The setup routine allowed me to transfer over my accounts and settings from the Pure. That saved a lot of time, but only the Google accounts transferred. Wasn't a big deal to reenter the rest.
The bigger OLED screen is excellent! I've grown attached to the Motorola gesture and screen enhancements, and the Z3 Play comes through there. In addition, Motorola included the navigation bar from the upcoming Android P OS. The bar gives you a bit more real estate and I've come to like it a lot.
The fingerprint sensor is super! I programmed 4 fingers so that I can unlock the phone or other apps when I hold the phone either hand. Very slick implementation.
The battery life is incredible. That included battery pack module is a great addition, but as has already been said, there apparently isn't a case that fits over it, though. Even so, the Z3 Play doesn't seem like it needs the extra juice often. Maybe when traveling. The QC 3.0 charges the phone incredibly fast.
Only two down sides so far, only one of which concerns the phone itself. First, I had to get a bunch of cables and charging accessories because of the USB-C connector. I got some microUSB to C adapters for a few items that I have, but mostly switched over to stuff that supports QC 3.0, plus I ordered a data cable for USB 3.1 support. Strangely, although the Z3 Play supposedly supports USB 3.1 with the higher data transfer rates, it doesn't come with a USB 3.1 cable. According to Motorola, the charging cable only supports USB 2.0. Hmmm.
Overall, the phone's performance is snappy, the battery life is outstanding, and the OLED screen is great. Motorola produced another winner at a reasonable price. The Prime special sealed the deal. I am a very happy camper. FWIW, I also took advantage of the speaker module special, but that hasn't shipped yet.
What do I like? Plenty! Battery life is astounding, even just using the phone's internal battery. (The phone comes with an external battery pack in the form of a Moto Mod. With that attached, the phone easily can last all weekend without a recharge.) Charging is stupendously fast, whether with the included TurboPower wall charger or the (purchased separately) TurboPower car charger.
The screen is lower-res than the S7, but I have seldom noticed the difference. Cameras seem decent to me, although some folks don't like them. Bluetooth range and performance is definitely better than the S7. There are preinstalled Amazon apps, but they are useful and relatively unobtrusive. Phone is generally fast and responsive.
This phone was offered with a promotion when I purchased it: the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa. I'm still waiting on Amazon to ship that, as they probably sold out quickly on Prime Day.
Some problems I've had:
* Face unlock won't work. This isn't a big deal to me, but my beard is apparently too bushy and long for the software to detect the boundaries of my face.
* I have never been able to get NFC to work. This isn't a big deal to me either, as I seldom use NFC (mostly for convenient Bluetooth pairing). The NFC antenna is apparently in the top part of the phone, and you need to use the front of the phone because Moto Mods can block access to the back part of the phone.
* Initially, I could create and use contacts stored in my nano SIM, but a few days ago that stopped working -- SIM contacts stopped showing up in the Contacts app, and my SMS history with one such contact was completely erased.. I was able to use a 3rd party Android tool to copy the SIM contacts to Google Contacts. (The phone's internal phonebook likewise seems to have become inaccessible, but I wasn't using that.)
* When pairing with high-end Bluetooth headphones that support aptX HD, the Moto Z3 Play defaults to a 44.1 kHz sampling rate instead of a 48 kHz sampling rate. This is a bit disappointing. Even after enabling developer mode, I cannot change the sampling rate. The phone claims it is sending 24-bit audio, at least.
None of these issues are deal killers, and in fact, the Moto Z3 Play has become my main phone, rather than the backup phone I had intended it to be.
Pros:
Awesome battery life. I find that I can take my phone off the charger at about 7am and with medium usage it'll last till about 7pm or so before hitting 30-40%. I have yet to use the included Moto mod because I honestly don't need it. It may be good if you were going to be away from a charger for a long period of time.
Good screen size. I like the fact that the screen is bigger and it doesn't seem to be a finger print magnet like the original play.
Camera quality is definitely an upgrade from the first and my pictures have a lot more detail.
Speed. It may not have the fastest processor on the market but the phone itself is pretty responsive.
Price. For a brand new phone with a lot of modern bells and whistles it's a great price. I'd honestly get this any day over a 1000$ samnsung or iPhone.
Storage. 64gb is a perfect amount of storage and I love that it's expandable.
Cons:
Occasionally it freezes up but it's easy to restart. I've only had it happen twice but it's not that annoying since the phone boots up quickly.
The finger print scanner takes a little while to get used to since it's on the side but it's pretty accurate.
The facial recognition lock is pretty worthless.
One thing that got me is no dedicated headphone jack but that seems to almost be a normal feature now (thanks apple).
I honestly recommend it and if youre looking to upgrade your phone and don't want to pay 800+ for a new phone. It may not have the best of the best processor or camera but it manages quite well with the top contenders. So far I'm very satisfied.
