Product Description
Product Description
The stunningly accurate BIC America DV62SIB 175-Watt 2-Way 6.5 In. Bookshelf and Surround Speakers have received numerous "best buy" ratings from a leading consumer buyer's guide magazine. Their long-throw 6.5 in. poly/graphite woofers deliver tight, accurate extended bass. Their patented Venturi vents assist in extended low frequency performance. Custom-designed poly dome tweeters and unique front cabinet angles enable minimal distortion resulting in clear mid and high frequencies. BIC America speakers are ideal for use with all surround and music formats. They can be used as mains speakers, a front or rear center, and as surrounds.

Attention, all bass lovers needing small speakers: this stately pair of Venturi DV62si bookshelf speakers from BIC America uses a patented and specially tuned rear-panel Venturi port to extend the its low-frequency response to an impressive 43 Hz, nearly a full octave below the capabilities of most bookshelf speakers--the place where kick drums kick and bass guitars growl their deepest. The 2-way speakers would suitably fill out your home theater with surround sound, enliven your dorm or apartment with music, or provide gentle background ambience in your bedroom or business.
Use one pair for stereo or surround applications or pick up 2 pairs (4 speakers) for use as the front and surround elements in a multichannel listening system. The speakers are magnetically shielded for distortion-free placement near your television or computer monitor. Video programs sound more lifelike and enveloping with timbrally matched speakers all around, and plenty of newer music formats--from the DTS surround CD to DVD-Audio and SACD--offer music from your favorite artists mixed expressly for surround-sound listening. (Alternately, you could use these as surround speakers with larger, floorstanding speakers for the front left/right channels.)
Standing just under 15 inches tall, the DV62si speakers each use a custom-designed .75-inch, ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter for extended high frequencies and a 6-inch poly/graphite-blend woofer is light yet rigid for tight, accurate, and remarkably extended bass.

Their looks are pleasing; fit-and-finish is good to very good, not too fake-wood looking. For the price, it's acceptable.
The packaging is poor; I really thought my speakers were damaged when I removed them, as the cardboard box and the foam inserts were flimsy -- very poor quality. But, except for one of the back corners that was slightly dinged, they were in great shape.
I am giving them 5 stars for the very low price.
Update 6/13/07: I am very happy with the speakers. It has been several weeks and I enjoy them more and more every day. I have discovered that music can be fun to listen to again as I am hearing a quality and clarity that was missing with my old setup.
I've integrated a small subwoofer into my setup that extends the low end down a bit more. I listen to old LPs, an IPOD, and the local radio stations -- all sound excellent. Best sound/value speakers I have ever owned.
UPDATE 7/27/13: Well, what can I say. It's been six years since I purchased these babies on Amazon, and they have not let me down. Workhorses, they are; they get used nearly every single day and have performed flawlessly during that whole time. I just want to comment on two things: 1) the woofers' rubber surrounds are still in perfect shape, and 2) the cabinets' fit and finish is still great; the dark grey vinyl wood grain coverings have not peeled away at all anywhere. Of course, I have not abused them any as they have both sat in the exact same spot for years. And, the dust covers too have held up perfectly.
That's it, and see you in six years for another update!
UPDATE 9/7/2015: So, I went through a bit of a modding phase not too long ago where I updated and modded some of my audio equipment which included some LEPAI mini-amps and an old PIONEER receiver. I replaced all of the capacitors, basically, and some other things as well. The results were impressive to say the least.
I was going to do an upgrade to my set of BIC speakers, the crossover networks. But to my surprise, the crossovers are actually very well designed. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised as these speakers are somewhat highly regarded in the audio community and considering the price are all around well-designed (the cost by the way has gone up as smidge I've noticed).
Anyway, I can honestly say that along with the cabinets, the banana plugs, the tweeters and the woofers, the crossover networks are also very well designed. Good components are properly used throughout. There are 12 DB octave slopes on both the woofer and the tweeter; the tweeter's polarity is correctly reversed (Linkwitz-Riley filter); the correct type of capacitors are used for both the tweeter and the woofer; same goes for the inductors; the tweeter is padded using the proper type of resistor. All of the parts are soldered to well-designed printed circuit boards, which are part of the plastic banana plug mounts, screwed onto the back of the cabinets. KUDOS!
You know I just want to call attention too to the cabinets for a minute. As far as speaker design theory goes, they are very well-designed and solidly built: They are made from 5/8 in. thick MDF particle board; The speaker baffles are angled back at what looks to be around 45 degrees; this is a design theory used to minimize edge diffraction effects (look it up); The cabinets have sound absorbing material secured to the back wall, internally; and like I've stated previously, they have good vinyl faux-wood veneer coverings and durable speaker grills. In other words, whoever designed these speakers knew what they were doing and did not cut any corners to save a few pennies. If there's anything to remark regarding poor design, it's the fact that the tweeters are not countersunk into the front baffles; though this is a minor quibble and probably doesn't cause any truly audible anomalies (again, it has to do with edge diffraction).
These speakers still surprise me to this day. Thanks for reading!

