I'm torn over this one. The performance was really good. I very much enjoyed listening to the actors, though their script was exasperating at times. Too many hesitations in the form of "oh... uh..." "um..." "What?" "I'm sorry, uh, what was that? Oh, yes... well..." "Hmm? No... I... well..." Those aren't actual quotes but you get the idea. And it's usually from Catriona. I know she's hit with some major mindblowers all through the book, but jeez. The girl can't catch up to save her life. She's the weakest of the weak but imagines she's strong and independent except when there's fighting involved. Only then does she have a strong survival instinct and can suddenly best the murderers she comes up against. She's incredibly naive and mulish to a fault. Instead of her stubbornness making her a strong woman, it makes her annoying and stupid. She's from a country town, wholly ignorant of the seedy side of Victorian London, but insists she's just as capable as an established cop there. Except every time she's confronted with the city's underbelly, she's left floundering and in need of rescuing. She continually flouts rules and safety advice until she goes beyond women's lib and is just rude and disrespectful. And then she gets herself into a heap of trouble where, of course, she needs saving. But instead of learning, she does it all again and acts as if she's helping the murder inquiry more than the cop who continually saves her ever could. In the beginning, I could understand her refrain of finding justice for her father's death, but after a while, I'm amazed that she continues at all. I'd explain but don't want to give spoilers. She's a stupid child who suddenly gets strength and power without actually getting anything at all by the end. I know she'll just get herself into another scrape after the story's done and no one will be around to save her.
Enough about her. The supernatural element ended up being a bit disappointing. I love ghost stories. This wasn't a ghost story, though we're led to believe it is. There's a twist, but whether it's good or ho hum, I can't decide.
I didn't like the ending. At all. Being the only decent man in the entire story, I thought Culley should have gotten something better than what was written for him. It didn't seem right at all.
I've mentioned mostly negative things, but it was a decent story. I think I'm more okay with it because I got it way back in the day when it was free. If I had paid money for it, I would've been a bit disgruntled over the loss because it's not normally the kind of book I'd sit through. Not because of the themes but because of the negatives I mentioned above.
It seems her father was not the respectable businessman he appeared to be.
Instead he inhabited the unsavory Darkwater Reach. An area offering
particular diversions not found elsewhere. Helping her traverse through the profusion of sordid lies and grim secrets, is Detective Cutley.
Together they risk their lives to uncover the truth.
I found this to be a grisly yet captivating story with so many surprises. I could
not stop listening. The narrators were extremely good.
At times I was glad it was daylight while I was listening. If dark, stagnant, deep swirling waters plus the things that float in them trigger your interest, do not miss this unnerving story.
One word of advice, proceed with caution. Some things are best left buried.
