Code of Ethics: An Enemies to Lovers Romantic Suspense (Cipher Security Book 3) Kindle Edition
There are three things you need to know about Oliver Curran:
1) He's a fabulously wealthy playboy who incidentally happens to be a code-writing genius,
2) For maybe the first time in his life, he's trying to do the right thing, and
3) Someone wants him dead.
Oliver's life has already been saved once by the gorgeous yet grumpy "close protection specialist" provided by Cipher Security, Dallas Profeit. She calls him uncooperative. He'd prefer to think of himself as unpredictable and stimulating.
But when an assassin gets way too close for comfort, the party boy is whisked away from the lively city where he's the social king, to the desolate Yukon wilderness where Dallas is a master of survival (and grumpiness). Living wild and isolated reveals several illuminating truths, and suddenly they both find themselves in uncharted territory where grumpy can be sexy, sarcasm might be hot, capable is definitely dangerous, and trust is the strongest survival skill of all.
'Code of Ethics' is book #3 in the Cipher Security series. It is a full-length enemies-to-lovers romantic suspense novel, and can be read as a standalone.

In 2017, several authors expressed interest in writing stories for a theoretical “Pennyverse” (author Penny Reid’s Universe) in some capacity (whether that be writing a canon story about new characters within the Pennyverse, writing a continuation of a current couple’s story within the Pennyverse, writing a fanfic in an alternate timeline using Pennyverse characters, etc.) We collated the data we received, marinated in it, and created this collaborative business model.
Smartypants Romance is a small publisher that is indie-minded. It is a business whose mission is:
1) To be self-sustaining.
2) To be value added to: a) the authors and professionals (support personnel) who are published by/within/work for the SRU, b) the Penny Reid Brand, and c) the romance community and world at large.
3) To set an example of best practices, inclusion, representation, professionalism, mentorship, and craft-excellence.
4) To be drama free and efficient.

Code of Ethics is Book 3 in the Cipher Security series by April White. From the very first page I was entranced by what I knew was going to be a captivating story. We meet Dallas straight away, and Oliver too, as they become acquainted with one another in surprising and somewhat suspenseful circumstances. The book quickly revisits with old favourites - Quinn, Darius, Anna, Shane and Gabriel and it's part of the appeal of Code of Ethics, though Dallas and Oliver certainly have their own story to tell.
These two begin a somewhat push and pull relationship as Dallas is assigned in keeping Oliver safe. He is a man of many layers and I really enjoyed as these layers of charm and nice-guy were pulled back as the book progresses. Dallas too, has her own barriers built and we too get to know her truly throughout their journey. And what a journey it is, as we head north from Chicago to the Yukon in northwest Canada. We meet Dallas's family, those who reside in the Yukon as well as her family members who stay there from time to time. The rich history (and sadness of the First Nations history) of Dallas's family, their First Nations heritage, and their land had me hooked and my knowledge of Canadian Indigenous peoples grew vastly, which I thank the author for, as she wove this knowledge in a beautiful story set in such a wondrous place. Dallas's skills in the wildlife and in the nature of her job as a close protection security specialist, are just a wonder and I could not stop reading! Add in culinary delights from Oliver and the amazing meals he prepared, this book hit all then right spots for me, and I haven't even mentioned the romance yet!
This romance is a slow burn. It is a bit of enemies to lovers, however these two enjoy getting a rise out of one another and only see what they want to see in the other, until they don't. Forced proximity enables them to see the real Dallas and Oliver, and their vulnerabilities. Oliver especially, as he is painted as a rich and smiling playboy, yet we slowly learn the why and how of his demeanour. And Dallas, she has so much weight on her shoulders, she is so brave and strong and capable, definitely one of my new favourite characters!
Code of Ethics is one of my top reads of 2021, and I am so thankful I have read this book and series! April White is an amazing writer who can write a wonderful story, Code of Ethics is still firmly in my heart and mind days after finishing it.
Dallas was such a great character - she has skills! Dangerous and so very capable, yet really quite reserved at times personality wise. I wasn't sure at first about Oliver, but he grew on me across the story - he's a very friendly and flirty person but all that disappeared in the presence of Dallas.
One of my favourite scenes would have to be Oliver's first meeting with Reed - it was so unexpected, and made me laugh. Poor Oliver.

11/10!

One of the things I love most about April White’s books… aside from the amazing story-telling that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go, is that I always always learn something(s). The time and care that so obviously go into her research… it’s truly unique and just puts her a step above.
This is a sensitive and smart take on the bodyguard and the one she’s guarding. Yes, *she*. Dallas is a fantastic heroine and I loved getting into her head and the growth she goes through throughout the story.
“…the woman in the window had let me see her vulnerability, and she would never be anything but beautiful to me again.”
At first glance- Oliver may appear to be a classic nice guy hero, yet, he has so many layers. I am always on the search for heroes who don’t fit that typical “alpha” script and he absolutely delivers. He is one of the most true to life, sweet and honest heroes I’ve read in a long time.
These are two broken people who have dealt with immense grief coming together to handle a threat, but ultimately learning to deal with their crap and open up their hearts.
I loved that it is our heroine who teaches the hero so many things and that he is eager to learn. The banter between these two… 🥰. While a more seriously themed story, I laughed aloud multiple times. Oliver is so funny and sweet and earnest, you cannot help but fall in love with him.
“Maybe it was a minute, maybe it was five, but holding her felt like the only thing to do in the wide world of doing things.”
One of my favorite parts about this story was the tie in to the previous two (Code of Conduct and Code of Honor). It is an absolute standalone, yes, but it brings in characters from those novels and offers a truly satisfying ending. I’m so thankful I found April White through Smartypants Romance and I look forward to reading whatever comes next from her.
