This book reminds me a little bit of those Goosebumps books I used to read as a kid where you could choose your own ending.
I loved those books!
This book also has where you choose your own ending.
I used to read the book one way then go back and re-read the book with another ending.
Looking back at it now, how genius!
Comparing how different decisions result in different outcomes is a good lesson for kids to learn.
This book is appropriate for my niece
that is 10.
I don’t like that the text is so small, but there is a lot packed into all the pages.
I love these kinds of books that are also a game. They're interactive, entertaining and can just be lots of fun! My husband introduced me to some of these types of books and games after we were married and now they are some of my favorite things to play and read sometimes.
If you like comic books, the Knights Club, Choose your own adventure types of stories, tabletop games, etc. then this is a book you'll want to check out that you can enjoy!
Perfectly giftable.
1. The biggest one is panel 24, which has a puzzle asking you to multiply 22 by three. The symbol signalling the solution is nowhere to be found in the entire book. After some serious digging, I believe the problem is that it should be *divide* by three, and the correct panel to jump to is panel 7. (Ignore the remainder, I guess?) The omission of the symbol is the real killer here.
2. Also, the archer's stats are wrong, having been copied from Karinka. It should be agility 13, strength 8, intelligence 10, not all 10s.
3. XP and SP are mixed up a couple times at various points. You can usually figure this out from context.
You can download extra "Quest Tracker" pages so you don't have to mar up the book or break the spine to photocopy it. It's not exactly hard to make your own notes on a piece of paper using actual numbers instead of little squares to keep track. Clearly aimed at the younger set, it still entertains most adults I've shown it too. Since there are four character choices, you can "play" the book again as someone else. It's a bit of a Novelty act, but not a bad one.
The last thing I give a lot of credit to this book for creating, is that it can allow a young mind struggling with math a chance to work out some critical core function thinking without getting them to be aware they are doing math. Much like Monopoly can take a lot of credit over a few generations of teaching kids to count while also secretly making them divide, multiply, and even factor a little bit, this kind of material might nudge a reluctant learner at core math skills into a successful one.
