Product description

Review

“This book changed the way I relate to others, and to myself, forever.” ―Gavin De Becker, author of The Gift of Fear

“Karla McLaren's unique, empathic view of emotions surprisingly revalues even the most "negative" emotions and opens pathways to understanding the depths of the human soul.” ―Michael Meade, author of The World Behind the World and The Water of Life

“In my graduate education in counseling psychology, I found very little information about our emotions. Yet in my work as a therapist and educator, I've seen that emotions are key to healing. Karla McLaren's book offers an outstanding guide to the signals and messages emotions send us, along with clear instructions for intelligent and emotion-supporting actions we can take in response. Karla has made a huge contribution to the well-being of us all; The Language of Emotions will become required reading in all of my courses.” ―Nancy Feehan, MFT, adjunct professor of counseling psychology at the University of San Francisco

This book came highly recommended by several colleagues of mine. I'm finding it easy and enjoyable to read. It's told from a personal perspective and explains very clearly why it's so important to connect to and understand the purpose of our emotions. It's an excellent book for counsellors, therapists and anyone who wants to have have a healthy emotional relationship to oneself and others.

Had I had this book 25 years ago, my life would have been much more gratifying - I would have been a better mother and wife, but most of all I would have been better to myself. This is a "must read" book for everyone, given that our culture is forcing us to lose our primal language of emotions. The best part of this book is that it's actually a manual. It tells you exactly what questions to ask yourself to get to the bottom of what exactly you're feeling and why, and that, in turn, helps explain to you why you do the things you do. Read it, loved it and now I'll go back and reread it so that I can practice it.

This book is fabulous. Karla McLaren has written a book that can change lives. We often ignore or underestimate the importance of feelings to inform and assist us in our lives. McLaren talks about the main emotions, what role they play for us and how to utilize the message in those emotions. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to be a more socially and psychologically healthy person.

I don't know how we can live sanely without the information in this book. It needs to be taught in schools.
Thank you so much, Karla. This is Nobel Peace Prize material.

A wonderful look at how we can befriend our emotional selves and benefit from understanding what these "messengers" are trying to tell us. A great resource - counsellors and therapists should know about this book! Highly recommended.

I used this as part of my own research on my self for a paper. It is very well written. The thing that has stuck with me the most is that unfortunately it's "normal" these days to not know how you feel. I was journeying into my psyche and this book really helped me become more emotionally literate. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get more in touch with re-learning what they feel.

Was born into a cold family and only discovered ehat anger was ib my early 30’s. Use it more to read a chapter here and there from, rather than reading the book in one shot

If you are a professional it would be a great read but as a lay person, if trying to get out of c-ptsd on their own, it is just WAY WAY too much info to process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Counselling Studies

This book goes beyond, increasing emotional vocabulary. It provides insight in why its important to listen to (not block out) all emotions and then be able to use this awareness constructively. Particularly useful for counselling students considering 'wholeness', looking parts of self without voice (blanked blocked) to reintegrate into whole being.

Takeaways from reading the book:
- Pages 30, 162 and 253: All emotions are true information.
- Page 43: Welcoming emotions, which come to you, and letting them flow naturally through you is the foundation of handling emotions skillfully.
- Page 50: Ask and answer yourself what emotions you are feeling. Example: Is this emotion fear? Is it shame? When you do this, you become able to feel and think about emotions consciously. That helps you develop self-awareness.
- Page 71: Allow yourself to feel what you are feeling. That helps your psyche to flow.
- Page 369: You feel joy, when you feel you are one with something or someone.
- Page 387: Before we had formal language, we communicated using, for example, sounds, body position, eye contact, gestures, touch, and emotions.
