There is one negative. The trimmer guard is too small. You will get flying grass and debris all over your legs using this. Not sure why DeWalt makes the guard so small or whether you could get a larger guard and install it. I wear long pants or sweat pants to use this and never shorts and never shirtless. You need to protect your legs using this. It works great and is powerful enough to cover your legs with grass and you need protection from flying stones. In my area in the mountains we get 50 plus inches of snow and the road crews throw down small stones for traction after plowing. So long pants a shirt and safety glasses are needed for protection. Other than the guard being small this trimmer is great and works on only one battery charge doing 400 feet of trimming. Usually I have a quarter charge left in the battery when I am done. It is lightweight, easy to use , quiet, cuts well ,powerful and easy to clean. No fussing with oil and gas with this!
Update: May 23,2016 --- I spoke to DeWalt today about the guard. DeWalt's factory rep said that this trimmer is mostly designed for
Professional landscapers although DeWalt knows homeowners use it also. DeWalt says that if it is used from right to left the Guard should be adequate and Professionals do not want Guards larger than the size it already is. I tried this and sure enough I got hit with much less grass and debris cutting from right to left. You should still wear protection either way but try the right to left cut method. It makes this trimmer Perfect for me and thus 5 Stars. I really recommend this.
Update:June 5, 2017---Trimmer continues to work perfectly and is used weekly. No issues.
Initial impressions are very good, I trimmed and edged my 1/2 acre lot with this trimmer, and it cuts much better than the Greenworks trimmers. A lot of the difference in cutting power is down to the dual .080 string design and the DeWalt comes in the box with excellent ribbed string that is very tough. I did bump-feed it a few times while trimming, but didn't need to; each time the string hit the cutter on the guard, when I did.
The edging performance is about what you'd expect, not much to say here. While edging you need to have it on the higher speed setting, which does chew up battery power faster, and you should expect to use string faster of course. When edging, be careful, as the minimal guard does allow debris to fly back onto your body/face.
The bump head is perfect and "just works". It's so nice, compared to the "spin it down and back up feed" of the Greenworks which is silly, or the automatic Black & Decker feed which simply doesn't work well at times.
One thing I really liked is that there's no additional buttons to turn it on and bring it to full power... Greenworks, I'm talking to you, get rid of those extra buttons to turn stuff on!!
I do have one very small gripe/rant, which is the same gripe I had about the top of the line Greenworks brushless trimmer... electric trimmers in the past usually have assistance/features to help you use them as an edger. The latest brushless model trimmers however, try too hard to emulate/replace a classic gas trimmer, and don't have the swiveling head or wheels/guides or anything to help on edging. This is one thing that the older brushed Greenworks trimmer does well, it has a head swivel and small wheel on the guard, and the Black & Decker 36/40v trimmer did the same with a fold-out guide. I know, pros will shake their heads and say "learn to do it freehand", but this trimmer is targeted at the typical homeowner, not a pro.
pros:
well balanced, not too heavy, excellent padded grip for non-trigger hand.
start-up is soft/controlled, recovery is fast when overloaded/bogged, good motor design
class-leading (for 18/20v size) dual .080 string head
easy to understand/use bump feed, no gimmicky "auto feed" or confusing mechanisms to learn
comes stock with tough and highly useful ribbed string, replacement string available at time of release
uses common tool batteries (any of DeWalts' 20v li-ion line)
very usable low setting for light duty residential edging, preserves battery life well
no separate buttons to turn on or enable full power, just a palm & finger trigger combo "instant on"
cons:
uses batteries fast when on High setting (especially when edging).
"classic" trimmer style/design, with no head swivel or flip-out guide to assist in edging
pro-style minimal guard that will allow a lot of flying debris back towards your body/face especially when edging
wraps up / jams up kudzu/vines between head and motor area easily (most trimmers do this, not a big con)

So I've been using this for a few months now and I'm still really happy with it.
I can trim my whole yard and it only shows 1 or 3 bars of battery usage. (I do usually top it up between uses though, just because.)
Still very happy with this! (Although I did notice that it went on sale on Prime day for a lot less than I paid for it.)
I'm leaving my review at 5 stars. I still recommend this unit!
Original Review - April 22 2017.
I'm ecstatic to own this baby!
Words cannot express how sick and tired I am of the two-stroke engine on my current Stihl trimmer. I'm tired of mixing gas & oil, and storing it, and draining it. And fiddling with the dang thing to get it going. And the blue smoke and the smell. Some people have a knack for small equipment. I am not one of those people. (Every year I have to hand the thing off to my brother or somebody with substantially more patience than me to tweak the thing to get it running.) Last summer I barely did any trimming just because I didn't want to deal with the frustration.
And so enter my new DeWalt 20V String Trimmer. LOVE IT!
I already own a 20V DeWalt drill & screw gun set which I also LOVE!
And so I was keen on getting another DeWalt tool that shared the same charger & battery. (And the battery on this baby is huge and powerful.)
I'm a 5'7" woman and this unit is easy enough for me to handle. (No problems at all to trim my fairly small property.) It's nicely balanced when I carry it around by the handle.
And it's powerful. And I love that it shuts off and doesn't putter while it's idling.
Assembly was no problem. Just have to join the top & bottom poles together and tighten some screws and screw the handle on. Charge the battery and you're ready to go.
And so now my Stihl gas powered trimmer is going to be listed on kijiji and I'll take the $75 to help pay for this new DeWalt cordless unit.
These Lithium Ion batteries are finally strong enough to compete with gas powered equipment. For real.
Next on the list is ditching my 25 year old John Deere gas mower for a cordless mower. If only DeWalt made one of those as well...
If you found this review helpful at all, I'd appreciate it if you clicked the "Yes" button. :-)
