What does it mean not just to survive, but to truly live?
One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Among them are a Wall Street wunderkind, a young woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy, an injured veteran returning from Afghanistan, a business tycoon, and a free-spirited woman running away from her controlling husband. Halfway across the country, the plane crashes. Edward is the sole survivor.

Edward’s story captures the attention of the nation, but he struggles to find a place in a world without his family. He continues to feel that a part of himself has been left in the sky, forever tied to the plane and all of his fellow passengers. But then he makes an unexpected discovery—one that will lead him to the answers of some of life’s most profound questions: When you’ve lost everything, how do you find the strength to put one foot in front of the other? How do you learn to feel safe again? How do you find meaning in your life?

Dear Edward is at once a transcendent coming-of-age story, a multidimensional portrait of an unforgettable cast of characters, and a breathtaking illustration of all the ways a broken heart learns to love again.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of January 2020: There are some books whose descriptions defy their own power. Dear Edward, at least from my point of view, is one such novel. The premise is stark: the aftermath of a plane crash that killed 191 souls on board except a young boy named Edward. And the structure is somewhat expected: it shifts in time between after the crash and the cross-country flight that ended in devastation. But to view Dear Edward by its plot points and form only hints at the emotions one might experience while reading. So let me tell you this, Ann Napolitano’s novel made me breathe deep with heartbreak and made me cry—I mean cry-in-public cry. But, it also made me laugh out loud and marvel at the resiliency of the human heart and the power that one person’s friendship can have on another—no matter the age. This is a novel that is more than the sum of its parts and, despite the necessity of tissues, is a joy to read. —Al Woodworth, Amazon Book Review

Dear Edward so, so much. It made me laugh and weep. So many times I had to stop after reading a paragraph to acknowledge the beauty of Ann Napolitano’s writing. In Edward, his friend Shay, and the passengers on the airplane, Napolitano offers unforgettable characters, people you know you will miss after you’ve turned the book’s last page. Magnificent!”—Lily King, author of Euphoria

Napolitano weaves Edward’s devastating post-crash experience with heart-pounding chapters set during the final hours and minutes of the flight. Though there’s so much tragedy and loss in this novel, there is also a lot of hope.”Real Simple, “The Best Books of 2020 (So Far)”

I was engaged with this story from the first page to the last. The character development was wonderful, each portrayed deeply leaving me feeling like I understood each one’s reaction to life’s circumstances. A wonderfully told story that makes you appreciate life.

4.5 stars. Ann has a gift for character-driven stories. At points the pacing can seem slow, but there is something truly beautiful about her storytelling that grips me every time and I can’t put the story down. The story arcs in a tragic plane crash that leaves only one survivor, 13 year old Eddie (Edward). His mom, dad, and brother are part of the 191 people who die in the crash. He moves in with his aunt and uncle and struggles immensely with grief, depression, and finding his place when everything that defines him is stripped away. We follow him in his journey to discover himself, his relationships with others, and grappling with the ‘celebrity’ and expectations of others being the lone survivor of the crash. We also have other passengers’ stories woven in along the way. Recommend reading and sitting with this one for a bit.

I could not put this book down once I began reading. The story weaves effortlessly between two time periods, but it is not confusing at all and adds to the tension of the story. I have not read a story like this before and will definitely read this author again. I will be recommending it to all my book worm friends! Thank you Ann Napolitano 📚

I became totally immersed in Edward's life, his story of survival. I found myself feeling his emotions and feeling them. I love how Shay became his "other half" almost taking the place of Jordan at one point. I love how he can sense the good and bad things going on with his Aunt and Uncle. I loved when he worked with his Principal and best of all I loved his generosity. I'm certain he grew up to be an amazing man. I would recommend this book to everyone, it's so worth your time to read it and let it wrap you as it did me!!

The story line, the facts that build this book are only a small part of what you get to take away after reading it! The weight of death, the response of those left behind, and the journey of recovery leaves you with the hard questions! What matters? What next? Why? Why not? How? Will it matter? Worth the read and worth the walk in the woods to ponder! Nice work Ann!!!

This is most definitely not the book to read while on an airplane!
Survivor guilt is raw. We can try to understand it but unless we experience it we never will. Get the tissues ready for a heart breaking story. I promise you will read the ending with a smile and hope. Great writing!

I am conflicted.

I am a tad disappointed.

I thought I would love Dear Edward. I wanted to love it.

But I just didn't. And I think I know why -- but more on that in a minute.

Based on true events, Dear Edward is the coming-of-age story of (you guessed it!) Edward, a twelve-year-old boy who loses his entire family when their plane to California plummets to the ground. Edward is the sole survivor of the crash, while the lives of his father, mother, brother, and nearly 200 other people on the flight tragically come to an end.

The novel flits back and forth between telling the story of Edward's personal journey after the crash and giving us glimpses of the lives of a handful of other passengers on the flight. Both narrative threads ultimately culminate with the passengers' final moments before the crash of the plane.

One only has to read the blurb for Dear Edward to know that it is a novel about grief, loss, overcoming tragedy, and survival. Going into it, one expects a deeply emotional, heart-wrenching read.

But you know what? It really isn't-- and there's the rub.

Napolitano's writing is cold . . . distant, almost. Instead of a novel, I often felt as if I was reading a report written by a journalist . . . or that the story was being told by a play-by-play announcer.

Where is the emotion? The love? The grief? The sadness?

Because I didn't feel it. It just wasn't there.

And that absence of emotion was very problematic for me.

I didn't feel close to the characters. I didn't feel inserted into, consumed by the story. My mind wandered off at times because I just wasn't THAT emotionally invested in the novel.

Oh, there were a handful of times while reading where I was surprised to find that I had tears in my eyes. But I recognized that my tears were brought on more by my own personal empathy for Edward and his family -- not by Napolitano's writing. As a mother of two young boys, I couldn't help but imagine one of my sons in Edward's place. (How I shudder at the thought.)

But still . . . as flawed as it may be, Dear Edward really isn't a bad read. I did enjoy it.

It's just not a great read.

And it could've been.

If Napolitano had put a little heart into it, it really could've been.

This is both a beautiful and painful story about loss and what it teaches. In addition, there are comedic lines that made me laugh out loud and helped soothe the sadness. It is not just a tragic story of a young boy who survives a plane crash. The story is the vehicle for how we are all connected.

Loved it from the first page to the last. Of course there is a lot of imagination in what could have happened on the plane, the thoughts and interactions the passengers have, but who knows... I particularly liked Edward's development after the accident. There are many touching moments. Definitely worth a read.

I LOVE this book. Finished it in 2 days. The author has spun the story so beautifully. We read about the events leading up to the crash and also the story of the survivor after the crash. This book had so many emotions. I felt so bad for the person who survived, but I am glad that in the end, he found his way. To be left behind is the worst feeling. I want to say so many things about this book, but I can't put them into words, this was THAT GOOD A BOOK.
Please give it a read. It won't disappoint unless you are an emotionless being.

Dear Edward or Eddie is a story of a 12 year old boy that is the lone survivor of a plane crash that takes not only his mom, dad, and brother but 188 other passengers. This story will take you behind the scenes into the lives of of the people on the plane and then Edwards journey to healing. I loved this story so much I found myself getting up in the middle of the night trying to read more of Edwards journey. The characters in the story made you want to get to know them more. I found at times I wanted to sit with them and even hug some. I highly recommend this book
