I devoured Eric's excellent Volume 1 in the Architect + Entrepreneur series ( Architect and Entrepreneur: A Field Guide to Building, Branding, and Marketing Your Startup Design Business , so as soon as I knew the second volume was out I grabbed a copy. Volume 1 provides a lot of inspiration ("the "why") and detail (the "what") of starting your own entrepreneurial architecture practice in the digital age. Volume 2 swiftly follows up with in-depth guidance and case studies (the "how") for one specific aspect of entrepreneurial architecture practice: passive income. There is no comparable book that approaches passive income specifically from the perspective of an architect. (No, not even one by Pat Flynn, in case that thought crosses your mind.) The book covers useful background, the mindset needed and dives into affiliate marketing, advertising and several passive income generating products that architects should consider. It's clear, that for a variety of good reasons, Eric is avocating the products route and so he provides considerable more detail and guidance on this passive income stream over multiple chapters.
Eric's writing is a pleasure to read and learn from. He crafts an exceptionally good mix of high-level guidance and very specific examples and details to learn from. Highly recommended for all architects and design practitioners.

I am currently an intern architect, happy with my job, but I would like to be a bit more mobile in the future and start my own business one day. My goal for 2016 is to get a blog up and running with the intent to turn it into a successful business. This book has made that vision not only a possibility, but a has given clear steps and ideas to make that vision become a reality (only if I act on it). It helps spark the imagination when trying to challenge the traditional business model for an architect to resonate with today's market place. Sometimes I feel that our profession is becoming irrelevant and Eric proves that we still have a place in the world. His ideas can apply to many business types, but it helps that it is architect-specific. I would recommend this book to anyone in the architecture field who wants to run their own business, even it if is not the transitional architecture firm.

Finally a book (two books) for the sole practitioner architect with relevant and usable information. I am working my way through both books a second time with a highlighter and taking lots of notes in a separate notebook. I have already used the book to push me over the edge in terms of changes to my business. I have had the foundations laid for a while now but lacked some basic and simple information to get going. One could get this information elsewhere in time consuming bits and pieces but Eric provides what I need here in one place and in a clear format. The first book is more inspirational (I've been a sole practitioner for 16 years already) and the second book has tons of very practical information but should be purchased and read together.

A nice primer for a very limited audience

This book is a well-rounded primer into one architect's approach to moving architectural design out of the "hourly services" realm and into the realm of digital products and passive income, using social media as the backbone of distribution and client networking.

Lots of links to interesting examples from other firms and sources that inspired the author. The book itself evinces many of the tips that the author recommends, such as limiting the amount of graphic content in a self-published effort (amazingly low for a book about architecture) to keep hosting costs down on Amazon.

In that same vein, I could not help but feel that certain parts of the book were being used to upsell other parts of the author's product line, which I suppose is in itself instructional but as a paying customer left me wanting more.

This book would appeal primarily to architects who run their own residential practices. As such an architect, I very much enjoyed and appreciated the author's point of view and willingness to share his approach with his competition.

Instead of complaining about low fees and meager projects, architects would be better served by reading this book from Eric Reinholdt. In it, Eric spells out a methodology for moving away from client work toward a more fulfilling and potentially more rewarding product-based business model. "Wait a minute", you're thinking. "I'm an architect, not a product designer." Eric reviews a range of product offerings architects could develop. He also illustrates how these offerings could tie into a marketing plan for more traditional architectural services. Eric's argument is convincing and he reinforces it with concrete examples of practitioners who have made the lead and are reaping the benefits. A must read for all forward-thinking architects!
