The Accidental Gatekeeper: Paranormal Women's Fiction Kindle Edition
An action-packed, humorous paranormal adventure.
Turning the big four-five isn't a problem for Everly Popa—it’s everything else in her life that's gone to hell in a handbasket.
It's bad enough that Everly's drug-selling husband is in jail and her adult daughter blames her for the situation. But now the FBI wants her to turn witness, while her husband's criminal friends want to keep her permanently silent. With no other safe haven, Everly returns to her hometown. A place she hasn't visited in twenty-seven years. And didn't leave under the best of circumstances.
It’s not that Everly has a problem with her hometown, exactly, but since it sits next to Hell’s Gate, there's bound to be a few issues. Like the archaic rules set by the angels who run the town. Or the fact that the townsfolk feel Everly abandoned her duties as one of the members of the town's founding families. But between celestial politics or getting gunned down by a drug cartel, Everly decides to chance finding sanctuary back home.
After a little good versus evil stunt at the town's border, Everly is let back in and for the first five minutes, things are great. However, soon all hell breaks loose!
Before Everly can take a deep breath and figure a way out of the mess she's gotten into, an angel gets killed, humans go missing and the town shuts its magical borders. Now Everly is trapped inside with dying angels, rampaging demons, and a witch with a murderous agenda. The only way out is for Everly to learn how to use her newly acquired Gatekeeper powers. But with no handbook provided, there's a snowball's chance in hell she'll figure it out in time.

A super fun read, with a hilarious main character. Everly Popa has everything in her life going wrong, and when she returns to her hometown of Crossing Shadows for safety and protection, she finds anything but!! She accidentally becomes the town’s Gatekeeper (to hell) and has no idea how that works. Add to that the battle between Demons and Angels going on in the town, and you have a fantastic, action-packed story!! When her high school sweetheart shows up, you can tell it wouldn’t take much to re-ignite the flame. But after so many years, both of them have baggage to overcome first. I really liked the slow-burning reacquaintance between these two characters.
Through all her issues, Everly manages to keep her sense of humor, with its sassiness and sarcasm. She had me laughing out loud so many times. And so did many side-characters too! Loved this book!
Sitting next to Hell's Gate, the town of Crossing Shadows, Texas, isn't your ordinary Texas town. It may look like it, but it's a chaotic mix of angels, demons, hellhounds, and a variety of other magical beings. Everly left years ago, denying her status as a "Marked" human, so she doesn't get the warmest of welcomes upon her return.
Everly's main goal is to keep her grown daughter safe from her husband's criminal pals. Sadie knows nothing of the family legacy. But before saving her daughter, Everly's forced into saving the town.
I like Everly, in part because she's not young. She has creaky knees and hot flashes, so she's an unlikely heroine. I also love the cheeky, snarky humor of the story, but Everly's heart shines through. She's a loving mom and wants to overcome the many mistakes she's made in her lifetime. The major characters are distinctive and fun, and the story moves less like a freight train and more like a supersonic jet...lots of action all the time.
This isn't the type of book I normally read, so if you love what I've already written, you'll enjoy this book. And I did, too, to a point. I would have liked to catch my breath here and there. The pace was a bit too breakneck for me. It also seemed like there were too many varieties of magical beings, which got a bit confusing.
Also, I am assuming (hoping) that since mine was a downloaded advance copy, the text formatting will get fixed in the final version. The formatting is inconsistent, making the book harder to read.
As a series, this book makes a good lead-in. It's a complete story but leaves some unresolved threads as bread crumbs for the books to follow. I will probably want to know what happens next with Everly. (I have a pet peeve when a series book doesn't have an actual ending, but this one does.) For an author writing a series, a reader wanting to continue is the ultimate goal.
After finally gaining entry, using a crossroads demon no less, you’d think things would smooth out, but that was just the tip of the crazy iceberg of the next week that Everly and the rest of the people left in town have to deal with.

The writing is great, the characters are wonderful (I love how snarky Everly is), and the plot keeps you engaged and wanting more. I can’t wait for the second book to see what Everly and the gang gets into next. If you’re a fan of snarky kick-a** heroines, paranormal books, and witty writing, then grab this book today. Definitely a 5 star read.
**I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
