Now for the downside: this harness will more than likely take your dog some time to get used to. BUT, it's certainly not impossible. I don't have kids, but every child I've met never wanted to get in their car seat, dogs are no different. These harnesses are made with safety in mind, comfort comes second. Your dog can sit and lie down comfortably, however, they won't be able to turn around or walk across the seat. If they were able to do so this harness would not have passed testing. Many of the more comfortable harnesses that allow your dog to move catastrophically failed. Both of my dogs have anxiety in the car, neither of them liked the harnesses right off the bat, BUT with time and training they don't care anymore. Sometimes being a responsible dog owner means we have to put our pet's safety first, even if they don't like it.
If your dog is having difficulty with this harness, here is what I did, I hope it helps. You may not need to do all of these steps, it may take you a couple days or a few weeks, it just depends on your dog. All that matters is go slow enough and make the experience positive, they'll get used to it if you stay patient and calm.
1. If your dog isn't used to wearing a harness get them used to having it on first. Put it on several times a day, go on walks, give them treats, feed meals with the harness on. This will get them used to the feeling of wearing it and start to form a positive association with wearing the harness.
2. Take your dog in the car and buckle them in with the harness. Be careful not to lock the seat belt while buckling in, if you have a large dog this can take some practice! Let them sit for a minute, or even less if they instantly start to move. Stay in the back seat with them, praise them and give them treats for being calm and still while being buckled in. They can sit or lay down, it doesn't matter as long as they are being still. Do this a few times a until they remain calm while you buckle them in and can sit still without trying to walk or turn for a few minutes.
3. Buckle your dog in, now go sit in the drivers seat. Praise them if they don't move, then turn on the car, praise again if they don't move. If they do move go back a step, reward them when they calm down, then try again. Once you can start the car without them trying to move its time for a short drive. It really helps if you can have another person in the car to give them treats for being still, if not praise them with your voice, throw treats in the back as long as you can do so safely, but if not continue talking to them in a positive voice. Keep the first few trips short, no more than five to ten minutes, and give them lots of praise for being calm and still. As they get more comfortable with the harness gradually extend the length of your trips.
Thats basically it! After a few days of this my dogs could go on all our usual trips without any fuss. This harness is expensive and most dogs will probably get tangled up in the seat belt on the first try if you rush in, but I don't think that's the fault of the harness or a reason to give up entirely. If my dogs were in the car during an accident and got seriously injured or killed I can guarantee I would've wished I spent $80 and a few hours training if it meant they'd be safe. Happy travels, and thank you Sleepypod for keeping my pups safe!

I discovered and ordered this harness a little less than a month ago. I was happy to see that it was tested by the Center for Pet Safety and is the only dog harness certified by this organization. I got it in time to test it out a few times before a long trip to visit family, which is good because I used it wrong the first time (they send a neat little diagram that is very clear- I just forgot to consult it right before I hooked her up!). How it works for the car: it is a typical step through harness that latches in two places (sort of behind the neck/shoulders for the parts originating from the chest and on the top of the back from the parts originating behind the front legs). Between these two connecting straps are two other straps that go horizontally (sort of along the ribs) to connect the two, one on each side of the dog. These straps remain somewhat loose and you simply slide your seatbelt through them, securing the seatbelt to the entire harness as opposed to at one point like many harnesses do.
I'll be honest- my dog doesn't love it as she was used to complete freedom, but she tolerates it pretty well. One note: I tried to put it on my dog inside for fitting and getting her used to it. It did not go well, which gave me some concern about how easy it would be to use on a regular basis (several times a week). However, after a few uses, she now voluntarily puts her legs through the holes and lets me hook her up with no problems whatsoever. She can lie down and sleep if she likes. Is it more inconvenient than having her hop in and go? Sure. But I feel like we're both safer, and it's convenient enough that it's tolerable to use often.
Another note: my dog got very upset when I put it on her while standing at her door because she kind of got stuck facing whichever way she's facing when I hook it up, and she likes to face me when I'm driving. Something to consider (which way your dog would prefer to face- you can have front and left or front and right, but probably not all three).
I do use this in the front seat. The website does not say, this page does not say, but it does say in the instructions I received with the harness to use in the rear seats. I don't see how it makes a difference because the seatbelts are the same in the front and back, but I suspect it is more related to the back seat being generally safer, as well as the potential airbag issue. My car has a sensor for the airbag- I don't know what the weight is to employ the airbag but it must be over 40lbs since that is what my dog weighs, so I feel okay about her in the front seat. If the dog does set off the airbag sensor or if you do not have a sensor, the rear seat might be a safer option- airbags can be deadly.
For what it's worth- I got the medium for my 40lb border collie mix. I have had to tighten the straps a lot, so I would say it runs a bit big. The literature that came with the harness says that the medium is rated up to 45lb for safety. I think this was the correct size for her. Using the guide and her measurements, she was almost in the range of a small, but I'm glad I went with medium because the small is only rated up to 25lb. I have not used it as a walking harness- she has walked around in it a few times when we made a short stop before getting back in the car and it was okay, but I would not use it as a primary walking harness.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. I feel that my dog is safer and it is convenient enough to use that I actually do use it.
I ordered a new harness, was sent a clearly opened used product. It came in a ziplock baggie with a torn Open package containing instructions. I’m not confident all of the original materials were included. If this item was marketed and priced as a used, like new piece that would be fine. I am upset that I ordered and paid for a brand new item and received something that’s as opened and possibly used. As for the harness itself, it seems to be well made and sturdy. We didn’t get to try out this harness, as I ordered the wrong size for my 80 lb Goldendoodle. He is just shy of the XL measurement (I goofed when measuring him originally.) The buckles are a little hard to adjust, but it made me feel like it would protect him in a crash. I’m hoping the large fits him better. Ordered from a different site to ensure I actually get a new product. Will update this review with a more thorough review of the harness itself once we get the right size and try it out on a long ride.