First the negative, I'm not crazy about the veneer on the speaker. It's not really black as listed, more of a charcoal gray and has a heavy woodgrain type of pattern. And the seems of the veneer are not particularly smooth. They don't look bad at all, just that they could be better. The grills look nice, and more importantly the drivers look really nice without the grills on. The veneer is not a deal breaker by any means, just that they could have easily done so much better. OK, I'm nitpicking; the real rating of a speaker is in how they sound.
I've been running these about a week now. When I first played them, the tweeter was pretty bright and a bit harsh. This is consistent with some other reviews I've read. But as they get some break-in time, they seem to be smoothing out. I like a little extra brightness, so what I'm hearing is really sweet. The midrange is just right, you hear every note but not in excess at all. The bass is surprisingly robust. I run these with a 12" sub, but I turned it off to see what these speakers have without it. Honestly, they don't need a sub for music. I have no doubt that they reach into the low 40's with authority. Seriously...these are extremely well-balanced speakers with just the right amount of both brightness and warmth. I have not heard a bookshelf speaker that sounds better, and I'm not sure I've heard one that sounds as good. I have a set of Klipsch B3's and these actually sound better because the horns on the Klipsch are a bit brassy.
These are big boxes, just so you know what to expect. But I think that is part of the reason for the excellent bass response. Based on my experience, the better speakers usually have larger cabinets. BTW...I'm driving these with over 100 wpc and they are taking it in stride. Crystal clear, no matter how loud I've ran them.
Can you tell that I'm thrilled with them? $110 for a pair of audiophile grade speakers (yes, they sound that good), ridiculous! I'm sure there are better bookshelf speakers out there, but you'll pay many times this price for them and I doubt they will be worth the difference in price. Buy them!
Update - The more I play these, the better they sound. Working in my shop has become even more of a joy now. Some say that the tweeters are too bright, but that is not my observation. I am running a totally flat on these in my shop and the sound is just right. Typically, I boost the highs and lows a bit on my speakers, but these don't need it.
I am so smitten with these I bought a second set for my bedroom. They sound much better than the Energy speakers I had in there. As I mentioned before; the bass is so robust on these, you probably won't need a sub for music.
These will beat the 'name brand' speakers at the big box stores. $110 speakers that sound better than the $400 speakers with the familiar names on them.
Better get them before they are gone. I see that Bic has discontinued these, I only hope that they replace them with something even better.
I'll report back after I get more time on them.
Update 4-2-14
I'm still really loving these speakers. Bass is very robust. Highs are a little bright, but easily correctable. For the set I use in my shop this is actually a good thing because the room is a bit dead, so the extra brightness sounds great. On my other set I'm using in my bedroom (I bought a second pair), I do have the treble cut back just a bit. But I'm very happy with these speakers, especially given the price. The speakers I replaced these with were very good, and these were still an upgrade.
Update 6-4-14
I've had these for a few months now and I'm totally happy with them. I have a set in my master bedroom (I rock out while getting ready in the mornings) and they sound great. The other pair is in my workshop, and I play them LOUD!. I now have a Behringer PA amp driving them with plenty of wattage. They stay clear and clean no matter how hard I push them. The initial excessive brightness has gone away and I find these to be extremely well balanced speakers.
Put simply...there is not a better speaker for the price, and you'll do well to find another that sounds this good for 3-4 times the price. Bose, Polk, even Klipsch (which I am a fan of); these will blow them away for a fraction of the price. Truly one of the great deals in audio equipment.
I have ordered the center channel version to upgrade my home theater. I will report separately on it once I get it broken in and evaluated.
