Great fun.
I'm not going to dive too far into the plot, which is fine -- good even -- but with this genre to me it's more about how well the superhero-type premise works. Venom is decidedly different from the patented Marvel films. The characters are not as black and white (save for the villain, a capitalist entrepreneur type who is actually pretty evil) and the "super" conceit is not as slick. Venom is darker and dirtier, with a protagonist who isn't a painful jerk like Eddie Brock in the Spider-Man film, but isn't necessarily a glossy Marvel hero-type either.
Tom Hardy's performance carries the film. The premise here is different from the outset -- Venom is a space-born alien parasite, not a lab accident or a magic ring. He's not nice. Not evil, necessarily, but definitely not a magical force for good. Hardy's Eddie Brock would like to be a force for good, but he's a bit of a mess as a struggling reporter who gets fired for being too aggressive with a self-aggrandizing scientist in an interview and manages to lose his girlfriend in the process.
The fun of the movie is seeing what happens when Venom and Brock get together. Hardy acts the Venom voice he hears in his head as well, and it's that terrific, gonzo performance that propels the movie. It would not have worked with anything less.
The effects and production values here are fine -- for the most part as high as people have come to expect. The biggest Marvel Movies have more whiz-bang in the CGI department, but lack the interesting off-center characterizations here. IS Venom evil? Is Eddie good? If neither of these things are clear, can the combination of the two of them nevertheless be worthwhile?
Don't get me wrong -- this film isn't a deep, probing Oscar-bait drama. It simply isn't the genre for that. But it's fascinating to watch Hardy navigate his dual role and make something happen here. The sensibilities in play are more textured than the usual comic-book-based morality play, and it manages to feel both spookier and more grounded than the shiny superhero sky-battle stuff (okay there might be one sky battle).
Four stars for a different, and arguably better take on the superhero movie. I'm looking forward to the sequel and hope it holds on to the quirky, gritty flavor that make Venom a lot more fun than many reviews would have you believe. Check it out.

On the one hand, they effectively salvaged what they could of the comic's canon; which wasn't much, but is sufficient to call this a "nice" modernization. They also did the internal voice of Venom pretty well thanks to a very fine job on sound mixing. As for the visual style, not all the CGI shots will age well, but it was certainly a thousand times better than Aquaman. Mainly, you still can recognize the "Todd MacFarlane" touch in the design and the special effects team certainly did a good job to interpret how such an incredible thing should move. (So no physics headaches like in the last Wolverine Origin. Praise Knull!) For all this, at least, that movie was enjoyable. I'm even leaving an extra star for making that thing without denaturing it's source material... which is something too often done lately. Especially when heavy re-imagining occurs, which is obviously the case here.
Humour... was good. And I'm not easy on my comedic approach.
So if you want an easy mark soft super hero movie that will entertain and make you laugh, this is probably for you.
Now, on the other hand... The feeling of intense "meh" I had at the end of this movie can only be compared to the 5th bayformers. Meaning; while it obviously is near enough canon to avoid utter rejection by this internal fan of yours, and while it is certainly beautiful enough to be watched more than once... the movie glides so much on its material that it becomes hard to get attached to anything.
You will need to put you "Venom fan hat" on, in order to be pressed to care.
And it isn't the fault of the actors... Tom Hardy & co does their best to convey what is, in essence, a scenario on par with John Wick's in term of complexity - minus the amazing choreography. Maybe they weren't helped in that department by "choosing" to get Peter Parker out of the picture entirely (the lacking spider on Venom's appearance makes him look silly-er); but that is still no excuse for one peculiar scene when characters should be devastatingly in shock, about what just happened, and yet brush it off as if it were only that grievous time when "that particular family member" got too drunk and undressed publicly at thanksgiving.
Maybe it was the lack of explanations for why their clothes are unaffected by the Klyntar (which apparently can traverse any textile without it itself being faking it). Maybe, the lack of reaction of any character contemplating the hideous critter... except Eddie Brock himself! Maybe it was the choice to not show a flashback of Venom, on his home world, when he introduces the threat that his specie represent.
Maybe it was all that casual killing spree, where no ones cares about the victims... except that poor Isaac. And by casual, I mean by taking extreme pains to show no suffering on the screen whatsoever. (Still except that poor Isaac, and Mary?) Or by defining the only motivation of Venom by "FOOD" - which is a tad bit minimalist in my taste.
Then again... No Spidey, no Carnage (yet); what was I expecting?
As I said, it's hard to pinpoint the exact origin of this "Meh" feeling.
Overall : this is certainly a nice addition to any Venom collectors out there.
Or for the super hero film junkies who never can get enough. (I have such a friend, hence the buy : a nice gift indeed.)
And the more I think about it, the more I have to admit that... I enjoyed it.
The beat is unrelenting, the action is well paced and beautiful, the jokes are good, the design are as good as one could have hoped.
Just don't expect anything else from it, and certainly not the level of drama usually implied by the spider-verse. Or the level of "Emo-Goth-Dark" you would usually want from anything related to the McFarlane name.
In a nutshell, this movie was made to requirements.
It does its job, maybe not perfectly, but certainly up to the challenge.
Now let's all wait for the sequel... which promises to be way better!
A lot like Cameron's Alita, now that I think of it.
