I've had the same tube of trombotine since 1995 when I switched from slide oil! Still the best slide lube out there! You only need a small amount and some water in a small spray bottle.
I tried this slide cream after a few of the better players in my swing band recommended it over the creams in a jar, and I can’t argue with the results. It definitely reduces the friction I was feeling.
Tested and proven, I’ve played trombone for 6 years and I’ve utilized different lubricants for my instrument but nothing ever beats the value and performance of Trombotine. My go to no matter what happens.
Be careful when using this product. With Trombotine, less is more! Clean the slide thoroughly inside and out, and place a tiny tiny tiny little bit of this on the end of each stocking. When I say tiny, I mean about the size of a small bead. Rub it into each slide until it is gone, and then work it thoroughly into the slide using the slide back and forth. Add a tiny amount of superslick slide treatment to each stocking and work it in again with the slide, spray some water, and enjoy a terrific slide.
I have used many different lubricants in the past, including Yamaha "slide oil" (not oil, the stuff in the white bottle), Slide o Mix, Slide o Mix rapid comfort, and some others. After cleaning my slide well and using this I have not looked back to the other stuff. This does not separate like the Slide o Mix does, it works well, and makes the slide consistent and smooth. I reapply about once every 2 weeks.
I use this on both my main trombones, an Edwards t-350 and a Yamaha Custom YSL-891Z.
I've had my trombone for almost 25 years. And I purchased it used. Sadly for most of that time, I thought slide oil was sufficient.
A few months ago, I started playing more often and was using way too much oil to keep playing. I looked at slide creams and other options for something better.
It came down to slide o mix and Trombotine. It seems that many people say slide o mix is the best. But the price scared me off. Decided to give Trombotine a shot since it was less expensive and users have sworn that one tube would last a very long time.
After a thorough cleaning I applied Trombotine as recommended in some YouTube videos and i will never go back to slide oil.
I only have reapplied Trombotine 3-4 times and it has been a few months.
Im not a professional and I dont play every single day. But one application gets me a few weeks of playing (at least) with only needing the occasional spritz of water on the slide.
If I was a pro, I would try the slide o mix. But I'm more than happy with Trombotine my playing frequency.
Trombotine is a different type of slide lube. Instead of being a oil that you squirt on the slide it is just a creme. Firstly you take the creme and put a pea sized ball on the end of the inner slide. You then have the rub the creme on the slide. You need to rub the slide fast enough till you can feal the heat of the metal from the friction. This heat cases the creme to become a liquid. One thing not included with the creme is a spray bottle. You need to spray water on the slide to activate the lubricant. My slide with regular slide oil made a harsh noise but with this lubricant the slide moves more freely on its own and really helped my playing. In a band that I play at most of the trombone plays use Trombotine. I would recommend this product. The only reason that I took of one star is because it doesn't include any instructions.
I first learned of Trombotine from a US Navy Band instrument repairman in about 1979 when I was on active duty at the US Naval Academy band. I had just bought a new Bach 50 B3 bass trombone, and he suggested that I try it...he was impressed with the way it made a slide...well...SLIDE! Prior to using Trombotine I had used Conn SuperSlick for a number of years. Trombotine uses a similar principle...clean the inner and outer slides properly first, then put a small amount of it on the slide stockings (extra emphasis on the words "small amount" should be noted...it goes a long way), then after it's thoroughly rubbed on the stockings and up and down the rest of the slide, spray water on it, and play. One application typically lasted me for a full 4-hour 18-piece big-band dance gig, and definitely long enough for a 2-hour-plus rehearsal. I've used nothing else since I found it, and a tube lasts a LOOOOOOONG time if you apply the right amount...which isn't much. When one of my sons appropriated the last tube I had to use on his trombone (before ordering another here on Amazon) I was sort of lamenting not having the above-mentioned repair shop to buy a new one, but was VERY happy to find it here! Considering that I don't play nearly as much as I used to, my guess is that this tube will now last me literally for the rest of my playing life...as long as I don't LOSE it somewhere! BUY some...if you are a playing pro (or student, for that matter) using a slide grease (not oil, then grease...the two don't mix...you need to use one or the other, or risk ruining your slide!), and you use it correctly, you WILL be happy!
