Thermal Scan Detects Actively Heated, Water-Filled PipesThermal Scan Mode: Use this mode to detect actively heated ½ inch (13 millimeters) diameter water-filled PEX Tubing up to 2 inches (50 millimeters) deep. In Thermal mode, the x85 scans for elevated temperature readings, even subtle changes, directly above the heat source. |
StudScan & DeepScan Find the Edges and the Center of StudStudScan Mode: Use this mode to find the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to ¾ inches (19 millimeters) deep. For best results, always start in this mode when looking for studs. DeepScan: If StudScan mode provides irregular readings, or the Signal Strength Indicator is weak, the studs might be behind more than ¾ inches (19 millimeters) of drywall. Quickly push the handle of the device downward twice to switch into DeepScan mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1½ inches (38 millimeters) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets. |
AC Scan Mode Helps Find and Trace Live, Unshielded WiresAC Scan Mode: In this mode, the LCD screen finds live, unshielded, electrical wires up to 2 inches (51 millimeters) deep. Move the x85 slowly across the surface and the signal indicates whether you are moving closer to or farther away from the source. Mark where the strongest signal appears. Continue this process to track the wires through the walls. |
The Key to Success is in the BatteryThree new, fully charged AAA batteries are required to steadily power the integrated LCD screen in Zircon tools. Please note that, like a cell phone or any personal electronic device, the batteries needed to power Zircon tools can lose power even when sitting idle. The installation of a fresh battery, with an extended expiration date, typically resolves 99% of problems. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What is the 'Thermal' mode of the scanner designed to do?
Answer: Thermal mode detects heated water in ½ in (13mm) PEX Tubing (such as is used in radiant heating applications) up to 2 in (51 mm) deep.
Question: Does the MultiScanner x85 work on lath & plaster walls?
Answer: Due to irregularities in plaster thickness, it is difficult for the MultiScanner x85 to locate studs in StudScan mode. If the plaster has metal mesh reinforcement, the x85 will be unable to detect studs through that material.
Question: Can I use this scanner on the exterior of my home?
Answer: No. Zircon StudSensors are designed for interior use only.
Question: Does the MultiScanner x85 come with batteries?
Answer: In most cases, yes. Three new AAA batteries are required.

Product Description
The Zircon MultiScanner x85 is a one-of-a-kind wall scanner with its patented ergonomic pivot pinch grip and the latest in density detecting software. The MS x85 thermally detects and allows the user to map water-filled hydronic radiant heating, scans for live unshielded AC wiring, and locates the edges and center of wood and metal studs. The center Mode Button makes it easy to change functions while the backlit LCD screen, arrow shaped SpotLite Pointer, and audio tone all indicate the location of the target. The Signal Strength Indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets. The MultiScanner x85 also includes ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) that automatically corrects common user errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud, in addition to a low battery indicator to alert its users to replace its battery for optimal performance results. Keep in mind that the tool’s LCD screen and internal technology requires a fully charged battery to run optimally. The MS x85 acts as a stud finder in two of its four modes. In StudScan mode, the multifunctional x85 locates the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 of an inch deep. Press the Mode Button twice to switch to DeepScan mode and double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches. Additionally, the MS x85 is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches deep when using both stud scan modes. To detect, locate, map, and trace the live wires, simply press the Mode Button twice more to shift to the AC Scan function which finds, and traces live, unshielded AC wiring up to 2 inches deep. Pressing the Mode Button two more times will set the MultiScanner x85 in Thermal Scan mode. In this mode, the x85 thermally detects the center of actively heated water-filled ½ inch diameter plastic pipes up to 2 in. deep. This feature is perfect to detect, locate, map, and trace radiant floor heating systems under tile and other flooring. The Zircon MultiScanner x85 multi-surface scanner is the perfect tool for contractors and serious DIY remodelers alike allowing you to safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

This is the second Zircon stud finder I have. The first [older] was bought over the last 10 years and is simply labeled as STUDSENSOR. This new product is just as inconsistent as the first. The older model has a vertical set of red LEDs. As you transverse the stud, the LEDs light from bottom one at a time to the top light. The center of the stud is implied by the top light lit. As you pass the stud, the LEDs turn off in descending order from top to bottom. One's job is to judge where center is by picking a point in the middle of the upward and declining LEDs.
This new model is more definitive about where it thinks the stud-center is located in scanning from left to right by beeps and when an upward pointing LED light on the wall appears, a 3 bar strength indicator is lit, and the middle of a 4 segmented bar is shown. At times it stays on until it decides to turn it off (perhaps by seeing the right edge being detected. (Scanning from right to left shows the bar, but no beep until the center is detected). As you move along you must watch the segmented, black horizontal bar carefully as it will be the 1st indication of the end of the stud (I believe the second is indicated when the strength indicator bars disappear).
Pros:
Center indicator of stud is usually right on.
The segmented bar helps to understand the studs width if that is important to you.
Cons:
Inconsistent results when scanning in reverse. The user interface changes slightly.
The screen is too small for the amount of information being presented; I surmise to conserve battery power.
Bar segments hard to see and questionable in value.
The signal strength is too weak to detect foil wrapped Zip power line. In my experience, contractors will use large hole cutters to run power cable. The cable could be resting anywhere in the space of the hole. In my application, I'm wanting the maximum depth screw into the edge of a 3/4. The sensor's limitation (as is also with other sensors on the market) is detection up to 1.5". I have 5/8 drywall. That leaves a screw anchor of only 1 inch. This unit will not see most of the power lines. Nor will it see any low voltage cable used for intranets, appliances, etc. [In some counties, the code requires the contractor to nail across the stud a steel plate to avoid drilling into wiring.]
Battery cover is a bit difficult to lock in - wires attached to battery post are in the way.
Battery life is not specified.
The higher up the wall you use this product, it's more important to have a straight on view of the screen, and the use of a 3rd arm for balance and the use of a marking instrument.
I did not validate the detection of non-ferrous metal.
I have been 5-star happy up until today, when the "mark" function started malfunctioning. The manufacturers intelligently designed their scanner to include a small piece of pencil lead that makes a small mark on the wall when you press the corresponding button. They even thought to include 3 refills underneath where the battery is - very smart design!
It is a really minimal aspect of the scanner's functioning and is VERY convenient when it works, but extremely frustrating when it doesn't. I expected that for $70 I could rely on this thing's ability to make a pencil mark when I press the "mark" button. I have not dropped this thing, I've been gentle with it, and I've taken good care of it, so this is disappointing.
