be replaced without replacing the entire motor for $50. That same exact saw sells for $99 refurbished which also leads me to believe that the weak link in that saw is the motor assembly. With this saw I can buy brand new and if it ever breaks I'm only out the $80. If you take into consideration the cost of a new bar and chain (consumable parts) over the life of the saw it breaks down to nearly even assuming I get 3 seasons out of the sun joe.
Overall I am very pleased with this saw. If I had to do it all over I would consider purchasing the same saw from harbor freight (branded Chicago electric) and buy the 5 year warrenty for $19, IF I had the time to do so.
The free (2day) shipping and tax savings from amazon were the major factor in buying because I needed it quickly and didn't have time to make the 2 hour round trip drive to harbor freight not to mention waiting around for Memorial Day weekend when I already had plans to be out of town.
I hope others find this review helpful.
The only con I can think of so far is that it is a bit top-heavy. I am 5'8" and not exactly a weak woman, but I can see that this saw may start to feel a bit unwieldy depending on length and angle of usage. However, I think that would probably be the case of just about any pole saw. The only reason why I took one star off is because the chain that comes with this saw is not very good. It didn't last very long, and I found that I had to order a replacement chain fairly quickly (I ordered the Oregon brand 8" chain). If you buy this saw, I would suggest also ordering the replacement chain at the same time just to have it on hand.
Update (5/3/14):
I have now used this saw at the full extension to trim some top branches of my persimmon tree, and have confirmed that it is a little unwieldy. It took me a few minutes to find the right balance so I wouldn't chop off more than I wanted. I still say this is a good saw for the price, but be aware that if you are petite and/or not very strong, this is not something you can easily use when extended.
Also be aware that if you plan on cutting a lot of wood or using it on thick branches, you will go through a lot of chains! I'm already on my 4th chain and ended up buying a cheap chain grinder from Harbor Freight to see if I can get a little more use out of them. If you plan on doing a lot of chopping - especially if most of your chopping can be done at ground level - you may want to consider getting a regular chainsaw with a longer chain.
Top reviews from other countries
Used the replacement unit for the first time last weekend and it made short work of the pruning job. Easy to assemble, add oil and away you go.
I cut through a variety of branch sizes, from 1/2" to 4" and it worked great every time. Can be a bit "bouncy" on thinner branches until the cut starts. Used it for over an hour and did not have to add any more oil despite what other reviews said.
Did find it a bit hard to control at times when fully extended and the branch was cut through, the saw has a tendency to drop so you have to have a good grip.
Only real problem is that you want to keep cutting more branches...it's so easy to use!!
Would recommend to home gardeners wanting to prune back their own trees.
- Came almost completely pre-assembled except for attaching the chain head. Some reviewers commented that the instructions were unclear and could lead to a person attaching the chain "backwards." The instructions, which may have been revised given that feedback, is very informative and I found I could easily install the chain correctly.
- I recommend lightly filling the oil as the tank holds only 60 mL. Beware of overflowing it.
During use:
- The largest branch I cut was 9 cm in diameter; the saw is rated for almost double that, but I think that's stretch advertising. You'd have to be quite skilled to use the saw comfortably for large-diameter branches or trunks. That's beyond my beginner ability.
- Kick back is low. Be careful of the saw getting stuck halfway if you're cutting 7 cm diameter or greater. Keep the trigger switch pressed until you're in the clear.
After use/storage:
- Empty the oil tank if you're planning to store it for greater than a couple of weeks. The oil leaks even if you leave it upright (oil tank opening facing upwards).
The main pro is that the weight is manageable even at full extension. A con is that the saw teeth catches very easily to small branches, leaves, etc, so I found that I had to trim my hedge with a hedge trimmer a good deal in order to reveal the actual branches I wanted to saw off. Also, I kept peeling off the bark in a bad way during my cuts though I'm not sure if that's the saw or my poor skill.
