Strategy in 3D: Essential Tools to Diagnose, Decide, and Deliver 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Strategy decision making and action used to be off limits to all but the select few at the very top of an organization. It was a largely cerebral activity focused on grand long-terms plans made at annual off-site retreats away from the daily challenges of the business. That is no longer the case.

The current business environment does not wait for companies to slowly adjust in an annual meeting. The relentless pace of change renders today's long-term future tomorrow's history. Rapid innovations and ever-increasing complexities limit executives' ability to make decisions with perfect information. Does this mean strategy is no longer useful, or even feasible? No. Good strategists are needed now more than ever. But today's high-performing organizations think of strategy differently than in the past. These companies make strategy part of every manager's role; they strategize continuously and tackle strategic problems through individuals from all parts of the organization.

Strategy in this new, fast-paced world is about diagnosing the diverse array of complex challenges confronting organizations, deciding on novel solutions to address those challenges, and delivering by taking action on those solutions. Including a novel organizational framework and never-before-published application examples,
Strategy in 3D helps build these foundational skills and prepares the reader for success as a strategist in the 21st century.

Review

"Strategy in 3D: Essential Tools to Diagnose, Decide & Deliver (Oxford University Press), co-authored with two former Kelley School faculty members, presents insights into how companies can broaden and include more people in the strategic process." -- George Vlahakis, Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Kelley Blog

"Strategy in 3D is one of the most useful and practical strategy books I have encountered. It is structured extremely well around the core strategic modules of diagnosis, decision, and delivery. It also gives students a practical how-to guide to 15 of the most useful strategy frameworks. Students tend to enjoy the contemporary examples and it is clear the authors have written a book that remedies some of the typical issues in strategy textbooks." -- Will Geoghegan, Assistant Clinical Professor, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

"The simplicity and straightforwardness of the writing style is attractive. The fact that this book gets right to business without fluff makes it a book I would choose to use in the classroom." -- Marilyn R. Kaplan, School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas

"Strategy in 3D is a practitioner-oriented book that is easy to read and understand. The authors primarily focus on the various strategy tools and how each tool could be used for any business scenario. At the same time, the authors succinctly explain and duly give credit to the theory that each tool is based on. The first thing that caught my attention is the word 3D and its representation of the three important phases of the strategic management process - diagnose, decide, and deliver, with clear guidelines about the relevant tools that could be used within each phase for any firm." -- Sumita Sarma, Assistant Professor of Management, and Director, Business Research and Education Center (BREC), California State University Bakersfield

"Strategy in 3D provides a thorough and digestible overview of the fundamentals of strategy and important tools that can be used. The book is packaged together in a way that makes it easy to navigate and offers high-value to the reader. The authors show that they are not only experts in the field, but that they can also effectively deliver that expertise/knowledge in a succinct manner. It's a great resource for any strategic management class and I've also referred back to it for other classes and projects. It's definitely the best strategy textbook that I've read and I highly recommend it." -- Scott Wegener, Senior Marketing Specialist at Hatfield Consultants

He has recorded numerous audiobooks from just about every genre. When not bringing stories to life, he loves hiking in the desert with his wife and puppy, visiting Disneyland and, when time permits, reenergizing on the beach.

Invaluable book for the strategy toolkit- comprehensive, concise, and accessible
Awesome book! I have been waiting for years for a book like this to hit the market. It is no-nonsense, gets to the point, clear, comprehensive, yet pithy. Most helpful to me is that it covers a really wide breadth of strategy topics in a very succinct and logically organized manner-- not just core strategy topics like Five Forces or VRIO, but also key related topics like S-curves, hypothesis testing, business model analysis, segmentation analysis (really helpful for management consultants), and financial performance analysis etc. What I also appreciated was how the theories and frameworks were also grounded in real-life examples, which really helped me better understand the underlying ideas. For example, vertical integration assessment is taught with an example of Starbucks (Table 17.3), which for me really brought the idea to life since I learn through examples.Fisher et al. have really done a service for the academic and business community since this book is a great textbook replacement but at a very accessible price. Perfect for undergraduates to seasoned executives alike to get up to speed on whatever framework is needed at hand. This fantastic guide to strategy is a tremendous resources for students and practitioners of strategy. Highly recommended!

I've used this book across numerous different classes (e.g. exec ed to undergrad) and always get kudos on the selection from students. They love the simplified way in which each strategy tool/ framework is discussed and structured. The relatively short chapters (with no fluff) means that students will come to class having read the content. The step-by-step instructions to apply each strategy tool is also particularly helpful in allowing readers to not just passively read the content but to think about application to their own firm or context.

Readers come away from reading strategy in 3D with a holistic strategy toolkit (the book covers 20 or so of the most important strategy frameworks). It also serves as a great reference book post reading to easily navigate back to, in order to refresh a particular tool, model, theory or framework.

In summary, this book give a huge bang for your buck. There is no time wasted reading it and the learning outcomes are tremendous.

I have used this text in Strategic Management courses at both undergraduate and graduate-levels over the past couple of years and it has been a resounding success.

The tools based approach provides a comprehensive grounding that helps support students as they build competencies in strategic management, and it serves as a great reference tool as they continue to grow in their careers.

For the first time in my career, I have students writing to let me know how much they love a required textbook! They frequently cite how each chapter is so concise and readable, but perhaps most importantly, it makes them feel more confident and prepared for in-class discussions.

Since I switched to using this text, my students are more motivated and inspired by the subject matter, and I have seen a noticeably higher level of student learning.

Give this text a try. Your students will thank you for it!

I've been using "Strategy in 3D" for a few years now in senior-level, undergraduate strategy courses at an elite business school.

Thus far, it's been fantastic.

Top 3 things I've loved:

--Offers a nice balance between theory and application, including visuals and relevant cases.
--Chapters are short, but not overly so. Students seem to really appreciate this.
--The text is very affordable for students relative to other texts.

Depending on how you set up your course, it could be your sole text or simply a supplement.

Definitely encourage you to check it out and see for yourself!

I have been using “Strategy in 3D” in my undergraduate strategy course during the past 3 years. It is my go-to text for outlining what key strategic tools are and how they fit into the strategic process. It is a great classroom text and provides students with a foundational reference guide that they will be able to return to throughout their careers. Students appreciate the no-nonsense approach to the narrative and descriptions for easy understanding and access. Definitely has a permanent place on my teaching resource list.

The book lists and summarizes the most common strategy tools and techniques as individual 'skills'. Limited case examples.

Fisher, Wisneski, & Bakker do an outstanding job synthesizing established strategy tools into an accessible text. I use this text in both executive and full-time MBA programs and student reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The most compelling aspect of the book is its light touch compared to other strategy texts.

I also believe that executives and others tasked with strategic decision making will find it useful as a handbook to which they can refer for insight and inspiration as they address their strategic challenges.

I used this for my capstone strategy course this fall and really liked how direct the writing was...not overly wordy and expansive if not needed. The students even commented on how much they liked the book. It covered the key analysis tools and the necessary steps to carry out each analysis. Paired very nicely with the asynchronous content for my class! Would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the most important tools for strategists
Reviewed in Germany on February 18, 2021
I found Strategy in 3D to be a very accessible and application-oriented introduction to the key tools of strategic managers. I use the book as a central resource when teaching strategy to business school students and my students seemingly enjoy that the book gets straight to the point and focuses on application rather than the underlying theories. At its core, the book introduces readers to 15 of the most popular strategy tools and provides step-by-step instructions for applying them. The authors provide a clear structure to the strategic decision-making process (anchored to the 3Ds of Diagnosis, Decision, and Delivery) and do a great job in mapping these tools onto the different stages of their 3D framework. Drawing on their expertise as both researchers and educators, the authors illustrate each of the tools with an insightful mini case study and critically reflect on each tool's downsides. While the book provides a great resource for management students, I think that it can also help managers and consultants in expanding their toolbox and improving their strategic decision-making.
